Overview

About the property

House, 5 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps up to 16)

Private oceanfront house located on Oahu's West (Waianae) Coast near Makaha Surfing Beach. Enjoy the deep-blue ocean and great sunsets from the lanai and large grass lawn. Nap to the sound of the waves. The property fronts coral reefs and is five houses to a sandy cove where green turtles come to shore and bask in the sand.

This estate consists of 2200 sq. ft of living space -- 1400 sq. ft 3BR 2BA on the second level (main house) and an additional 800 sq. ft 2BR 1.5 BA on the first level (ohana unit or in-law suite with separate entrance).

The main house is upstairs and consists of three bedrooms, two full baths, and is great for two families. Has a well stocked kitchen, living room, and is fully-furnished with 100% cotton sheets, towels, and beach towels. Comfortably sleeps up to 10. Three king size beds-one in each bedroom, two full size sofa beds with 3" memory foam toppers in the family room. We also a single futon mattress and 2 pack-n-plays. Updated in November 2016 with new living room, dining room, and family room furniture.

The ohana unit (in-law suite) downstairs consists of two bedrooms and 1.5 baths (comfortably sleeps up to 6). Full wet bar (a kitchen without a stove or oven), living room, fully-furnished with cotton sheets, towels and beach towels. One bedroom has 1 full size bed, the other bedroom has 2 full size beds. There is also a full-size pull-out couch in the living room. Great for teens and for those with limited mobility (no stairs). Includes Smart TV w/ basic cable and Amazon TV.

Please note: there is no interior access between the ohana/in-law suite and the main house. You must use the exterior stairs to go from one unit to the other. Also, as a disclaimer, I should note the ceilings between the upper floor and ground floor are thin. Not too bad for adults, but children tend to stomp, and those little footsteps can be heard clearly from downstairs.

For smaller groups, please ask about special pricing for only the main upstairs dwelling (3BR / 2 BA), sleeps up to 10 comfortably.

There is high speed internet access for your laptop/tablet/phone throughout, and cell phone reception is good.

Out of respect for my neighbors, I do not allow large functions, parties, or weddings. Only registered guests may stay at the property.

The beach cove (2 minute walk away) is one of the few places were sea turtles frequent most days, you can snorkel with them and tropical fish like Humu'humu'nuku'nuku'apua'a

Makaha is on the west coast of Oahu about 20 min past Ko-Olina and the Disney Aulani resort. The road ends five miles further up at beautiful Yokohama Beach. The west side (Waianae Coast) is a slice of local culture, a great place to go slow and enjoy the beauty. The house sits two blocks from the main road in a quiet neighborhood, with an automatic gate and lots of parking. Restaurants and shopping are three miles away in the town of Waianae (why-an-eye). It is about 45 minutes from the Honolulu Airport and an hour from Waikiki.

This is a non-smoking house, but outside and on the lanai is fine.

Ummm YES! Larger groups take note! The BEST

  • 5 of 5

We are in love. A group of 16 from our coffee roasting company made this trek. 16 adults that work together on a daily basis did not feel crowded in this roomy and well laid out casa. Plenty of bathroom options. Plenty of kitchen space. Plenty of lanai space. The yard is gorgeous and private. Everything was in working order, very clean, and easy instructions for everything. Ashley is adorable and helpful and welcoming. We love the Makaha area. Don't be scared off by what others say about this charming area. If you are warm and welcoming, they are warm and welcoming. Lots of fabulous beach options that are sometimes busy but never crowded. Whales, dolphins, turtles out front. LOTS of turtles at the cove. Snorkeling, body surfing and surfing nearby. Our favorite beaches: Makaha, Pokai, Makua and Yokahama Bay. Makua does not have a life guard and can be rough but is stunning beyond belief. Great food options and Tamura market is the bomb. They have everything you will need with really fair prices, and you can pick up a lot of Hawai'in spices and condiments there. Da Crawfish and Crab Shack down the road is killer for all things seafood. Great happy hour prices too! Hawai'i is magic for us business owners and it was delightful to share it with our employees. A great reboot for everyone. Rest assured if you book this home that everything will be smooth. Communication was great from booking to checkout (and even some after, thanks Ashley!). We would book this again in a second.

Beautiful Oceanfront House in Leeward

  • 5 of 5

Our family really wish we stayed here longer. Although this is not a Beachfront property, the Oceanfront is equally astonishing. Plus, the closest beach (Aki's Beach) is only 5 houses away, and Makaha Beach is 3 minute drive. Turtles go out in Aki's Beach to sun bathe. But PLEASE give them space and keep your distance from them (10ft/3m). The photo with the beach chair is actually a seawall. On the other side are tidepools.

The house is two levels. The lower level is more modern than the upper level, but it's a 2BR/1.5Ba. Upstairs is a 3BR/2Ba fora Combined 5Br/3.5Ba. It is in the leeward side of Oahu, so it's a bit more like a province which adds to the charm. There are grocery stores nearby, as well as a really good poke to-go shop, Aloha Poke.

