Relax and enjoy the charm of a true fishing village life in quaint Cape Porpoise. In the morning, brew your own, or get your coffee (and freshly baked muffin) from the Wayfarer restaurant, Cape Porpoise Kitchen or Bradbury's market--all less than 4 blocks away! Sit on your private back yard deck knowing your children and/or dog(s) are safely enclosed and--best of all--are with you on vacation! Walk to the village for groceries, and enjoy dining and drinks at several close--walking distance restaurants--no designated driver needed!

See the tide coming in and going out in many spots in the village and across the street. Drive by Walker's point--summer home to the Bush family. 'One town--two President's'. Take a short drive to Goose Rock's beach and enjoy the soft sand and tidal pools; or go into the Kennebunk beaches--there are several and on the way home stop at one of the many local and friendly bars for a cold one. If shopping calls you, you will enjoy the many unique boutiques of Dock Square or you can drive south to adorable Ogunguit. If serious shopping is your thing--you will be compelled to head North 35 miles to the outlets of Freeport, Maine--and the infamous LL Bean which is open 24 hour a day, 365 days a year!. Or continue South after Ogunquit and hit up the Kittery outlet malls--rated one of the best outlet malls in the US! and of course, Portland, Maine--often called the 'mini Boston' is only 25 miles South. From Portland you can a ferry to Peak's island for the day...or if you really want to rove you can take the ferry from Portland to Nova Scotia.

Or launch your kayak or small boat within a mile of the rental property and enjoy a day exploring the Islands around Cape Porpoise Harbor. Or walk to back shore during low tide and collect sea shells and sand dollars. You can--of course--get your fishing and/or clamming license and go all native.

If theater is your thing--check out the Ogunguit Playhouse which attracts excellent summer stock. It is a large gracious summer theatre. Local theaters include Arundel Playhouse which is 10 minutes away,

Or go to the police dept--just a mile away--and get a permit for a bonfire on the beach--great fun for everyone. Don't forget the S'mores and remember the dogs must be leashed while on the beach (they are allowed after 6 o'clock pm). Or just relax on your back deck and grill those marshmallows on your gas grill while the family enjoys the large back yard. Or if the weather doesn't permit, enjoy a movie on your Blue Ray/DVD player while the rest of the family plays cards or monopoly at the game table. If all of this is too much--escape to the sitting room and read a good book away from the fray.

About Deborah Davis

We are now fortunate enough to be permanent residents of Cape Porpoise--in fact, we live less than a mile away from our rental property. We are now both retired and are adult children are out on their own but we first experienced Cape Porpoise through renting years ago! We fell in love and eventually moved here. We have enjoyed renovating 24 Mills Road for vacationers and we are very happy to share the 'cape porpoise' experience.

We are allergic to cats but total 'dog lovers'. We lost our Golden Retriever last year but we still have a jack russel terrier (total pip!) a shitzu and Brussel's Griffon mix--with a face only a mother could love'. we have gone--and continue to go--to most of the local restaurants and stores, and are happy to share our experiences. We will leave all of the local menus in the rental unit, along with some coupons and specials that are unique to us and this property because we know so many of the local restauranteurs, shop keepers, etc. Our goal is to hope our vacationers have a restful and memorable time.

Our family vacationed in Cape Porpoise for several years before we bought a small camp on Fisher's Lane. We accidentally 'fell upon' Cape Porpoise one year when our kids were babies and we were lost in the rain. As our family and needs grew we sold the camp and built a home about a half mile away. Both of our children worked at the local restaurants all through high school and college. We acquired 24 Mills Road 2 years ago but we were not able to begin renovations until this year so this is our first summer offering it for rental.

What makes this house unique

You can walk to some of the most famous and fabulous Maine restaurants. Cape Porpoise and Kennebunkport are very quaint little towns, with lots of shops, restaurants, and activities. And Portland is only 25 minutes North, Boston is 90 minutes South and the location is ideal.

One story home. Additional wash room/bathroom off of kitchen. Laundry room. Great room has cathedral ceiling, sectional seating, game table, Tv and lots of storage. Additional sitting room with queen size sofa sleeper. Very large fenced back yard with children's area and play set. less than 2 miles to Goose Rock's Beach. Walking distance ( less than a quarter of a mile) to the hamlet of Cape Porpoise and its many restaurants, library, Bradbury's market, beautiful white fenced harbor and lovely walk to the Pier and Goat Island Light. Public kayak launch less than a mile away on Pier Road. Public boat launch on Agamenticus road within a half mile. Public walking accesses to back shore islands etc in several locations within a half mile.

This was our second visit this year. Obviously, we liked it and enjoyed this rental. Conveniently located, very clean and comfortable. Excellent back yard for our dogs. Definitely recommend it.

