Overview

About the property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Den, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-5)

Fully renovated in 2006, this charming cottage is a short walk from shops, restaurants, the ocean, Acadia National Park's hiking trails and carriage roads. Set back from a quiet residential street, the cottage nestles behind a picket fence and cottage garden full of flowers.

Start your day sipping coffee or tea in the sunny south-facing kitchen with warm wooden cabinets and floors, and granite countertops. End your day of exploring in the cozy living room or in the front garden. Or go upstairs and sit on the private 'tree house' balcony off the master bedroom, sipping wine and watching the evening descend while enjoying the cool breezes that often sweep in off the ocean in the late afternoon.

This adorable, unique home features fun cottage colors and stained glass windows in the kitchen and upstairs twin bedroom. A cathedral ceiling, fan, and air conditioner in the master bedroom will keep you comfortable even on the warmest nights. Lay in bed at night on professionally laundered linens and view stars through the skylight.

Our cottage sleeps four but can sleep six with the addition of the futon in the downstairs sitting room/den. Downstairs you will find an open floor plan with an entryway, a large eat-in kitchen, living room with a chimney made of local granite, sitting room/den and full bath. Upstairs is the master bedroom with queen bed and private balcony, a bedroom with twin beds, and a full bath with stained glass mirror, shower and clawfoot tub.

You need never worry about finding a parking place in Bar Harbor! From our peaceful cottage you will have just a short walk (10 minutes or less) to all the attractions of downtown: restaurants, cafes, movie theater, ice cream shops, art galleries, the Abbe Museum, etc. From the nearby Village Green you can access the Island Explorer bus system and travel for free all over Mount Desert Island. A short walk in the other direction brings you to the lower terminus of Bar Harbor's historic and scenic Shore Path. You can also walk from our cottage to the Great Meadow Loop Village Connector Trail into Acadia National Park and visit Sieur de Monts Spring and the Wild Gardens of Acadia, or access trails to Dorr Mtn, Cadillac Mtn, Kebo Mtn, and Champlain Mtn. On Sunday mornings you can walk two blocks to the wonderful Farmer's Market in the YMCA parking lot, where you can purchase fresh produce, local cheese and dairy products, baked goods, and other delicious local treats.

We love our dog and welcome your well behaved canine companion into our home. Bar Harbor is a dog friendly town; however dogs do need to be leashed and cleaned up after. Some shops will even offer your canine companion a treat. We would be happy to share some places to go with your dog where you can both run free.

The spectacular scenery of Mount Desert Island will leave you breathless. Opportunities for hiking, biking, kayaking and just plain exploring abound. When you book your stay we will be glad to share some of our favorite places on this island with you.

About The Owner

We are both retired, from careers in hospital nursing and speech/language pathology in the public schools. Our three children are grown and all live in different parts of Maine. We share our home with one dog and two cats.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 1997

Why The Owner chose Mount Desert Island

We originally bought our Bar Harbor home to provide housing for our daughter, who was attending College of the Atlantic in 1997. (We've been coming to Bar Harbor since the 1970's). We love the area so much, we decided to retire down here.

What makes this cottage unique

We love the proximity of so many wonderful places from our cottage. A favorite morning ritual is taking our dog for a walk, stopping at the local market to get a cup of coffee, and then continuing to the Shore Path, where we sit on some rocks overlooking Frenchman's Bay and enjoy the amazing view while sipping our coffee. It's a great way to start a summer day!

Wonderful stay in Bar Harbor/Acadia!

  • 5 of 5

Darling, comfortable cottage within a 5 minute walk to heart of Bar Harbor. Extremely clean and all the amenities of home. The owners were extremely hospitable and quick to respond to any of my email questions. They provided a binder with a wealth of information about the area to help get us going in the right direction and eating at some favorite spots. Very friendly and helpful neighbors, too!

Loved the lounge chairs on the upstairs balcony--great place for an afternoon nap after a morning of hiking! It was nice to have the use of a washer and dryer, too, as we had already been traveling for a week prior to our visit here.

Our main reason for visiting was to see Acadia National Park. A 5 minute walk to the free national park shuttle bus could get you anywhere you'd like to go within Acadia. One day, we began our hiking from the house on the Great Meadow Loop to Jesup Path to Sieur de Monts. Our location was perfect!

We would definitely stay here, again, with our family of 4. Thanks so much, Sharon and Enoch!!

Fabulous family friendly cottage

  • 5 of 5

This cottage was perfect for our family of 5 (mom and 4 young adult/teenage children). There were just enough beds for us and the two bathrooms were a great perk. The cottage was not too big so the teenagers could not hibernate for too long, making family time easy to achieve. Everything in Bar Harbor is within walking distance from this cottage and driving to different parts of Acadia National park was easy. Additionally, bus transportation from a park near the cottage to different parts of Acadia was free and could accommodate bikes.

