About Leslie Gearhart
I was born in Newton, Iowa and have lived in DSM since 1984. I was co-owner of Metropolitan Properties for 19 years. We were a woman owned company that started by purchasing substandard central city properties we rehabbed ourselves to provides safe rental housing for women and their children primarily. In 2000 we won a 7 month long fight to save the Arlington and Hallet apartment buildings from demolition in downtown Des Moines. We had both buildings placed on the National Historic Register. They are located at 1301 & 1305 Locust St. adjacent to the Pappajohn Sculpture Park in the Western Gateway. We sold those 2 builldings and most of the 152 units we had aquired over the years to slow down. My former business partner kept one of our buildings and I started HomeBaseDSM to provide short term, furnished rental housing.
Leslie Gearhart purchased this House in 2014
Why Leslie Gearhart chose Beaverdale
I made an offer to buy this house the first time I saw it. I love older homes, love Des Moines, and the Beaverdale neighborhood is teriffic. I have made a living rehabbing older properties in Des Moines for over 25 years and while I wanted to slow down, I am not ready to retire. This property had fairly good care over its interesting life. However it still required significant investment in rehab and updates. Just the thing I love to do.
What makes this House unique
This home has a great vibe and it very comfortable to be in. It has beautiful hardwood floors downstairs, a fireplace and large livingroom. I fell in love with the private back yard. I also love that it is within walking distance of the Beaverdale Business district.

Sports & Adventure Activities
This home was perfect for our weekend with friends. It is in a great location for enjoying all parts of Des Moines. Leslie was very accessible and went the extra mile to ensure all of our questions were answered and made us feel very welcome! Could not have asked for a better home to spend the weekend at.

A GREAT PLACE FOR FAMILY TIME
This is a wonderful house with lots of nooks for being alone and large spaces to gather together. While the kitchen is on the small side so hard to have more than one cook, it has everything you need. Lots of little extras like locally roasted coffee and sweet treats. Also, a fair amount of kid stuff to make baby travel easier. A wonderful back yard for warm weather fun. Our family enjoyed the house and the location. Owner is also very easy to deal with and can be flexible to make the visit more enjoyable. Highly recommend
Lovely home in great neighborhood
Great home in am adorable neighborhood. Leslie provided a wonderful home, clean, well stocked and also lots of info about the working of the home so there was never any confusion about how things worked. She left a lovely note to introduce us to the neighborhood and the delicious goody bag was very thoughtful. It was centrally located for all of our activities. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this home.
Great location for a Girls Weekend!
We had 7 ladies stay here for a long girls weekend. We received a very nice welcome basket of local area goodies upon our arrival. The house smelled of coffee and was very welcoming. Plenty of room for our group and great location for all our adventures...shopping, restaurants, winery and brewery, craft sale, etc. Also a very convenient grocery/liquor store just down the street.
The only downfall is the very long but skinny driveway on a busier street and the only TV was in the living room...none in the bedrooms. However--would definitely stay here again!
Great owner and visit was relaxing but . . .
Leslie was easy to work with regarding this property and house was clean and well maintained. She also provided a nice "Welcome" bag filled with an assortment of goodies from the neighborhood vendors. We had a great time there and would not object to staying there again.
While we don't want this review to sound negative since we did enjoy our stay, there were a few items that were a bit inconvenient that we had to work around. We had four families staying at this property and while there is street parking, the street is on a main thoroughfare for the area and we didn't feel quite safe in leaving cars parked along the street. There is a narrow driveway so all four vehicles were parked in driveway. If anyone needed to leave, we had to play musical cars. The bedrooms were large and quite comfortable but some of the beds were so high that it was difficult for several of our party to get into bed at night. One joked that they almost needed a small step stool to climb into bed. But, once in bed, they slept like a dream as the mattresses were so comfy. Last area were the bathrooms. While newly remodeled, the downstairs bathroom in particular felt very cramped and one larger member of our party had difficulty using the toilet in that area as the toilet was placed in a narrow space between the wall that was next to the kitchen and the shower. Another side note, this property doesn't offer a lot of outdoor space for young children to play, so it might not be the best option for someone with small children who need to get rid of extra energy.
As I said, the home itself was a nice place to hold our family reunion (all 50+) and there were plenty of quaint area businesses to take in during afternoon walks. We had all the comforts of home and left relaxed and refreshed. And, despite the above comments regarding our perceived "inconveniences" we ARE considering a return visit in the future!
Plenty of room , everything you need!
Wonderful home with lots of room. Very clean and comfortable and great location for West Des Moines. Stayed for Solheim Cup!
