About Heidi & Steph
Steph Dutton is a world-renowned kayaker who paddled from Canada to Mexico, then paddled the Oregon coast again, in the winter. He also circumnavigated California's Channel Islands, often enduring thirty foot seas. Heidi Tiura owned and operated several businesses before running away to sea and working on tugboats in Alaska, Washington and Oregon. Steph and Heidi are both Coast Guard licensed masters (captains), and creators of Sanctuary Cruises on the Monterey Bay. They have been featured in numerous books and documentaries for their work with whales (including National Geographic's 'Whale Attack,' which was based on their Mother's Day 2004 whale watching cruise). Now, they live on the upper Trinity River and their kayak adventures are of a tamer sort. When not rafting or kayaking with their dogs and guests, they can usually be found on their motorcycles, because Trinity County has some of the best roads in the world for riding bikes. And if not riding their bikes, they're up at their Dunsmuir place, Alpine Fish & Ski Haus. For them, Dunsmuir is the Big City.
Heidi & Steph purchased this House in 2011
Why Heidi & Steph chose Dunsmuir
We love skiing Shasta and although the drive from Trinity County was doable in a day, it made for a very long day. Things snowballed from there.
What makes this House unique
Where we live on the Trinity River, we have a 10-20 minute drive to any stores or restaurants. We'd never live somewhere else, but love having the attractions of Dunsmuir just a few minutes' walk or bike ride away.

A very nice home for a family vacation.
We enjoyed our stay and would love to return in the future.
We're really glad you enjoyed the Fish & Ski Haus! We were up there skiing just before your visit and found, as visitors, it had everything we needed. Of course, setting it up was our job but it's nice hearing it worked well for you, especially!
Overall okay house could have used more toilet paper but otherwise okay
Some additional housecleaning behind the beds would save the next folks surprises. Spider webs are behind the beds that we found while trying to use the electrical outlets. Small things like that would have made the stay even better.
Very nice property
Was a very nice area and stay.
We had good time at Mt Shasta and Lake Siskiyou. House is conveniently located.
- House was nice, clean and well kept
- Convenient location
- Immediate surrounding of house is kinda run down
- Main bedroom was hot even after running fan to full capacity as AC is wall unit attached to living room
- Requirement to clean dirt & hair from floor is too much after paying cleaning fees
Thanks for writing a review. We strive to provide a nice, clean and comfortable place for our guests and it sounds as though you enjoyed it.
About cleaning: Although it seems incomprehensible to most, we have had guests who assumed trekking in mud and gravel from river shoes was entirely acceptable because they were staying in a rental and who cared?
The same goes for dog hair. It has taken over an hour of dedicated extra vacuuming to remove hair thanks to guests who felt a heavily-shedding dog should be allowed on all of the furniture because it wasn't their home and who cared?
That's why we started with a basic statement for guests outlining our expectations. Those who do sweep or use their noodles with their animals are appreciated but those who don't are made aware we have standards just as they should. It is a tricky thing finding a balance between being preachy and simply stating common sense facts but I think we do a pretty good job at it overall.
Regarding the master bedroom's temperature, all I can say is we have had record-breaking heat and some nights--rarely--don't cool down sufficiently. We had a few of those where we live on the Trinity River as well but for the most part, the A/C and fans are more than adequate. When we're at the Haus we sleep in the same bedroom you slept in and I can only think of a couple of summer nights when it seemed uncomfortable. I'm sorry your visit coincided with one og those nights.
And finally, we can't control the neighborhood, only our place. Our neighbors vary as in most towns and we're happy that almost every person who passes us on the street says hi or asks how we are. Dunsmuir is special in that regard.
Great fishing cottage
Importantly, note that when I go on a fishing trip, I’m there to fish. The accommodations are about sleeping, showering and getting ready to fish.
Owners are super nice and very helpful. They seem like people I’d love to hang out with.
Alpine house was perfect for four guys on a fishing trip, and probably could’ve comfortably housed a few more. You’ll need to be comfortable around each other, as you have to pass a sleeping person to get to the bathrooms if you have 4 or more people.
Kitchen was adequate to prepare meals and had all of the tools needed, but there are really good restaurants in Dunsmuir if you don’t want to cook. (Okay, no four star steak houses, but great brew pub, pizza place, burger joint, and a few others I didn’t try.)
One AC window unit in living room upstairs can make that room a little chilly if you’re trying to cool the whole house - night temps are generally pleasant in May, but might be something to consider in June/July.
Location is perfect. If you wanted, you could literally walk a couple of blocks and pull rainbows out of the upper Sac. 5-10 minute drive to river access points where you’re likely to encounter no one. 30 minutes from Camp Ah-Di-Na on the legendary McCloud River.
Beautiful place to visit.
I'm with you, Bob. You guys would be a kick to hang out with. We often don't get the chance to meet guests since we live up on the Trinity River 100 miles away but I got the chance by dropping in to handle a few jobs in the garden. Had I not been facing the long drive home we might have had a nice visit out on the patio.
The A/C actually does a really good job with summer's heat. A fan in the trout bedroom moves the cool air around and the downstairs always is cool since it is partially subterranean.
Consider a fishing trip up to the Trinity and we can visit since Sow's Ear is just up the drive from us and a 5-minute stroll to Bucktail Hole for summer and fall salmon! All the best, heidi
Very clean and comfortable stay.
The house was very clean, well stocked and taken care of. There were lots of nice little touches. We were a party of three couples. My husband and I stayed in the upstairs bedroom which I think was the best out of the three. One couple reported that their bed was softer than they liked which affected their sleep. We liked the proximity to the downtown, the beautiful local park, fishing, and the beautiful roads leading to McCloud. We spent a couple of hours in McCloud visiting the little shops and going to a great coffee place with a very good bakery. Much of the weekend it was pouring rain and the house kept us warm and snug. On the flip side, having no internet access was definitely an inconvenience. Some of us had work to do which required the internet. Others of us had to use a ton of our data since there was no connection. All in all, we had a good stay. We would recommend this house to others especially if the internet gets fixed. Thank you!
We are happy that these folks had a good time and enjoyed our Ski Haus. However, we are distressed that they did not phone us about the problems with the internet. This is a newly installed system and the installer did not follow our instructions on what to name the network and password. With a simple phone call, we could have easily guided them to having full internet access.
Walking distance to Dunsmuir Brewery Works, Cafe' Maddalena, Dogwood Diner and many more superb restaurants.
Wonderful antique, clothing, art and other stores nearby
