About Clare Mahon

I have been living in Lucca for almost thirty years now and have brought my family up here. It is a wonderful place to visit and continues to amaze me!

Why Clare Mahon chose Lucca Province

Lucca is close to everything in Tuscany, but is a bit of an undiscovered gem. A stay here is a look at what life in Italy is all about.

What makes this apartment unique

The palazzo is fully restored for efficient modern living in ancient splendor. The town's daily life is just a step away. The garage is a wonderful luxury and takes the guess work out of parking!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Review #6257814 Owner provides a wonderful apartment rental experience

We rented the Libertas apartment for 6 weeks and certainly echo all of the positive commentary left by others. We have rented several apartments in various Italian cities and found Lucca offered more of what we were seeking in a long term rental. What makes this apartment so special? 1) The furnishings and attention to the details (by owner Clare Mahon) of what an apartment needs to make you comfortable. Weekly cleaning service and prompt attention to any maintenance needs are a reflection on how much Clare cares about her guests. Fresh herbs, flowers and first provisions of cheese and salami were waiting for us upon arrival. 2) The quiet location of the apartment near the Botanical Garden and quick access to the Lucca Wall for daily walking 3) The kitchen is very well-equipped making it easy to prepare meals with fresh, local ingredients. The twice a week market is located nearby and local gastronomias and artisan bakeries are within a short walking distance 4) The apartment is very spacious and well lit from the many large windows looking out on the courtyard 5) The town of Lucca has a great balance between tourists and local residents (unlike other Tuscan cities) We enjoyed our stay so much we are returning to Libertas for a month next year. Thank you Clare for providing such a beautiful space.

One of my best memories of Italy

  • 5 of 5

When images of our 3 week trip to Italy pops into my head, it is this living/dining area that I see. Strange, since we saw such spectular sites and had great adventures, but the brightness and spaciousness of this apartment is my first memory. As 2 couples, 70+, we had already done apartments in Rome and Florence with great success, but Clare provides a comfortable setting and every amenity. It is quiet and well located, but no elevator, so be prepared to go up two flights of stairs, plus another if you use the garage.

Clare was a terrific host and even joined us for a glass of wine one night at a local cafe -- such fun !!

As noted before, a great cafe is a half block away and we used it every morning; plus all of the walled city is steps away.

We had a car, so the garage was a bonus, but you don't need it to see Lucca.

We did drive to Pisa, and stopped for lunch at Il Porto in Varrezio on the Mediterranean. Do it if you can.

We had planned to take the train to Cinque Terre, but it appeared to complicated, even for us seasonend travelers, so we drove to Levanto and took the train from there. Cinque Terre was hot and crowded, and my recommendation at this point is that you can skip it and not miss a thing. It is especially not workable for anyone with a handicap since it is literally hillside and all steps. Stay and enjoy Lucca. We found after tourist clogged Rome and Florence, we loved Lucca, and if we went back to Italy, we would skip the first two cities and head for the smaller towns like Lucca.

Two things to note in this apartment; first the master bath, which is roomy and bright, has a tub with a shower head, not a shower stall. The second bathroom is much smaller and has a shower stall. Do remember that Europeans do not provide washcloths, so bring your own. Second, Clare recommended that we only use the washer/dryer combo on the first floor to wash, and not dry. Since she lives in the apartment in the winter, she knows from experience. We chose to skip laundry and wait until we got to Bellagio.

If I went back to Lucca, Clare would be my first call, you can't beat this apartment.

Small things make a big difference!

  • 5 of 5

I recently stayed at Libertas with my husband and we found it- excellent! Often rental places are furnished with rag-tag leftovers. This place was gorgeous, spotless and very tastefully furnished with purpose-bought pieces and real art. Even the knives and pots and pans were top quality. The internet connection is fibre optic and very fast and reliable so getting some work done was easy. There is also a brand new smart TV so we could even watch our our Apple TV from abroad. Not to mention what a convenience the garage was. Libertas might look more expensive than other places, but you get what you pay for. This place is well worth it!

Wonderful Lucca

  • 5 of 5

Our 2+ week stay in Lucca was absolutely wonderful. The apartment was beautiful, clean and had all the comforts of home. The location was quiet yet close to everything with Luccas best bakery right around the corner. Clare went way beyond the usual as a host. She met us at the train station, spent time showing us around the apartment, gave us many tips on where to go, where to eat, and where to shop. She even picked us up when we left and explained to the bus driver where we should be left off. Just a super guide. We hope to return to Lucca and we will certainly stay in Libertas when we do.

The best lifestyle

  • 5 of 5

Clare's apartment was beautifully appointed. The historic building was ideally situated. The city of Lucca was extraordinarily civilized. The food of Lucca will mark a highpoint in your dining experiences. There is much to see and do and you will be drawn out to be a part of the city's life. Clare was the perfect host and did everything to make our stay enjoyable. We intend to return.

I want to move to Lucca!

  • 5 of 5

This apartment was perfect. Filled with great style and art yet perfectly comfortable. Kitchen just fine for cooking a meal or two but you are in Lucca so the draw from the city pulls you to any of their many great places to eat. The linens and beds are comfortable but what I loved best were the windows streaming light and the interior courtyard to look down on. There were bikes which we used to ride the wall and Clare was a great help and, being Americanand living there, she offers easy travel and great tips. I want to return and stay longer. I loved this apartment and the city it's in.

Perfect Place

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful stay at Clare's apartment. The description is absolutely accurate - in fact it may even be nicer than the description. We loved the art work, the furnishings, the spacious bedrooms and even the towels were incredible. There was wi fi and even a phone we could use. The bedrooms face a beautiful inner courtyard so it is blissfully quiet. Clare was perhaps the most helful VRBO host we have ever encountered. She could not have been more helpful. I would also add that unlike most kitchens which tend to have the basics you could cook a full meal here just as if you were at home. We had dinners out - too many restaurants to choose from but fortunately you can walk the wall around Lucca to wear off a few calories. What is so nice about Lucca is that it is still a living city with Italians and a few tourists - you can actually feel as if you have experienced a little of Italian life. we hope we can return one day.
