Overview

About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, Great Kitchen, Patio Fire Pit

Dog-friendly Alpine Fish and Ski Haus in Dunsmuir is a great place for families to meet up from the north and south. This comfortable and super-clean place has attractive and unique furnishings, four separate sleeping areas and two baths.

PLEASE NOTE: We set a maximum of 6 guests but will consider 8 (additional fee required), ONLY if guests have stayed with us previously. All bodies of any age count as a person but we do not charge for infants (under 1 year, not yet walking).

The Haus is right in town and within easy walking distance to the upper Sacramento River, many superb restaurants, the brew pub and shops. You can be fishing after a 5-minute stroll, or skiing Shasta less than a half hour from the Haus.

Guests are always impressed with the Haus. One party wrote: 'We felt spoiled to be staying in such a cozy, comfortable and spacious place.' They developed a fondness for the Keurig coffee maker as well as Dunsmuir Brewery Works!

You'll find our kitchen has all of the basics, plus a Keurig coffee system, regular coffee maker, juicer, Cuisinart and extensive bakeware. There is a fine china dining set as well as a casual set. Casual glassware and crystal. We have high-speed Wi-Fi (but please limit streaming as it depletes this very expensive service which is already set at the largest and most expensive download amount we can get). There is also a docking station you can attach your phone to for music. Unfortunatley, a party of 4 or more, all with electronic devices, wipes out our monthly allotment in a few days. This seems impossible for folks from more-populated areas but is a fact for Dunsmuir.

We don't have water filtration because we don't need it. Dunsmuir really does have the best water on earth. It receives no chemicals because it doesn't need them. The water is so good, locals take their water with them when they travel!

There is a mud room for outdoor footwear, skiing and fishing gear. The kitchen opens onto the delightful, private patio which has a Weber BBQ and a fire pit with some firewood. Kids enjoy the glider and adults love the privacy.

Antiques such as the Victorian iron & brass bed and fine handcrafted furnishings are everywhere. Whimsical touches include trout lights around the top of the stunning four poster queen bed in the master bedroom.

The living room looks out on the lovely mountains and is filled with morning sun. It has a leather couch and loveseat; a nice futon that becomes a double bed and a library of excellent books. An oak electric fireplace with really pretty LED flames provides additional heat and wonderful ambiance.

Downstairs one of the bedrooms has a faux Franklin wood stove with attractive flames and can be operated with or without the heater. Both beds can see the firebox since there are side viewing panes on the stove.

There is a full laundry complete with detergent and dryer towels. One of the baths has an antique ball & claw foot tub, while the other has a modern tub and shower.

Although it can sleep 8+, we hold it to 6, unless we have rented to a party before and know they are very good about taking care of our place. Do not consider asking for parties that exceed 8; it just won't happen.

We own & run Trinity River Adventure Inn River Cabins in Trinity County. We created Alpine Ski & Fish Haus as a vacation rental as well as our own ski getaway, so it is especially well-appointed and situated. Although located just 2 minutes from Interstate 5, our place avoids the constant hum of freeway traffic. This was a big deal to us, and it ruled out several places in our search.

You can be fishing after a 5-minute walk to the Upper Sacramento River, plus there are many more beloved fishing areas within minutes from Dunsmuir. Hedge Creek Falls at the north end of town is not to be missed.

We love the sound of the train going through town, but are also far enough from the tracks that it doesn't sound as though the train's running through the house. We just hear the romantic whistle as the trains come through.

Best of all, in this steep little mountain town, all of the great, close-by attractions are within an easy, mostly-level 10-minute walk. Read farther down to learn about them.

Dunsmuir has entranced us with its fabulous highlights so close to our place. All of these are in walking distance from the Haus:

~Dunsmuir Tire: a super asset for us and our guests. If you're having car trouble, they offer many services (they saved us when a thermostat went out on our vehicle!), plus they sell and service tires and install chains. The manager is Tony and he's a peach.