Pros:

-Easy access to beaches

-A lot of utensils/plates

-Friendly Property Manager

-Very welcoming cleaners (if you get a chance to meet them)

-Spacious backyard

-Gated house

-Washer and Dryer included

-Lots of beach toys/accessories (boogie board, flippers, etc)

-Outdoor shower to water down sand

-Comfortable and spacious house

-Very clean house (Gotta give it up to the cleaners. They're fantastic)

-Quiet neighborhood

-Property Manager is very good with communications

-Easy to relax

Caveats: (Instead of Cons because these are VERY minor)

-It can get warm especially on your first day as all the windows are closed. But open the windows, turn on the exhaust fan (no more than 10 mins) and temperature would drop right away. It was windy during our stay too which helped with the cooling. Listening to the breeze and ocean waves crash at night is VERY VERY relaxing

-It's far from HNL airport, about 45 mins. But that's ok as this is far from city and like what I mentioned, it's province. So it's quiet and definitely relaxing

-Mosquitoes: where are there no mosquitoes in a tropical island? The owner provides bug spray and mosquito repellent coils so you can relax in the porch

All in all, there were 7 of us that stayed and we were all very happy and sad to leave this house. If we were to stay in Leeward side again, we would definitely check if this house is available.

Great house with beautiful sunsets

  • 5 of 5

I was looking for a house that was ocean-front but close enough to the beach. I got exactly what I wanted. The best way to describe the house is to list pros and cons from my stay.

Pros:

- Large house which can sleep 16 comfortably if doubling up

- Ocean front view with amazing sunsets

- About 45 mins from airport and a little longer from the city center

- Ashley the caretaker was very friendly and helpful

- Well-equipped kitchen upstairs and extra kitchen (without stove/oven) downstairs. So great for cooking, serving and feeding the group

- West side of the island had near perfect weather while the other parts were under clouds and some rain. My understanding that this is often the case especially in the winter.

- The beautiful yard was well-maintained

- There is a small neighborhood beach cove where the sea turtles rest in the afternoon. Not great for swimming by the beach but better further out in the ocean.

- It's a ten to fifteen minute walk north to the closest public beach and the water temperature, color and waves were perfect for swimming

Cons:

- Don't stay out there if you want to be close to the action. There isn't any nightlife and only a handful of restaurants.

- The neighborhood and the surrounding areas are what people would describe as "transitional". It didn't bother me as I have lived in many urban areas all over the world. But if you're not used to it then I can see how it can be a culture shock. The house has a secure gate with parking so I never really felt scared or worried.

- The internet went out for a day and we had difficulty fixing it.

- The decor in the kitchen, dining and family area was much nicer than the living room.

Quite and beautiful.

  • 5 of 5

This place was wonderful. It felt more like home than my house. The view of rhe turtles eating and swimming every morning was amazing. We saw dolphins swim by in a distance from the deck as well. We went down to Turtle Cove 5 houses down and saw the turtles lying on the beach. Two turtles even swam right by us in the water. The natural environment was amazing. The owner and manager was awsome. Anything we needed they helped us out. They gave us somethings we didn't have to buy for the wedding. There was enough beds for all of us. The ocean breeze coming thru the windows at night was great for sleeping and our sinuses cleared up while we were there. I would not want to stay in some fancy hotel. The security here was better. The kids played in the yard daily. The wall protected them from getting in the ocean without us knowing. I did not mind the hour drive to the statium for the swap meet. It is a very good place to get anything you want. I loved the Japanese culture here. I could go on and on. This place is good for groups and anyone that wants peace and see the beautiful island.

Great views. OK accommodations

  • 3 of 5

The backyard and deck are good. The views are fantastic!!! The unfortunate part is the house itself. It is rundown, in desperate need of new mattresses and bedding (bring your own pillows!), floor and bathroom upgrades. NO AC! Several overhead fans were not working. Yes, it is 5br, but 3 br and 2 baths are up a huge outdoor flight of stairs. The downstairs is NOT accessible any way other than outdoors. Very long drive from Honolulu and tourist attractions so plan a 1 hr drive to go anywhere. Although in sort of a "mixed" neighborhood of nicely remodeled homes and others, the neighbors are sweet as can be.

Owner's Response: I'm sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your 3 night stay in my home. I do encourage people to read my listing in full prior to booking. The house may be simple, but it is not "rundown". The house is kept clean and is well maintained. Problems are fixed promptly once reported, and linens are replaced on a regular basis with 100% cotton 400+ thread count sheets. Many believe the firm mattresses are comfy (including myself). It is unfortunate we could not fix the one ceiling fan that wasn't working while you were there. It was fixed shortly thereafter, and 2 ceiling fans are scheduled to be replaced later this month as part of our preemptive maintenance program. Your visit was during low season (September)....perhaps the weather had adverse effects on your review.
