My introduction to San Francisco was in the sixties when I worked on a surgery ward at UCSF. My free time was spent hanging out in North Beach and favorite places: City Lights Bookstore, Vesuvio’s Café, Enricos’ and Café Trieste. After sojourns on the Monterey Peninsula, Washington, D.C. Vietnam and North Carolina, I returned to San Francisco to work as a professor in the UCSF School of Nursing.
Haight Ashbury was the neighborhood where I wanted to live. I fell in love with 740 Shrader Street, a house built in 1897 by a well-known artist of the day, Nellie Burrell Scott who was married to Wisner Gillette Scott , an engineer with investment in the mining industry. He was also a very civic-minded gentleman who gave the opening address to the West Coast Defense League meeting in Seattle in 1916.
740 Shrader has been a work in progress all these years, and I take great pride in the high quality of maintenance and improvements.
Music has been a passion throughout my life, and opera is my favorite musical form. I especially enjoy chamber and classical, music as well as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie and Joni Mitchell.
Collecting books is another passion; my library includes an extensive collection of books about military history, war and peace. This particular interest derives from an 18 month period in 1967-68 when I worked for the Agency of International Development as a nurse adviser in South Vietnam.
Other interests include politics and art. My travels have taken me to Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, Central America, and Mexico.
I was a board member of Haight Ashbury Improvement Association for a number of years.
What a sweetheart! Harry is a friendly Shih Tzu and resident of 740 Shrader. We celebrated his 2nd birthday in May with friends, neighbors and his favorite four-legged playmates.
The Owner purchased this apartment in 1977
I love living in a metropolitan city with access to the arts: music, theater, dance and museums.
My abode is on the top floor of 740 Shrader Street; the lower two floors, known as A Flat and B Flat, are vacation rentals. The house was designed by the artist Nellie Burrell Scott in 1897. The top flat where I live was her art studio and place where she could hold informal art receptions. B Flat was their living quarters, and A Flat was, perhaps, servant's quarters and later, a rental. I have a considerable collection of their letters and memorabilia that will eventually be a part of the California Historical Society collections.
Most everything I want or need is found within two to four blocks.: an espresso place, pharmacy, excellent cafes and restaurants, hardware store, pet store, gym and neighborhood bar. The best independent bookstore is only a few blocks away as is a Whole Foods store. And Golden Gate Park! I've spent endless hours jogging, cycling walking and rollerskating there.
I can drive or take public transportation direct to the Civic Center, Union Square and the Embarcadero for shopping or performances. 740 Shrader's location is central and most places in the city are accessible in 20 minutes.
I stayed in the "Victorian Flat"in Haight Ashbury with my son and a friend from Canada last month. We felt "at home" as soon as we arrived and it stayed that way the whole time. Joan was very welcoming, with beautiful flowers from the garden and other nice touches - better than home actually!! Bogey the dear little dog was always there to welcome us, an old soul, he made us feel like family. The flat is lovely, peace and quiet which were my number one requirements and high speed internet (my son's number one requirement) were exactly as hoped. The flat is superbly located for travellers without a car, MUNI light rail direct to the city within 2 blocks and MUNI bus about the same, SO easy to get everywhere we wanted to go. And if we wanted a quiet day, Golden Gate Park is also within 2 blocks, with great museums and gardens - the Wednesday night food market at the park and a surprise visit by the food trucks on the Thursday night (also at the park) were foodie bonuses. Joan's collection of books is the best I have ever seen in a private home, if it rained I could have stayed home all day and read to my heart's content. Thank you so much Joan and Bogey for your hospitality, we hope to return and will certainly recommend you to others.
The flat was by far the best VRBO we have ever stayed. The rooms were well done and the kitchen right out of Architectural Digest. The kitchen offered everything we needed and then some. The bed was very comfortable being adorned with our towels artistically shaped as swans! The toilet paper was folded in a flower. I have never seen any of this in any of 5 star hotels we have stayed. The furniture was also very comfortable. The garden was private and charming. A nice respite from the city.
The location was perfect for us. Within a few blocks was Cole Valley with restaurants, shops, and market. The muni bus line was 2 blocks away making it easy and economical to get anywhere else in the city. Haight St, Whole Food Market, and many interesting shops were 3 blocks away. We always felt very safe. The flat was on a quiet tranquil street.
Joan the host was the very best. Gracious and accommodating. We couldn't have stayed at a better VRBO. Anyone would be fortunate to be a guest.
There cannot be a more gracious host than Joan. She was welcoming and mademsure wemhad everything we needed. A great neighborhood, easy to get around, lotsmof great shops, restaurants and a wine bar! The apartment was very well taken care of and had everything you could need.
Hope I have the opportunity to stay the next time I am in San Francisco.
We stayed for a week and absolutely loved the place..Joan was so warm and welcoming . There is NO need for a car easy to get around the city . The neighborhood was great tons of great restaurants so no need to travel into city for dinner. Haight Street market better than whole foods and cheaper. The apartment is well equipped only thing may use better pans but otherwise more than adequate. Will definitely stay again when in San Fran ..Thanks Joan
My husband, three teenage girls and I all enjoyed our 3 night stay in this flat. Joan was wonderful. She confirmed with me that everything was ok for arrival and was so helpful with recommendation on food store, restaurants and parking. This was our first time using VRBO and wanted to try out the experience of a comfortable home instead of a hotel room. I couldn't have asked for anything else. We all had our own rooms, great family room and dining room and kitchen. Laundry room was a plus too. We walked to Cole street for great Crepes on Cole and dinner at Zazie's French Bistro and awesome ice cream shop "The Ice Cream Bar" all in walking distance. We also enjoyed walking to GG Park and visiting the Academy of Arts and Science and Japanese Tea Garden. We used UBER to get us to the Warf and AT&T Park and it was only a 15 min ride for $20. I would defiantly recommend this flat for a family stay in SF, its in a great location and offers a very clean comfortable flat.
Our family of four, from Melbourne Australia, recently stayed in this delightful apartment located around the corner from Golden Gate Park. The property is very attractive and has all the amenities that are required for a comfortable stay. A Wholefoods supermarket is within walking distance and there are many lovely eating places to choose from in nearby streets. A tram stop is also located close by for a quick trip into downtown SF. Our family enjoyed bike riding around Golden Gate Park, and we were very excited to discover the walks through the Eucalyptus cloud forest on Mount Sutro. Our sons enjoyed shopping in Haight Street, and my husband and I enjoyed several visits to Zazie Bistro, recommended by our lovely host, Joan. We all felt right at home here and would have been very happy to stay longer!
My husband, mother-in-law, aged 87, and I all enjoyed our three night stay in this lovely well appointed flat. The beautiful, green trees outside the living room window reminded me of being in a treehouse. I also loved being in Sf without feeling the hustle bustle of City noise. It is close to Cole Valley cafes and GG Park and Muni. We took advantage of walking to the Japanese Tea Garden and busing out to the Palace of Legion of Honor for the magnificent Brooklyn Costume exhibit! We enjoyed drinking our coffee and snuggling up to the cozy fireplace while the fog burned off each morning. We loved the high ceilings and comfortable furnishings. The kitchen was great and I only wished we could have cooked a dinner there, too. But SF called us to try every cuisine we could cram into three days. Joan was great and welcoming, full of good advice as where to eat just around the corner.
