We are sure you will enjoy the ever changing tidal riverscape from this private vacation spot as we have for the past 20 years. This rental is located on Barters Island, a 10 minute drive from Boothbay Harbor.
The open floor plan provides wide water views from the kitchen, living and dining areas as well as the deck. There is a queen bed in ground floor master bedroom and an easy access shower in its bathroom. One upstairs bedroom has a double bed and the other has 2 twin beds. There is a full bathroom upstairs. There is an extra twin mattress in upstairs closet that can be used in any of the bedrooms to sleep a 7th person.
We find this to be an ideal location for enjoying the pleasures of mid-coast Maine.
This house has been in the family since 1990 and we have been enjoying it immensely ever since. We value the peacefulness of the location as well as the availability of walks, concerts, boating, public library with its locally famous used bookstore and many, many other activities. When our children were young we all enjoyed the local Railway Village with train rides, animals and an antique car museum. We have also loved exploring other beautiful towns and state parks along the Maine coast and inland from this home base including; Bradford State Park (walking trails and mountain biking available) and Reid State Park (on the ocean with beach and a large 'tidal' pool that is great for small children.) Inland we have visited Moosehead Lake and the surrounding area; explored the paper company roads and canoed down a stretch of the Penobscot River.
Our second vacation in your lovely Maine home was even better than the one last year -- except that we should have stayed longer! There are so many things to do nearby that it was hard to fit them all into two weeks.
We also enjoy just relaxing on the large deck, gazing out at the water and the birds or watching the full moon rise over the river.
Having the Botanical Gardens within a mile is great - we enjoy the gardens as well as the kayak trips that are run from their location. Porters Preserve, Gregory Preserve and Oven Mouth are our favorite hiking areas nearby. My husband loves bicycling down River Road and over to Southport and we both like to drive down to enjoy lunch or dinner overlooking Townsend Gut at Robinson's Wharf.
We entertained friends at your house this summer - both for a barbeque and a lobster dinner. Purchased the lobsters at nearby Trevett Store. Your kitchen is so well equipped, entertaining was a pleasure. We also enjoy the huge and interesting selection of books that fill your house.
We are looking forward to another, longer, stay next summer.
Me, my boyfriend & our two dogs really enjoyed our time here! We spent each day hiking the local land trust trails-there were so many that we sometimes hiked two per day & we never repeated a trail! The trails & views were gorgeous. We took a few day trips to neighboring towns & never traveled more than 60 minutes. Reed State Park was worth the 60 minute drive with bike trails & two gorgeous beaches. We rented kayaks in Southport & rode out to an island. So much fun. We are outdoor enthusiasts & we found that we had a lot to do in Boothbay & Barters Island. I really appreciate the kind owners who were 100% supportive of our having a wonderful time in their home. Also, the home was well kept, comfortable & felt secluded being the last home on a dead-end street. It was perfect for me & the dogs! I would recommend anyone stay here as it was really awesome.
We spent an idyllic week at your charming home on Barters Island. What a lovely spot to relax and recharge. At the end of a winding land on the water in Maine, it doesn't get better than that.
We were a multigeneration group with great-grandparents, my husband and I, our daughter, husband and toddlers! Everyone was comfortable and there was plenty of space throughout for all our activities. The open space of the living area allowed for family meals and reading or play space. The full deck doubled that space. I can't count how many times we lined our chairs up on the deck to watch the children play while the lobster boats made their rounds in the cove. The cottage is also close to everything you might want to visit...the Botanical Gardens, lakeside swimming, ocean beaches, lobster restaurants, the Boothbay train, downtown Boothbay with its trolley ride, and the Aquarium all within a few miles.
We also spent many evenings walking on Barters Island's beautiful quiet roads... sometimes rambling and sometimes going to the Trevett Country Store for something, like yummy pizza.
Of course the house and is stocked with all the kitchen amenities to cook in so we did that, too. The variety of thoughtful supplies, from sugar and spice to coffee filters, paper towels and the like made the experience extra relaxing.
