About Mary Garner

Hosts Mary and Murray Garner. Murray manages the apple orchard, our apple variety Aztec and our small Highland cattle herd. Aztec is a highly coloured sub variety of Fuji which Murray discovered on the orchard. The variety has proved very popular in America and Europe with trees sold in several different countries. Murray has a boat and enjoys fishing and the occasional tandem sky dive. Mary works as a volunteer manager in Nelson and enjoys cooking, home preserving and gardening..

Why Mary Garner chose Mount Richmond Forest Park

This orchard property has been in Mary's family since 1910.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Quiet and peaceful, stunning views across Tasman Bay, the orchard dam (similar to a small lake) is home to native ducks and other bird life. Kereru House is surrounded by a beautiful garden with native birds including the Kereru (NZ native wood pigeon). Cute Highland cattle love eating apples and oranges from the orchard.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The property was as we had expected in a secluded location with views from several balconies out to sea. The house is well maintained and very clean, the added bonus being the weekly service which includes cleaning and change of linen. There is a good selection of cooking utensils and crockery though a hand mixer may be useful for longer stays if guests do much cooking. The garden is also well maintained and a vegetable patch offered fresh produce. The hosts are extremely welcoming providing a wealth of local information, fresh flowers on arrival not forgetting home baking, and some welcome basics in the fridge. A thoroughly relaxing venue but close to the Abel Tasman Park and shopping facilities as required. For those seeking a base to enjoy just living in New Zealand this is an ideal choice. Five stars awarded by this guest.

My Response

Thank you very much for this review. We are constantly seeking to improve the stay for our guests, so I shall be purchasing a hand mixer for the kitchen. It was a good suggestion and as a cook myself, I should have thought of it - thank you! We look forward to sharing our property with many more guests and are always motivated to offer a discount for longer or off season bookings. Mary

Peak experience in many ways

  • 5 of 5

The house is roomy, very clean and comfortable. Kitchen is very well equipped. Mary was most gracious as a host and navigator to local restaurants and sights. Used veggies from the garden for dinner, sitting out on the back deck while a couple of fantails kept us company. One evening, sitting on the upper "breakfast room" deck and enjoying the bay view, we were greeted by a Lady Amherst pheasant prancing just before us. Plums and clementines from the orchard, a comfortable, quiet bed. Very private and relaxing, but convenient to Mapua and some very good restaurants.

Owner's Response: We are always delighted to share our property with our guests and are pleased when people enjoy their stay enough to want to take the trouble to give us a review. We wish to note that the property is not suitable for families with young children because of the proximity of the cliff (as noted in the previous review but possibly as part of a system generated options list).

Amazing Relaxing Stay

  • 5 of 5

The Clifftop Orchard is just as described and as good as the reviews reveal. The house is very clean and has everything you could possible need for cooking and having a relaxing stay. Its central to all that the Nelson Area has to offer and Mary and Murray are very helpful in acclimating you to all the sights and activities around. The orchard and cows were a big bonus and that view was unbelievable. Beautiful gardens and lovely little places to sit and enjoy the quiet. Wish we could have stayed longer.

Owner's Response: We are always delighted when our guests take the trouble to write a review and that they have enjoyed their stay. We do want to note however, that we cannot unfortunately accept families with young children (see this guest's recommendation from the site checklist). We feel the proximity of our clifftop does not make the property safe for little children.

Hideaway on the Cliffs of Motueka

  • 5 of 5

My family and I were looking for something close to the Cliffs, and the Keruru House was the perfect place for our family of 4. We rented based on the previous reviews, and they did not disappoint. From the amenities, to the hospitality, Murray and Mary really treated us like family. I had never driven on the left hand side of the road, so Mary met us at Nelson Airport and we followed her back to the house. I can't say enough about our experience! Thanks to the Garners, our spring break was fantastic!

Truly a home away from (your) home

  • 5 of 5

How fortunate we were to book Kereru House for our February 2016 vacation in New Zealand! Our decision to rent this property was based on the website information and we were elated when we arrived and were greeted with everything shown on the website, and more.

Our hosts, Mary and Murray Garner, are wonderful. Mary met us at the Airport in Nelson and this made the trip to Kereru House hassle-free. Because of the special efforts our hosts make to take care of their guests, we even had basics like bread, milk, and eggs provided for our use for the first day or so. What a special treat this is when one travels over 30 hours to reach New Zealand from Canada. Fresh flowers and home baking provided by Mary on a weekly basis made us feel truly welcome and at home.

The views from the windows and balconies are stunning and we'll always remember opening the front door everyday and seeing the beautiful turquoise Tasman Bay in front of us. The home is very pleasant to live in, beautifully decorated and restful. The upstairs bedroom has lots of space and a most comfortable bed. The gardens are an added bonus as are the fruit trees. (We shared some of the apples from the orchard with the resident friendly cows.)

This part of New Zealand is great to explore: Nelson offers a more urban atmosphere; Motueka is close by and an easy place to go to for groceries and the Sunday Market in Motueka is fun; Mapua is even closer to Kereru House where one can enjoy icecream, or a glass of wine or beer, or fish and chips from The Smokehouse, or a meal at the restaurants on the wharf.

And Abel Tasman National Park with all the activities it has to offer is only a short distance from Kereru House. We particularly enjoyed the vineyards, small cafes, and pubs tucked away along Moutere Highway, again, only a short distance from Kereru House.

If my husband and I are fortunate enough to travel to New Zealand again, we know where we will plan to stay!

Owner's Response: Thank you Anne Marie and Ken for taking such time over your view. It was our absolute pleasure to have you stay at Kereru House. We really enjoy getting to know our guests who stay for more than a few days.