~La Perla de Nayarit Mexican Restaurant opened Summer 2016 and was immediately embraced due to its large menu, good food and prices and the fact it is family-owned and operated. Kids fit right in; their kids bus tables.

~Cafe' Maddalena is a tiny jewel of a restaurant, and it has exquisite food. Eat outside under the grape arbor in summer!

~Dogwood Diner may have the best homemade corned beef hash ever, and dog people can dine outside at sidewalk tables with their dogs.

~Dunsmuir Brewery Works has fine brews and creative food. Their patio is dog-friendly.

New restaurants and shops just opened, so there is more to explore.

And because we cater to fishers at both of our locations, we are thrilled to have Ted Fay Fly Shop nearby. It is a legendary shop and has been in Dunsmuir for over 50 years.

Try Alpine Ski & Fish Haus once and you'll be hooked. You'll also receive a very nice discount for a future stay at our Trinity River cabins, adding to your exploration possibilities. Once you see our website, you can see how much we have to offer. Call us for the link.

"The place is wonderful for us; having a great time. Skiing is awesome. Love Dunsmuir and the [100% pure] water, the brew pub and your nicely stocked kitchen. We love to cook, and travel with our knives, pepper grinder, good salt, etc. Not needed here! Nice iPod docking station and comfy beds. The whole trip has been great. Enjoying your homey place so much, too. We have stayed in so many different places and you never know quite what to expect, but you guys have put so much into making the place comfortable, clean, organized, and sweet.

Sometimes go to Tahoe but much prefer the less crowded and peaceful vibe of places like this! Will definitely hope to return sometime. I had a great walk around town, everyone is so friendly. Having fantasies of moving up here. Maybe someday... sigh. Much thanks." Becca Durkee/Oakland, CA

"We very much enjoyed our stay at your house! It was cozy, warm and had everything that we needed. We spent the day snowboarding on Mt. Shasta and taking walks around Dunsmuir.

It was perfect for us and the kids. Plenty of space for everyone. We have no suggestions, but THANK YOU for this opportunity!!" Maura Traylor/Danville, CA

About Heidi & Steph

Steph Dutton is a world-renowned kayaker who paddled from Canada to Mexico, then paddled the Oregon coast again, in the winter. He also circumnavigated California's Channel Islands, often enduring thirty foot seas.

Heidi Tiura owned and operated several businesses before running away to sea and working on tugboats in Alaska, Washington and Oregon.

Steph and Heidi are both Coast Guard licensed masters (captains), and creators of Sanctuary Cruises on the Monterey Bay. They have been featured in numerous books and documentaries for their work with whales (including National Geographic's 'Whale Attack,' which was based on their Mother's Day 2004 whale watching cruise).

Now, they live on the upper Trinity River and their kayak adventures are of a tamer sort. When not rafting or kayaking with their dogs and guests, they can usually be found on their motorcycles, because Trinity County has some of the best roads in the world for riding bikes.

And if not riding their bikes, they're up at their Dunsmuir place, Alpine Fish & Ski Haus. For them, Dunsmuir is the Big City.

Heidi & Steph purchased this house in 2011

Why Heidi & Steph chose Dunsmuir

We love skiing Shasta and although the drive from Trinity County was doable in a day, it made for a very long day. Things snowballed from there.

What makes this house unique

Where we live on the Trinity River, we have a 10-20 minute drive to any stores or restaurants. We'd never live somewhere else, but love having the attractions of Dunsmuir just a few minutes' walk or bike ride away.

Notes:
Cell phones work throughout Dunsmuir/I-5 Corridor; best outside haus or at front of living room. Shops to delight everyone. Walking distance to truly exceptional restaurants and the brew pub. Close to Dunsmuir Tire which is great for putting on chains and repairs. Close enough to train depot you can walk to it, but far enough from tracks it won't sound as though the train is going through the haus. Just a couple of minutes off I-5, but you hear very little freeway noise, even from the patio

Great fishing cottage

  • 4 of 5

Importantly, note that when I go on a fishing trip, I’m there to fish. The accommodations are about sleeping, showering and getting ready to fish.