We can't wait to go back next summer.
I almost forgot to mention...the hand turned bridge just steps from the lane really makes it feel like a place beyond time...you just cross the bridge and you are there.
My husband and I and another couple had a wonderful time at your house in Boothbay last week. It was so great walking in the front door and looking right thru to the deck and the water beyond, what an intro. Your house was perfect for us, and we loved the location. I’m an early riser, so every morning I walked down Barter’s Island Rd over the two bridges, and out Knickerkane park. The early morning mist rising over the water where sailboats and lobster boats were moored made beautiful photo ops. I think I took more pictures in the neighborhood than I did throughout the the rest of our explorations.
We explored the Boothbay region itself (highlights being the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, and a sunset cruise on the schooner Eastwind), Freeport (L.L.Bean), Bath (Maine Maritime Museum), Rockland (Farnsworth Art Museum, Puffin Visitor Center, and the Breakwater Lighthouse), and Camden. Your house was well situated for all those places and we took advantage of that.
Thanks for sharing your lovely home with us.
We stayed here and had a very relaxing time. This house is located right on the water, on a seluded lot. It is a very quite neighborhood and felt further from things than it actually was. There is plenty to do only minutes away. There are several public walking trails as well as the botanical gardens which also has walking trails and a great childrens area. The town of Boothbay Harbor is close and has a lot of interesting little shops. If you relax by getting away from it all and staying by yourself or by going out and finding new things to do this is a great location for you. The house has an open layout that is great for socializing. Every common space has a great view of the water and fireplace. I found watching both at the same time with my morning coffee extremely relaxing.
Our week this year in the Barter's Island house was wonderful. Fabulous location, and as much, or as little, as you could ask for. House layout is the best we've encountered while coming to the Boothbay region over the past several years. Kitchen has more than you'll ever need. And the breezes coming through the back doors and windows were amazing! Ceiling fans to cool you down, and a fireplace to warm you up! There's even a piano in the huge living room for those who have the talent. Rooms are clean, and pretty spacious. It's an easy ride to most attractions - Botanical Gardens and the Aquarium are 2 we liked. We were greeted with a bushel of our favorite Maine apples, and a little jar of Maine Syrup. Watching tides come and go from the porch was so peaceful for us. Homeowners Beverly and Mark, have invested a lot of time and research putting together a catalog of activities in and around the area. There are tons of books throughout the house with all kinds of historical information, fiction, non-fiction, poetry, history and suggestions from previous renters. The house itself is surrounded by trees, and very private. Would love to see it in the late fall, with all the foliage changes! Yard is big enough for kids to romp in. I didn't see one, but a hammock outside would be wonderful! And did I mention the breezes? We highly recommend a stay here - so many restaurants nearby! Coastal towns, parks, LL Bean is an hour away! I'm sure we'll be back again next year. For us, as seniors, this is an idyllic place. As it is also, for families. Well done, Bev and Mark, well done!
Relaxing at the house and enjoying the everchanging tidal landscape of Back River is one of our favorite activities as well as, of course, lobster eating!! Many great daytrips are available: Camden - has a beautiful harbor and rewarding hike up Mt. Meguntacook, historic Pemaquid Harbor and dramatic Pemaquid Point, Damariscotta, Rockland, Freeport (L.L. Bean), historic Bath - maritime museum, Brunswick (home to Bowdoin College). The Boothbay Region Land Trust Preserves (www.bbrlt.org) are wonderful with numerous walking and water trails throughout the area - Porter Preserve on Barters Island, is a 5 minute drive from the house and offers fabulous views of the Sheepscott River with tidal islands where seals often sun themselves. The Costal Maine Botanical Gardens are nearby as well as the kid friendly Railway Village . There are various boating excursions out of Boothbay Harbor including puffin and whale watching trips, charter fishing trips and visits to Monheagan Island.
