Chez Sullivan is our pied à terre in Provence, located at just a 5-minute walk from the town center of Vaison-la-Romaine, in view of the spectacular Mt. Ventoux and the medieval city. It offers an efficient and livable 400 sq. feet of space on the 4th floor (3eme étage français) of a 5-storey building comprising 11 units. The outer entrances to the building are secured by key or number pad. An elevator provides convenient access, though you may easily walk the stairs. Our local host will greet you at the apartment and show you how everything works.

You will find a sunny apartment, with a southern exposure, looking out on the medieval city and the Ouvèze River. A balcony with bistro table and chairs offers a pleasant spot for morning coffee, evening apéro or dinner for two. You may access the balcony from either the salon or the separate bedroom. The apartment has a bathroom (salle de bain) with bathtub/shower, sink and washer/dryer combo machine; there is a separate toilet room. There are tile floors throughout.

When we bought the apartment in 2007 for our own use, we renovated and updated it, including installing a new kitchen with tile backsplash and all new appliances: refrigerator, two-burner cook top, full oven, microwave, dishwasher and stainless sink. We added a small electric Weber barbecue on the balcony for nearly year-round grilling. We enjoy cooking at home so we have kitchen tools and small appliances that merit the space in a small apartment. The kitchen/dining table seats four.

The separate bedroom has a slightly larger than full/double bed, the standard 140 x 200 cm French size, and a comfortable mattress with topper. There are under-bed storage drawers as well as an open armoire and three separate storage drawers for your belongings. There are night stands with reading lamps on each side of the bed, a clock/radio/alarm and an overhead ceiling fan. Sleeping space for up to two more people is available when the comfortable sofa in the salon is opened to a full-size bed with innerspring mattress. The entire apartment is furnished in IKEA and Alinea, our favorites for comfort and utility, and the kitchen is by Augier, our local kitchen specialist.

Since we are US residents who live in the apartment ourselves for part of the year, communication is important to us. Our telephone service includes free international calls to landlines in 60+ countries and we subscribe to high-speed, wireless Internet and TV service. Our printer is available for guest use. We offer a library of French travel and language reference books, our own fiction and nonfiction library, and a small collection of DVDs from both Region 1 (US/Canada) and Region 2 (UK/France) for play on your own laptop or our TV using the HDMI cable provided. Our stereo radio/CD player has a docking station for your own iPod.

Our location puts you easily in walking distance to the post office, banks, bakeries, cafes, restaurants and grocery stores. The Tuesday market day in Vaison is one of the best in the area. The renowned Roman ruins are just a short walk away. Our local Tourist Information (TI) office in the center of town offers many ideas for local attractions to enjoy and our in-house resources offer suggestions as well. Stay at Chez Sullivan and experience the pleasures of the area we have come to love as our second home.

Why Mark and Ellen Sullivan chose Provence

We chose Vaison la Romaine for reasons we think many people make choices: both good planning and serendipity. :-) We had visited the area previously and liked the friendliness of the people and the just-right size for us. We visited again in September 2006 to plan for a future purchase and found “our” apartment waiting for us. We completed our purchase in 2007 and have been happy with our choice ever since.

What makes this apartment unique

Our apartment is a place that offers everything we need for comfortable day-to-day living in a smaller-is-better setting. It is sunny, well-equipped and perfect for two while allowing space for short-term overnight guests to join us. Our balcony gives us outdoor space and pleasant views. We can walk to anyplace in town we need to go and use a car only when we have out-of-town plans. Our building is small and neighbors are not strangers; they allow privacy while being available for support. Our rental guests to date have shared our feelings.

Your little nest has been a charming base for our rambles through the countryside and beyond - this week, we were in Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, Gordes, Roussillon, Lacoste, Gigondas, Le Crestet, Avignon and Arles - as well as a number of wineries along the way. We also enjoyed exploring Vaison la Romaine (new to us), especially the medieval city. The days have been warm and the evenings cool. We will have fond memories of this area.

A wonderful apartment in a wonderful town

My friend Natalie and I totally enjoyed our week at the Sullivan's apartment. Clean and well maintained, it is totally stocked with many thoughtful touches, has an incredible view of the medieval town, and gives off an ambience of relaxation and hominess. We found both the bed and the futon couch very comfortable for sleeping, and the library and CD selections are quite handy for those rainy days inside. The town is beautiful beyond description and full of Roman ruins, medieval buildings and a central plaza just made for people-watching. We spent several days just exploring all the wonders of Vaison. Their market day is one of the largest in Provence and fills the entire town--great fun! Eric, our manager, was always available and provided help in both regular and emergency situations--good man to have nearby! Mark and Ellen Sullivan have thought of everything to make your stay more comfortable; there is a parking space for your rental car and everything is within easy walking distance (or a short drive to the supermarket). We would easily return there if the opportunity arises.