Very good

The moment we walked in we knew it was like home away from home. It was very clean and comfortable. The area was excellent, close to places for eating in or eating out. The backyard was ideal for our two dogs and the deck for us to watch them. The location was nicely situated for visits north or south. We loved it! Thank you for being dog friendly.

From the time we arrived, the home was inviting. A great backyard for my two grandchildren and the pup. Nice deck for watching the action in the yard. And this house was close to everything - a great market within walking distance for last minute items, the great Cape Porpoise kitchen to pick up lunch or dinner on the go. And close to Freeport as well as Portland for day trips. But, all in all, we spent the best time in Kennebunkport, wonderful restaurants and shops, and the best scenery. I will try to return next August.

Owner's Response: So happy when my guests make the best of the local area---so much to see and do very close to the house. And the ability to walk to town is always a plus. Also nice to know that guests find the house relaxing and comfortable....that is what we aim for--that is what a cottage near the water should be all about.

Good news and bad news

We just completed our week's stay at the 24 Mills Road property in Cape Porpoise. The good news is that it's walking distance to the small town of Cape Porpoise and a quick car ride to Goose Rocks Beach and Kennebunk. The back porch and yard are wonderful and the owner's husband, Bob, was very helpful setting us up with their kayaks and bringing them down to and back from the put-in location. The owner was very responsive by email. The bad news is that for the price, I expected a bit more - maybe a water view, some extra bar soap, toilet paper and light bulbs and air conditioning. The house is quite outdated with multiple non-working electrical outlets and light bulbs. The house, as others have noted, is quite dark inside and the addition of lamps that throw a lot of light (instead of desk/side table lamps) would be helpful. A short note to new renters would have been welcoming, appreciated and helpful - outline locations of important items in the house, what switches work what (not intuitively obvious), tips for how to access the kayaks, suggestions for good places to go, etc. It was particularly upsetting to the kids that one night the fire alarm went off at 3:45 am and stayed on for 10 minutes. We were close to calling the fire department after trying Bob on his cell. Apparently, this happens on a not infrequent basis (due to summer weather conditions) - a warning would have been helpful. What would have been more helpful is if the alarm had been placed in or moved to a different location to begin with, knowing that this might happen.

Owner's Response: It is always very helpful to get feedback about what could be improved in your vacation home. I have 4 rental homes and yet, I am constantly learning and trying to improve. However, it is very disappointing when someone doesn't present accurate facts..not only is it not helpful to future renters it isn't constructive for me. Let me give some examples with accurate facts: This tenant states that I didn't explain how how to access the kayaks". There are NO kayaks at the house nor do I advertise such anywhere on this site!! Since I was going to be out of town for a few days, I kindly offered to lend MY 3 personal kayaks and all the equipment to this tenant when she asked where to rent them!!! I told her specifically that they were at my house but I can only assume she didn't want to drive or walk the half mile to my house to launch them so she called my husband to load them up and bring them to her--which he kindly did!! This was above and beyond the rental! This tenant comments that the house is dark. Fact: part of the house is darker but we do not have air conditioning so we keep the large shade trees which most folks love. As for listing or providing places to go, etc, clearly this tenant didn't read ANY of the information I painstakingly provided on this very site! I list dozens of restaurants, sites to see, beaches, parks etc. If you are reading this review you can see for yourself! As for the fire alarm--it went off ONCE and it is something that happens - as I specifically explained to her - when it gets very hot and humid in our town which is on the harbor. This house is right across from the marshes. I told her this happens a COUPLE times a year when it is both very hot and very dense..moving the alarm would not help as we explained to her because it is the weather. She also asked asked us to take out the batteries! This is a violation of code! And ours are the new hard wired kind for safety purposes. As for the price--I am completely booked every summer --I let The market drive the price.

Wonderful vacation

We had a wonderful family vacation the home was very comfortable, nicely decorated and very very clean!! Having the fenced in yard was perfect for our dogs, the location was great, we loved Goose Rocks Beach and the sunset at The Ramp bar !!! Can't wait to come back.

Our property sits on almost acre of land walking distance to the center of Cape Porpoise. It sits back far from the road and has a large fenced in backer for your two and four legged 'kids'. The house is a 3 mile drive to Goose Rocks beach; two miles to Dock Square, Kennebukport and walking distance to all that Cape Porpoise offers, including Kitchen Chicks, The Wayfarer, Nunan's and The Captains restaurants downtown and Pier 77, the Ramp and the Chowder house across from Goat Island light. There is a kayak launch less than a mile away (you have to follow the tides unless you want to camp out on one of the 11 Islands surrounding Cape Porpoise!). Bicycling is popular, and although the water is never that warm, surfing and snorkeling and paddle boarding.
