The owners- an attorney and a pediatrician - have lived in this home over 30 years. Much of the time was spent parenting their four sons. In the '80's the family restored the home from a shingled exterior to its former glory, doing much of the work with their own hands.
Jan continures in medical practice, but has become a water-color artist and you will see some of her work displayed in the flat. Emerson continues to teach Law Bar Review courses and enjoy his talent on guitar.
The family has traveled much of the world together - visiting over 40 countries.
Marilyn Blaustein Eldin Tobias purchased this apartment in 1979
The flat is in a Victorian house in Alamo Square. It is spacious and confortable and can easily accommodate a family of 6. Since it is centrally located near all transportations it's a great place to explore San francisco.
We had a bit of trouble getting into our apt, since the dropbox keys did not work in the back gate. We initially had some trouble with the front door but with some wiggling, we were successful. Marilyn told me that the keys were in fact new, since the last renters had lost both. After the first entry we just used the keypad lock on the front door rather than the deadbolt.
The apt is great. It is quite spacious with charming 1800s decor. The beds were very comfortable and the bedrooms were large. Even the twin bed is charming. There were no dressers, so we just lived out of our luggage, propped on chairs. No problem. The kitchen, also very large and comfortable had fairly dated cabinets and sink but the appliances were fairly new. It was well stocked with appliances, utensils, dishes, pots and pans. We made a full Christmas dinner for seven people and we were not bumping into each other. There was a table for 4 in the kitchen and another in the living room. I love the table in the corner turret window. We can see the edge of Alamo Square Park from this window. Two large TVs are located in the living room and master bedroom. The heat works fine and there are additional portable heaters for each room, but we only used the one in the master bedroom. The furniture is comfortable and in good repair. The single bathroom is clean, fairly modern and well stocked with thick fluffy towels. There is plenty of hot water for showers--we took 3 in a row with no problems. The WiFi was easy to access but not very strong (1 bar).
The location was perfect for us, very close to our daughter's apartment, with a Safeway, CVS and good transportation within several blocks. Since the house is at the top of a small hill, every direction is down. A bottle of wine was waiting for us. Nice touch.
I was a bit dismayed at the lack of local information (bus routes, post box location, food and drug store locations, restaurant recommendations, tour guide books, etc). We have a rental vacation house ourselves and provide our renters with a 3-ring binder with this info. It took a fair amount of searching to find what little there was (just a TV channel list)
The traffic noise is significant. My daughters who live in NYC and DC were not bothered at all but those of us from more peaceful abodes found it initially difficult to sleep. I later bought some disposable earplugs at the drug store and problem solved.
Marilyn was great.
I will definitely return.
Charming, immaculately clean, & wonderful location. Everyone slept well on the firm, comfortable mattresses. Expect street noise. The living room is naturally bright with sunlight; beautiful windows. The kitchen is well-stocked, perfect for any entertaining. Walking distance to many fine restaurants, bakeries, etc.
Five of us stayed in the flat and it was super comfortable. Plenty of room for all of us. The location was great!! We walked all over the city from there! We had a great stay and would definitely return.
The house is in the middle of the city, so everything is close by, or at least a Lyft away. Haight-Asbury is walkable (although seamy), everything else is steep and farther away. You don't want a car if you can avoid it; parking was difficult. The apartment was comfortable, but the weather was still warm. The layout is good, with bedrooms on one end, and the kitchen is well-equipped, although we only used it for breakfasts. The building is noisy, and the hall and outside door is close to the main bedroom.
This is a very cute place with a great location. I'd recommend it other than a few things. The cleanliness part lacks. The comforter on our bed was soiled with something very nasty (I won't elaborate for those with weak tummies) and I had to remove it the first day. It simply had not been washed. Had it been washed the soil would not have been there. Also, the was a blood stain on our bed sheets. They had been washed, but still, any sort of stain in gross and unacceptable. I dealt with it but was grossed out every time I got into bed.
There was airplane luggage tags under one of the beds that ended up finding it's way out from under the bed. There were dishes that were put away but still dirty. When you pay the fees and prices we did for a place like this, we expect it to be CLEAN. Dishes, bedding, floors, everything.
Other than that, this place is lovely. It is comfortable, cute, and a great location.
There were 5 of us that stayed there; 4 adults and a child. We did end up running out of tp and I asked Marilyn about it and her response was not accommodating, but other than that, she was easy and pleasant to deal with. She communicates quickly and well.
If these few things were improved, this would be a 5 star place. It's the next block up from the Painted Ladies and within walking distance of many delicious restaurants. We rented a car and parking was not easy, but it was do-able.
The unit is less than a block from Alamo Square Park and the Painted Ladies. The 2 story red Hop on, Hop off bus as well as 4 central bus lines are less than a block away.
You are truly staying in the city center here, with both the Civic Center and Golden Gate Park - along with many good restaurants) within walking distance. (5- 30 minutes for most people)