Excellent Apartment and Location

We recently spent 6 weeks at Chez Sullivan and had a wonderful time there. When we made our reservation, the Sullivans were very responsive and answered all of our questions promptly. They were very easy to work with and left maps and lists of things to see, and their favorite restaurants and boulangeries to eat at. Their local property manager was easy to work with. He met us upon arrival and explained the apartment to us. The apartment is in an excellent location just 5 minutes walk to the downtown area or to Old Town across the Roman bridge. The apartment was the most well equipped we have encountered during our 6 months in Europe, with an abundance of spices, and a kitchen filled with cookware to allow you to make just about anything, which was great as we ate many meals on the terrace overlooking Old Town. Bistro du'O directly across from the apartment in Old Town is a Michelin starred restaurant and was excellent. There was also an excellent pizza restaurant next to Bistro du'O for a lighter meal.

The weather was sunny and hot during most of our stay(low to mid 90s). Although there was no air conditioning, a ceiling fan in the bedroom and a small fan in the living room made the apartment comfortable. We left the doors and windows open at night and it cooled off nicely.

There are over 100 wineries in the area, and numerous caves which have tastings all summer long. There is great shopping in town, and a huge market on Tuesdays which takes up the whole downtown area.

We highly recommend this apartment. We would go back in a heartbeat.

Just the best!

Chez Sullivan was better than I expected...the rooms are comfortable and pleasingly decorated, with more than enough space for luggage, clothing, and the paraphenalia of travel in addition to an easy to work in kitchen, a comfortable bed, a good bathroom--and that amazing view from the terrace. We ate every meal there, except once when it poured rain. I think in a light rain one would stay dry. The apartment was super clean and well organized. Everything you need is provided, including soap for the washing machine...which is perfect when you are on a long trip. Old town and the Roman ruins are an easy walk away, but so is the Super U to stock up on anything you need. You can easily drive to so many lovely places nearby. There is biking and hiking as well. The elevator was a bonus for the end of a tiring day. Ellen answered all my questions beforehand with patience and good info. The local manager is easy to reach and super helpful if you have any issues (like providing an escort if you insist on getting lost on your way here...hehe). My husband and I were comfortable every minute. If I ever come to Provence again, I will stay LONGER here!

This apartment has everything we wanted and much more! Compact but beautifully furnished with all mod cons, parking, an elevator, a magnificent view overlooking the river and ancient part of town. A few minutes walk to the Tuesday market, restaurants, newsstand and best of all fresh croissants and baguettes. The Sullivans are delightful, interesting and well travelled; the apt reflects this with a well stocked collection of guides and books, and a tiny but unusually well equipped kitchen! We can't wait to get back!

A wonderful holiday apartment. It was everything we hoped it would be

The first thing to say is the Sullivans are very good indeed at doing everything they can to make your stay a good one. At the booking stage they are very quick to reply to any emails you send them and very good at dealing fully with any queries. They send lots of useful advance information and, once you reach the flat you find they have left a file full of very clear, concise information on everything you need to know on the flat and it's appliances and on Vaison and it's surroundings. The flat itself is a delight. It is perfect for two people. The position is superb, looking out at the old city and close to everything in the newer part. Above all, the balcony is terrific. Though physically quite small, there is space to sit out at the small table and enjoy the cool of the evening and the wonderful views of the old city and the mountains in the distance. We cannot recommend this apartment too highly. I can't imagine anyone being dissatisfied with it. It was great.

Terrific apartment

My husband and I spent a week in this clean, comfortable, and well-equipped apartment and thoroughly enjoyed it. The apartment is just great--it is loaded with storage space and has a fabulous view over the medieval village--we just loved sitting on the balcony and gazing out as we ate our morning croissants or sipped our wine or cocktails. The apartment enjoys great air circulation, so we were never hot. Vaison is lovely and is very conveniently located for excursions to wine villages and lavender fields and much more. A trip to the Nyons area in the Drome is a must during lavender season. We would not hesitate to recommend this apartment to a couple who wants to enjoy a Provence experience, and we would love to return. And many thanks to the owners for all the great information and long phone conversation.

The apartment's location puts it within a 5-15 minute walk of all in-town amenities: grocery stores, bakeries, wine shops, restaurants and other shopping. Summer cultural offerings include a full schedule of music, dance and theater at the updated Roman amphitheater. You can walk easily to the community swimming pool and tennis club or play boule on the local court. Many more activities are available in the surrounding area.