Owners are super nice and very helpful. They seem like people I’d love to hang out with.

Alpine house was perfect for four guys on a fishing trip, and probably could’ve comfortably housed a few more. You’ll need to be comfortable around each other, as you have to pass a sleeping person to get to the bathrooms if you have 4 or more people.

Kitchen was adequate to prepare meals and had all of the tools needed, but there are really good restaurants in Dunsmuir if you don’t want to cook. (Okay, no four star steak houses, but great brew pub, pizza place, burger joint, and a few others I didn’t try.)

One AC window unit in living room upstairs can make that room a little chilly if you’re trying to cool the whole house - night temps are generally pleasant in May, but might be something to consider in June/July.

Location is perfect. If you wanted, you could literally walk a couple of blocks and pull rainbows out of the upper Sac. 5-10 minute drive to river access points where you’re likely to encounter no one. 30 minutes from Camp Ah-Di-Na on the legendary McCloud River.

Beautiful place to visit.

Owner's Response: I'm with you, Bob. You guys would be a kick to hang out with. We often don't get the chance to meet guests since we live up on the Trinity River 100 miles away but I got the chance by dropping in to handle a few jobs in the garden. Had I not been facing the long drive home we might have had a nice visit out on the patio. The A/C actually does a really good job with summer's heat. A fan in the trout bedroom moves the cool air around and the downstairs always is cool since it is partially subterranean. Consider a fishing trip up to the Trinity and we can visit since Sow's Ear is just up the drive from us and a 5-minute stroll to Bucktail Hole for summer and fall salmon! All the best, heidi

Decent

  • 3 of 5

We had good time at Mt Shasta and Lake Siskiyou. House is conveniently located.

Pros:

- House was nice, clean and well kept

- Convenient location

Cons:

- Immediate surrounding of house is kinda run down

- Main bedroom was hot even after running fan to full capacity as AC is wall unit attached to living room

- Requirement to clean dirt & hair from floor is too much after paying cleaning fees

Owner's Response: Hi Vipul, Thanks for writing a review. We strive to provide a nice, clean and comfortable place for our guests and it sounds as though you enjoyed it. About cleaning: Although it seems incomprehensible to most, we have had guests who assumed trekking in mud and gravel from river shoes was entirely acceptable because they were staying in a rental and who cared? The same goes for dog hair. It has taken over an hour of dedicated extra vacuuming to remove hair thanks to guests who felt a heavily-shedding dog should be allowed on all of the furniture because it wasn't their home and who cared? That's why we started with a basic statement for guests outlining our expectations. Those who do sweep or use their noodles with their animals are appreciated but those who don't are made aware we have standards just as they should. It is a tricky thing finding a balance between being preachy and simply stating common sense facts but I think we do a pretty good job at it overall. Regarding the master bedroom's temperature, all I can say is we have had record-breaking heat and some nights--rarely--don't cool down sufficiently. We had a few of those where we live on the Trinity River as well but for the most part, the A/C and fans are more than adequate. When we're at the Haus we sleep in the same bedroom you slept in and I can only think of a couple of summer nights when it seemed uncomfortable. I'm sorry your visit coincided with one og those nights. And finally, we can't control the neighborhood, only our place. Our neighbors vary as in most towns and we're happy that almost every person who passes us on the street says hi or asks how we are. Dunsmuir is special in that regard.

Very clean and comfortable stay.

