Once you step outside our red bamboo gates and onto the street you will love the convenience of being able to walk to shops, movies, restaurants, galleries and more. The Farmer's Market is one block away and each day there fresh tropical fruits and vegetables are for sale.
If your taste is for old homes and places with a sense of history then you will love our little rental. This accommodation is best described as '..An exotic Vacation Rental for the budget traveler.' Hilo is a safe neighborhood to walk at night and there are plenty of great little restaurants and music venues close by.
The Lotus is a refurbished traditional Hawaii-style 'Cane house’ built in the Plantation era. We painted it some bright colors and gave it a few upgrades to make your stay comfortable. The home features bamboo floors, an open plan kitchen and living area as well as charming features of an old home. The shower is down a private set of covered stairs and is decorated in 'Bali Style' with stone tiles, loads of plants and orchids, air and natural light.
Our close proximity to the bay means that the home is cooled by sea breezes. Ceiling fans in the living area and bedroom will ensure your comfort. In the master bedroom, the mattress is a pillow-top queen sized bed to ensure a great night's sleep. The other bedroom offers a queen sized bed and in the third bedroom there is a single bed. A fold out futon bed suitable for a child can be made available. Our couch also folds out to a full sized bed. Up to 6 people can be accommodated in 'The Lotus'
At one time this property was like many of the Sugar Cane 'camps' on this island with 6 houses houses on the property. We presently have two refurbished houses for guest accommodation. There are another two houses in the rear of the property not currently in use. The 'Sugar Shack' next door is another refurbished cane house that is also a vacation rental.
Our two vacation homes on the property can accommodate parties of up to 14 guests and so ours makes an ideal venue for a wedding, tour group, seminar or other small group event.
As your hosts, we have tried to think of your needs. Our goal is for our guests to relax and enjoy their visit to our island. Upon check in our guests find fresh flowers and fruit in our rental. Beach towels are provided.
This vacation spend less time in the car! Come and stay with us for a relaxed pace of life and an exotic tropical experience with plenty of beauty and good hospitality.

Megan and Jasper both love the colors of the tropics and splashed bright paint on old plantation buildings in this old garden. They have spent time restoring several old homes on the property so that visitors can enjoy an experience of an older Hawaii and the relaxed pace of life on Hawaii island.
Jasper is a retired contractor with a passion for his acousticTaylor guitar that he plays as often as he can. An avowed Aquarian, he's the co-visionary behind 'The Lotus Garden of Hilo.'
Megan is an expat Aussie and lives some of the time in Hilo and some of the time in Melbourne, Australia.
Megan Isaac purchased this cottage in 2000
An abundance of fresh produce and exotic fruits and flowers all year round and these can be found at the Farmer's Market, just a block away.
You will be in the geographic heart of Hilo Bay. There is great live entertainment to enjoy within a short stroll. Most nights you can hear live music from the lanai of our Lotus Cottage.
A favorite walk is a 15 to 20 minute stroll to Liliu'okalani Park. It's a beautiful vantage point to see Mauna Kea mountain and the twilight in this formal Japanese garden by the water is stunning.
-Our favorite place to swim is the nearby ‘Four Mile’ (officially known as Carlsmith Park) this is a beautiful lagoon with palm trees and a lush green lawn for picnics and sunbathing.
Want down time and a place to just chill while on vacation?
- Enjoy sitting on our small lanai for morning coffee or in the evenings..
- Property is walled on all sides creating a private oasis. Our lush garden setting with stone buddha statues, bamboo and several water features it is a great place to rest and recover.
-Enjoy many great eating out options within a block from here.
We had an amazing visit, thanks to Megan and Jasper. A little haven in downtown Hilo. Can't wait to return again soon!
the owners of this wonderful place housed our entire family of eleven & was so accommodating to making sure our family had EVERYTHING that was needed & went beyond themselves. TO have a place that was cozy, clean and homey is one thing, but to have such beautiful people to come back to the room to, were like family to us. Thank you kindly to Megan & Jasper. Better than hotel life!!
Was a wonderful place to stay. Reminded me of an oasis. There was a friendly cat that came to visit every morning and evening. Koi in the ponds and fountains. The Lotus Cottage is near the shops and market in downtown Hilo, excellent location for the shoppers in your group. Easy access out of Hilo to Volcano National Park, Kona, and the major highways. There are many places to visit within walking distance too, The Tsunami Museum, Coconut Island, restaurants, etc. The Cottage was comfortable and had all the amenities we were looking for and it comfortably fit our large group.
A tru taste of old Hilo. Quiet, comfortable, very down home. If you are a fine china and tablecloth person this is not for you. If you like to listen to the frogs while you take your shower you will be right at home. This place is a jewel and Megan is the perfect jeweler.
Beautiful rental with lots of character. Very well maintained. Basic odds and ends are in the kitchen (salt, pepper, oil, other various leftovers), so that is really handy. Funky atmosphere, if you are looking for a polished resort stay this is not it. Hosts are fantastic. Amazingly quiet for being in the middle of Hilo, walk to everything - legendary farmers market on Wednesday one short block away. Restaurant across the street has killer happy hour ($2 beer, $2 taco or nacho) and also does great dinner.
We stayed for three nights and loved the location and the inn keepers. The property was clean and well maintained and the owners did everything they could to make us comfortable. The listing was right on as to what we could expect. There was a great restaurant across the street. We ate there three times! The farmers market was half a block away.
Hilo is a town built in the heyday of the Sugar Cane era. Many grand old buildings of the 20's and 40's still stand. Our downtown location offers many attractions ust a short walk away. See a show at The Palace Theater or enjoy restaurants and cafes to suit every budget. Browse the many galleries and craft stores and visit the Tsunami Museum and the Lyman Museum for insights into the island's fascinating history of Hawaiian Kingdoms, christian missionaries & the powerful forces of nature that have shaped the island.
Hilo is a great place for the gourmet cook to visit. Enjoy cooking with fresh produce of the tropics. Our ' Lotus' vacation rental is a pleasant 20 minute stroll from Suisan Fish market. You will be just a block from the Hilo Farmer's market which operates daily all year round. Here farmers, flower merchants and artisans sell their wares and you can sample exotic fruits & local cuisines. We also have some wonderful beaches 10 minutes drive away. A snorkeler's delight and a place to see the sea turtles grazing on rocks there
