Why Sonja Rose Klein chose Barksdale

What makes this Lodge unique
Ambush Hill Ranch is unique, beautiful and remote. The quiet at times can be unsettling. The unspoiled nature of the ranch is left to Mother Nature who cannot be bested. If you desire, peace, solitude and natural beauty unblemished by human desire, Ambush Hill is for you.

A great time was had!!!
Property was beautiful, we really enjoyed our stay. The only complaint is that the drive to concan was a little far.
Beautiful and quiet place Hill Country
The house exceeded our expectations on cleanliness and accommodations. Plenty of room to wander and enjoy nature. The swimming hole was awesome and the grounds were very well maintained. Would definitely stay here again if we make another visit to Hill Country. Note, if you're riding bikes, there are good paved roads all the way to the gate. The house sits back off the road a little ways across a creek, but there is good parking up by the gate.
Beautiful piece of property. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The lodge was very roomy and comfortable. We couldn't get enough of the natural surroundings, especially the spring fed creek. Sonja was very helpful and kind.
What a beautiful place?! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! We will definitely be back!
Great spot in the Hill Country
My family (wife and I plus our two 13-year-olds and a friend of theirs) were looking for a quick long-weekend getaway from Austin this summer. The solitude and the swimming hole drew us in, and did not disappoint. It was about a 4-hour drive from Austin including bathroom breaks.
We arrived and met the owner on the driveway up to the house. She was very pleasant and gave us some quick instructions regarding our stay. She's got a beautiful spread that is exemplary of all the Hill Country has to offer. The house was well-equipped and nicely maintained. The gas stove/oven in the kitchen was an unexpected but very welcome sight.
The night sky out here is simply amazing, even the teens were impressed. Shooting stars, planets, the Milky Way; it was truly breathtaking, and something us city folks tend to forget the magnitude of.
The swimming hole on spring-fed Bullhead Creek was fantastic; there is good shade and a picnic table for those who don't want to get in the water. The water itself was glorious; not too cold and not too warm, and clear as could be. There is an old jeep trail that offers a great overview of the ranch and it's beauty. We visited the Devil's Sinkhole for an evening bat emergence; it was about an hour drive to Rocksprings to meet with the guide and then 10-minute drive out to the sinkhole.
I definitely recommend anyone looking for a true Hill Country getaway consider staying here. The owner is a gem (take a read of the books she's written which are available at the house), and the price is reasonable for the level of amenities.
Secluded and Fun
This place is incredible. We had 8 guys on Motorcycles. You are surrounded by pure beauty. The swimming hole was clear, cold and refreshing after a good days ride. Highly suggest!
Ambush Hill is remote, scenic, private and very quiet. The nearest village of 80 is 16 miles and the next town 20 miles from the ranch, the town of Camp Wood, Texas. There is a convenience store, a family dollar store and some restaurants serving Mexican food and excellent barbecue. Beer and wine are available in the town but a liquor store is in Uvalde 60 miles away. Also in Uvalde is a large
grocery store and Walmart as well as restaurants, a hospital and
other services. This ranch is only 20 miles from Camp Wood where kayaks, floats and other water recreational toys are available to use on the Nueces River, larger than the Frio and much less crowded.