  • 4 of 5

The house was very clean, well stocked and taken care of. There were lots of nice little touches. We were a party of three couples. My husband and I stayed in the upstairs bedroom which I think was the best out of the three. One couple reported that their bed was softer than they liked which affected their sleep. We liked the proximity to the downtown, the beautiful local park, fishing, and the beautiful roads leading to McCloud. We spent a couple of hours in McCloud visiting the little shops and going to a great coffee place with a very good bakery. Much of the weekend it was pouring rain and the house kept us warm and snug. On the flip side, having no internet access was definitely an inconvenience. Some of us had work to do which required the internet. Others of us had to use a ton of our data since there was no connection. All in all, we had a good stay. We would recommend this house to others especially if the internet gets fixed. Thank you!

Owner's Response: We are happy that these folks had a good time and enjoyed our Ski Haus. However, we are distressed that they did not phone us about the problems with the internet. This is a newly installed system and the installer did not follow our instructions on what to name the network and password. With a simple phone call, we could have easily guided them to having full internet access.

Great Haus!

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful house in a neat little town. Dunsmuir is small but have almost everything you need for vacation: good brewery (DBW, thumb up), a handful of great restaurants (we went to the Mexican place twice and could probably go again if we stayed longer!), a neat hardware store, and a little grocery place (maybe? We went to Weed though, which is not far away).

Ok, the Haus, as they call it, is clean with plenty of room to sleep maybe 10 people! It is on a major road of the town so everything is within walking distance. Some of us walked to the river that is only a couple blocks away. The owners seem to stay here sometimes too, there are books and some personal pictures around, making it extra cozy and homey. There is one shower and one bathtub in the house, but hopefully people could work that out.

Heidi and Steph are really kind owners. We were in email contact before the trip when they provided tons of information. I was surprised when they emailed me even during our visit just to make sure everything is alright. We enjoyed it, and would definitely come back to this Haus if we visit Shasta area again.

Haus, Dunsmuir,Ca

When first entering there is a musty odor.To many rules! Backyard chairs and table were dirty with bird dropping on them. Bed on landing area, was made with a sleeping bag and no sheets.

Why is it that a guest has to be an IT expert to use the TV? Enjoyed Dunsmuir, the Haus, not so much.

Owner's Response: It's too bad this party did not enjoy the Haus, but there are a few questionable comments. When the reservation was made months ago, I contacted this party several times in a friendly manner and got no reply ever. We feel it's better to lay out expectations (rules) so guests know what they are. I sent this guest our welcome book with those rules as well as a lot of cool info on the area, but I doubt it was ever looked at. Had it been, he could have chosen another place if he didn't like our approach. On day 2 of their 2-night stay, we got a call telling us their ETA. We called back to make sure they knew there was a problem. They did not pay attention to their reserved dates and lost one night. It sure wasn't our fault, but we told them we'd have given them a 2nd night on the day they were to leave, but it was already booked. Our housekeeper is excellent and she did clean the table and chairs outside the day before these guests were to arrive, meaning they arrived a day and a half afterward. The dining set is under a great shade tree, a large oak with birds in it. Not much we can do about that. She also thoughtfully dropped by and turned on the A/C a few hours before they were to arrive. I guess it ran straight for 24+ hours. Considering the thorough cleaning job our housekeeper does, I don't know why the guests felt the Haus smelled musty. It never has when we have stayed there and there are so many flowers in bloom in the garden that simply opening the windows should have been enough to freshen the place. We do not have any beds without full linens, blankets and bed spreads. We have NO sleeping bags on any bed, so what can I say about that comment? I wonder if he has the right property. Many of our guests have told us they didn't care much for regular TV, but they wanted fast internet and many parties use several devices at once, so we opted for increasing the not-inexpensive internet package and cut the cable TV. The Smart TV in the Haus has Netflix and Amazon Prime as well as PBS, 24-hour news channels and more. One turns on the TV, selects which program to watch and follows the prompts. As we say in our welcome book and on the guest check-in sheet, if the guests find anything amiss, or if they have questions, all they have to do is call and we will handle it. But they do have to contact us. Nobody did.
