Overview

About the property

Lodge, 4 Bedrooms + Bunk Area, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 10)

Return to an era of simplicity and understatement on Lake Waukewan. Originally built in the 1940’s as a simple lakeside cabin, the Lakehouse has expanded over the years yet still retains the charm of its earlier days.

The original cabin is now a living room with comfortable chairs and large sofa for reading, watching favorite movies, working on a jigsaw puzzle or enjoying views of the lake from every window.

Fishing, canoeing, motor-boating, water-skiing and swimming are at your doorstep in spring, summer and fall. Waukewan Golf Course welcomes summer visitors to its course and 19th Hole. Winter brings cross-country and downhill skiing; Gunstock and Ragged Mountains are both close by, snowshoeing, sleigh rides through historic Meredith Village, and ice skating.

Loons gather in our protected cove on this hidden jewel in the lakes region. Lake Waukewan is a bit of a secret, and the residents prefer it that way. Not that Big Lake excitement is too far - Lake Waukewan rushes down the Mill Falls into Lake Winnipesaukee, just seven minutes down the road by car.

if you’d rather enjoy the lake at a more leisurely pace, you may choose to rent a kayak or canoe and row across the lake to Waukewan Beach, from which you may stroll into town for an ice-cream cone at Town Docks. Upon your return, you might just see fireworks overhead; or maybe it’s just the stars lighting your way back.

Keywords: Roomy three level contemporary waterfront in a protected cove. This updated home has a large open concept kitchen/dining/living area overlooking the water, plus five bedrooms and three bathrooms. There are three bedrooms on the main floor; one with a queen bed, another with a set of twin bunks, and a third with two twin beds and a queen bed. A master suite on the second level has a king bed, and twin, and the fifth bedroom, also upstairs, has a queen. A large deck overlooks the trees and lake. The naturally landscaped yard leads to a small perched beach and two steps into the sandy-bottomed water. *Kayaking, boating, swimming at your doorstep. We have a swim platform for your use.

About Laura Gallagher Byrne

We are an active family with pets. We love the lake in all seasons, and discover something new with each visit. The Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is one of our favorite places, at any time of year.

Laura Gallagher Byrne purchased this lodge in 2002

Why Laura Gallagher Byrne chose Meredith

When we were first married, we visited friends staying on Lake Wentworth in Wolfeboro, NH, and we fell in love with the area. My husband grew up vacationing in the Adirondacks, and the Lakes Region was reminiscent of those times he spent on the lake with his family.

What makes this lodge unique

We thought we wanted a house on the Big Lake, but once we saw Waukewan, we knew it was the spot for us. We love our protected cove for swimming, and the tranquility of a smaller lake make kayaking and canoeing a joy. 'You will grow to love this lake,' one of our neighbors commented to us. And we have.

We loved the house! There were 7 adults and 2 children and never once felt crowded!

  • 5 of 5

This home was perfect for all of us! The living room area was very cozy yet roomy enough for all of us to gather. The kitchen was very large and loved having such a large dining table where all of us could sit comfortably! The back deck was beautiful and enjoyed reading and listening to music. The lake area was perfect and loved swimming out to the raft. Thank you so much and can't wait to return!😁

Beautiful location, property not what we expected

  • 2 of 5

There are many good reviews and apparently repeat guests, but for us the house was not what we expected. If it would have been described more accurately we would not have rented it.

Lake Waukewan is a beautiful lake. The house has a great dock and floating dock. We brought 6 single kayaks and a double canoe as the owners did not allow us to use theirs (and we knew this in advance). Renting one for a week costs about the same as buying one. There is a large, fairly new deck with 5 adirondack chairs. The kitchen is big and open concept dining and living room were really nice. The upstairs king room is huge and has an attached bath that is shared with the hall.

Other than the upstairs King room, there are no lake views from the house or deck. There are saplings growing all along their water frontage except the small space where you access the dock. When sitting on the deck and from the house, you can tell there is a lake on the other side of the trees, but you have no view of it. The area by the dock is small and has a charcoal grill and large picnic table. The picnic table is old, warped and broken and sinking into the ground and no adult could sit at it. We brought 10 beach chairs to sit by the lake during the day and never took them out of the car as there is nowhere to set them up. We would've loved a gas grill on the deck as we found the charcoal grill to be too far from the house for our liking and inconvenient for grilling, so we only grilled one night. We were told (even after an email to confirm so I would bring the correct sized sheets), that there was a King, 3 queens and a twin bunk (as well as 3 more twins spread throughout the rooms). In fact there is one queen and two full. We are a tall family and do not fit in double/full sized beds. Also note room on the main floor with a full bed is only accessed by walking through the bunk room. The third bathroom is in the basement with the laundry. No bedrooms are down there so it was inconvenient and not used by us. The tv (computer monitor?) is very small and we could not get the sound loud enough to hear so had to turn on subtitles to watch movies. The stroll into town for ice-cream is 5 miles round trip.

There was a strong smell of mold when we arrived that the owners are likely taking care of, but we had to empty a dehumidifier 2-3 times a day. We also had a bat fly around one of the bedrooms two nights because of a large hole in the wall. We plugged the hole with pillows and towels.

Owner's Response: Dear Guest, We are glad you enjoyed many aspects of the lake, and thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. We love our lake views from the deck and house, which, due to our house location - three steps from the lake, are vast and available from every room. Our beach area is as depicted in the cover photo. Thank you for mentioning the stroll to town, which, as described, is from the town dock once you kayak or boat over - we will be sure to make the wording more clear. We have a 49 inch Roku TV in the living area, along with lots of comfy seating. We have never had a bat problem in our home, nor is there a hole in the wall; it is a space where the orginal post and beam ends and new wall begins. We have had our home inspected for both bats and mold, and neither are in evidence. Both my husband and I reached out throughout your stay to assist, as did our handyman. Thank you for pointing out the number of repeat guests and positive reviews for our home. It seems our lakehouse was not the best fit for you and your family, however we are happy you feel in love with the lake. Warm regards,

Perfect spot for a summer vacation!

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely and spacious home that my family will *hopefully* return to for years to come. We enjoyed meals on the new deck and large dining table and listening to the loons as we fell asleep at night. The house was clean and had all the indoor amenities we needed. The swimming area perfect for both waders and divers alike, and we loved swimming to the raft and boating around the point. We had kids, teenagers, and young and old couples, and the house never felt crowded. We highly recommend it!

I want to keep this a secret

  • 5 of 5

If I say how much we enjoyed this place it won't be available for us to rent next year.

All of us were so thrilled with the clean and relatively warm water, great dock and raft to swim to. The house is very large, five bedrooms instead of the four listed. A wonderful dining table for all of us board players. Kitchen is huge and very well equipped. The location, so close to lovely Meredith, is excellent. Great walking town. There were tons of activities ;we almost welcomed a rainy day so that we wouldn't mind leaving that peaceful lake. And we did hear the loons sing. How thrilling! Good restaurants near by. I miss it already.

Our lakehouse community consists of families like ours who value the tranquility and quiet, natural setting of Lake Waukewan. Guests who enjoy listing to the sounds of loons, catching a fish (or not!) off our dock, and a relaxing swim in the lake will appreciate this warm summer community. Parents will enjoy the quiet cove and our swim platform, and children will enjoy the resident bullfrogs who appear occasionally on our beach. The lakehouse is not a party house; rather, it is a place to connect with loved ones and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