The cottage was clean and very cute. The hosts have stocked their cottage with cookware, towels, bed linens, a gas grill was available, and although we did not need it, there are air conditioners in the master bedroom and the living room. The kitchen is modern with a dishwasher to boot. The master bed was comfortable. My favorite part though was a small deck off of the master bedroom that was private (neighbors could not see onto the deck). I loved going out to the deck to relax after a day of hiking and sitting on a lounge chair with a cold beverage.

I would definitely recommend this cottage for couples, families, or a girls trip. I hope to visit Acadia with my husband in the future (he was not able to get away from work for this trip due to a previous fishing trip he took with his son). When I do return, I will definitely see if Sharon and Enoch are still renting their cottage.

Cozy, convenient, home-away-from-home!

  • 5 of 5

This was a perfect place to call home for our week in Bar Harbor! It was convenient to absolutely everything - easy to walk to downtown or drive to anywhere on the island. We were lucky enough to be there over the 4th of July and had so much fun walking just down the street to all the festivities - Pancake Breakfast, Craft Fair, Parade, and more! The cottage itself was the perfect size for our family of four (children ages 2 and 5), and could have even comfortably fit more. It has an open and roomy feel, and the updated kitchen and bathroom on the first floor were wonderful. The owners, Enoch and Sharon, were very responsive and incredibly helpful - as were their neighbors! We hope to return here again some day and highly recommend this home to anyone looking for a place to stay on the island.

Lovely cottage, convenient to everything

  • 5 of 5

My husband and 21-year-son and I rented this adorable cottage for the last week in August and had a wonderful time! All the Bar Harbor restaurants and shops are within walking distance, but it was easy to hop in the car and go to Acadia without driving through downtown. The home was spotless, charming, and comfy. Just as important, the owners are friendly and responsive. Can't wait to go back!

Comfortable, Clean, Convenient and Charming Cottage

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed in this lovely cottage for one week and were extremely happy with everything it provided. Everything we needed was there, all we had to provide was food! It is obvious that the owners have put a lot of time and thought into making sure the cottage is a 'home away from home' for whomever stays there. The cottage was extremely clean and we loved the charm of it too with the sloping floors and walls and especially enjoyed the beautiful flowers in the front, it truly is a cottage garden. We loved the convenience of it, being able to walk into town and enjoy the many restaurants and shops that Bar Harbor has to offer and it is only a few minutes drive from the Park with its beauty and trails, carriage roads, and so much more. The owners provided a binder with wonderful information including instructions on appliances etc. in the cottage, recommendations for Restaurants, Hikes, places of interest etc. We enjoyed an amazing dinner at McKays and also a scrumptious breakfast at Side Street Cafe, both of which were recommended. It was nice being able to eat at the cottage and one night we cooked mussels which we collected at Pretty Marsh beach and enjoyed them with a bottle of wine that was left for us as a gift by the owners. This is our fourth visit to Mount Desert Island and we love it more each time we return. There is so much to see and do whether it be in town, the Park or the quiet side of the Island which we love exploring. Of all the places we have stayed over the years, this cottage is truly our favorite and we would definitely stay there again.

Lovely cottage, great location!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I with our two boys (ages 15 and 13) stayed in this cottage for a week and loved it! None of us wanted to leave! The cottage is very clean, charming, and quaint. It is clear that the owners take pride in their home. We really appreciated their personalized binder (filled with helpful instructions and suggestions) and the many guide books they provided to enhance our vacation. We enjoyed restaurants they recommended, Cafe This Way and The Side Street Cafe, and when we didn't want to head out to eat we found the kitchen to be well-stocked with quality dishes, glassware, and cookware. One of my favorite spots in the cottage was the balcony off of the master bedroom. After a morning of hiking, I always found it to be such a relaxing spot. I almost felt like a kid in a tree house! The cottage is in a great location. The neighborhood is quiet and peaceful and the neighbors are just as friendly and nice as can be. From the cottage, it is just an easy walk to the shops and restaurants. Additionally, the cottage is on the southern end of town making it is easy to get to multiple Acadia Park entrances to see some of the best sights the park has to offer (Cadillac Mountain, Great Head Trail, Thunder Hole, etc.). While writing this review, I think it is important to note that this is a very, charming old cottage, but please know that brings some characteristics with it. Not all of the floors are level and the staircase is narrow and not level too. While that only enhanced the charm for us, those with physical limitations might want to be informed ahead of time. We can't wait to return to this cottage and Bar Harbor! For us it truly was a wonderful place to be!
