Our vacation rental is located walking distance (few blocks) to South Congress Ave (SOCO),
a hip strip that features an array of eclectic shops, restaurants, bars, boutiques, antiques, music venues and galleries. Every first Thursday of the month, stores remain open until 10pm.
Years ago when people talked about Austin they would quickly mention the music. But that's just the beginning of what they're saying these days. Austin is also home to a wonderful ballet, world-class museums, one-of-a-kind shopping and beautiful outdoor spaces. You can just as easily spend your morning paddling the lake as you can strolling through a celebrated history museum. And it's okay if you don't have time to fit it all in, you can just come back and visit us again.
South Congress Avenue and South Lamar Boulevard deliver offbeat shopping and dining and legendary live music haunts including the Broken Spoke, the last of the true Texas dance halls, the legendary Continental Club and the Saxon Pub. First Thursdays on South Congress offer a pedestrian-friendly atmosphere that brings the musicians to the street and shopping late into the evening where funky galleries, vintage shops, clothing and furniture stores, jewelry shops and salons stay open until 10:00pm (or later). South congress is Austin’s SoHo, eclectic and fun.
On South Congress Avenue, two to three blocks are filled with a diverse selection of quirky shops featuring everything from ’50s-style furniture to folk art. Boot shops, galleries, antiques and other curiosities fill quaint boutiques. In between the shops, visitors will find a wide variety of culinary delights.
There’s no place quite like South Austin, a wonderful hodgepodge of eclectic storefronts, people, architecture and sheer funk.
And South First Street, a busy thoroughfare that is a straight shot from downtown, provides a taste of that über-cool scene, from the automotive shops and art galleries housed in tiny cottages to the restaurants and day spas. We like to park, walk, and take it all in.
South First has blossomed into a very diverse restaurant row, with places like Sway, Elizabeth Street Cafe, and Lenoir.
Other fun activities in Travis Heights:
Travis Heights has two community pools that are absolutely free to use and are a very popular place on the weekends in the summer. Both are located at the center of the neighborhood, so they’re convenient for nearly every resident.
1. Located in Big Stacy Park at 700 East Live Oak St, Stacy Pool is the pool you go to when you want to swim laps. Most of the pool is set up for lane swim, so its the perfect place to get some exercise. There are a few parking spots right near the entrance to the pool, but your best bet would be to park on the street.
2. If you’re looking to hang out in the pool and lounge, Little Stacy Wading Pool is more your style. Located at 1400 Alameda Drive, Little Stacy Park is a popular hang out during the summer. Little Stacy Park also has volleyball, open green space and is the perfect place to spend a summer day.
You can walk everywhere, but you can also catch a Uber ride for $5 or a $10 Uber ride for downtown (Uber is a fantastic app, fast and cheap)
Places you might want to check out!
1.Hotel San Jose bar
1316 S Congress Ave
This private, understated patio par sits in the hotel grounds. Frequented by the creative, artistic types seeking asylum from the Texas heat, the bar serves a small but fine selection of beer, wine and sake, as well as quite possibly the most refreshing sangria in town. Hotelier Liz Lambert (of the Bunkhouse Group) is behind the minimalistic south-western design accented with desert plants, vibrant red glassware, and a consistently killer soundtrack.
2. Continental Club
1315 S Congress Ave
Some great band is always on stage, the drinks are good, and its always a very diverse crowd.
3. Crow Bar
3116 S Congress Ave
Awesome outdoor seating, delicious beverages and a food truck outside.
4. Sugar Mama’s Bakeshop
1905 S 1st St
Sugar Mama's Bakeshop DEFINITELY lives up to the hype!!! Not only are the cupcakes and macarons amazing, but the service is fantastic, and the entire shop is adorable.
5. Home Slice Pizza
1415 S Congress St
Home Slice Pizza is an independent neighborhood pizza joint serving authentic NY-style pizza—by the pie or by the slice. They offer homemade, hand tossed, bona fide pies for either dine in or carry out.
6. Torchy’s Tacos
1311 S 1st St
Torchy's is a must visit anytime you are in Austin.
7. Barley Swine
2024 S Lamar Blvd
Barley Swine is one of my favorite restaurant in Austin!
8. Odd Duck
1201 South Lamar Boulevard
The food is mostly perfect, the Moscow mule is delicious and the wait staff is great!
1417 S 1st St
Sleek, modern, lively and tasty food
Sway is one of Austin's hottest restaurants.
10.Elizabeth Street cafe
1501 S 1st St
An upscale little place, serving a classic Vietnamese menu – think báhn mì, vermicelli bowls, steamed buns, and pho, plus Vietnamese coffee and French bakery items – made largely with locally sourced ingredients, including pastured meats and eggs and organic produce from area farms.
Another of my favorite spot in Austin!
11. Hopdoddy Burger Bar
1400 S. Congress
This hugely successful "crafted" hamburger restaurant boasts premium ingredients and inventive flavor combinations. With unforgettable burgers, including tuna, lamb, bison, and vegetarian, as well as several Angus beef burgers, Hopdoddy also features an impressive selection of locally brewed, small-batch beers and ales
1807 S. First
With its spectacular, category-defying cuisine, picture-perfect plate presentation, an expertly selected wine list, superb service, and cozy shabby-chic aesthetic, Lenoir is living proof that Austin has arrived in the culinary big leagues.
1400 S. Congress
It's hard to beat Perla's on a sunny afternoon for fresh oysters, grilled octopus, and a Caesar cocktail on the shady patio – although I still miss the marvelous shrimp escabeche they used to serve. The wine list is full of amazing gems, but prices lean toward the high end.
