The perfect cozy, waterfront get-away, Chuckanut Bay Hideaway! CBH, is a recently converted modern cottage style studio on world famous Chuckanut Bay. Sit back and watch the eagles, sea birds, seals, boats and spectacular sunsets from this very private and comfortable hideaway. 3 miles south of the historic Fairhaven district of Bellingham, WA, 75 minutes from Vancouver, 90 minutes from Seattle. Perfect for a weekend get-away any time of year. (WWU parents: build in a mini-vacation to your next visit - come see your student and spoil yourself at the same time!!)
It's called the HideAway for a reason. Private, quiet and secluded - yet very close to shops, restaurants and grocery stores.
The 550 sq ft HideAway is nestled in the trees on a level patch of cliff, offering a commanding view of Chuckanut Bay, Lummi Island and mature gardens. Garage parking with inside stairs make access easy and dry. The hideaway is a newly (completed in Jan 2012) converted space with open beam ceiling, hardwood floors, gas fireplace-stove, 42” HD LCD TV with cable, wifi, BluRay, cotton linens, leather couch, large tile shower, heated tile bathroom floor, microwave, refrigerator, plates, glasses, toaster, coffee maker, tea kettle, cutlery. (Sorry NO OVEN OR COOK TOP/BURNERS. If you need to cook this is NOT the place for you.)
Because of its cliff-side location, there are 14 stairs to be navigated to get from the garage area. The train tracks run below the property, and the occasional rumble sound of the trains rolling by provide a wonderful background.
The HideAway is ideal for 2 people only.
The HideAway has a small covered porch which is perfect for enjoying morning coffee or evening cocktails while watching fabulous sunsets. You can also relax in the sun (weather permitting) on the lawn chairs in the garden area.
The Hideaway is located on world famous Chuckanut Drive, a 20 mile long two-lane road constructed in 1896 was designated a State Scenic Recreational Highway in 1993. In places Chuckanut Drive literally hangs off the side of Chuckanut Mountain with spectacular salt water views. There are plenty of hiking, biking trails nearby. Head north on the old Interurban Trail and go to Fairhaven and downtown Bellingham or head south to Larabee State Park, Clayton beach and Skagit Valley. Picturesque towns like La Conner, Fairhaven and Edison are easily within reach with their art galleries, shops and restaurants. Enjoy gourmet cuisine minutes away at The Oyster Bar or the Rhododendron Cafe. Taylor Shellfish Farm is just down the road and has oysters, clams, mussels, crab and prawns mostly farmed and caught locally daily. Also within easy reach are the Washington State and British Columbia ferries, Whale watching tours, boating and kayaking, Winter skiing and boarding at Mt. Baker ski area, and the Skagit Valley, with it’s Tulip Festival in April and berries and fresh organic produce all summer.
Reminder: NO OVEN OR COOK TOP/BURNERS. If you need to cook this is NOT the place for you.

I was a builder, woodworker before I began a career in software. I rput the tool belt back on to transform my woodshop into the Chuckanut Bay HideAway. I live alone in the main house on the property. I am often out of town but have a local support person when I am gone. I enjoy traveling and meeting other travels. I can help with questions and suggestions but I respect the privacy of my guests and will let you take the lead on your desired level of interaction. ~ H.F.

one word, The View.... ok two words #milliondollarview
Chuckanut Bay Hide Away is the perfect spot to do just that. It's very quiet, private, and the breathtaking views are just like in the pictures, including an amazing sunset. Accommodations are limited to 2 guests, making it a perfect spot for a romantic weekend. The location, being close to Fairhaven and Bellingham for shopping and dining, as well as Chuckanut Mountain and Larabee State Park for outdoor adventure, is ideal. The owner, Howard, was very gracious and helpful, without being intrusive. There was a full notebook with local information, as well as small touches like a reuseable shopping bag with frequent shopper cards from nearby grocery stores. The lack of a full kitchen might deter some, but for myself I'm not interested in cooking while on vacation. There are far too many great restaurants to try out in town. A coffee pot, corkscrew, fridge, and microwave more than meet my needs.
A few things to be aware of: Trains do pass very close to the property, which did wake me up a couple of times at night. Personally this didn't bother me at all, I found it kind of charming. It was also somewhat difficult to find at first and I'm glad that I made sure to arrive during daylight hours. The directions given were great, it just truly is hidden away. In addition, this would not be a good place for someone who has trouble with stairs, as the access requires walking down a full flight from the garage above.
I would definitely return and recommend this property to others looking for a quiet, private location to get away from it all.
This was our second visit to the Chuckanut Hideaway and it won't be our last! It is the perfect blend of quiet and peaceful while being close to the city of Bellingham for great restaurants, parks and shopping. The Hideaway is cozy, clean and modern with spectacular views of Chuckanut Bay. Although it is a studio, there is plenty of room - comfortable bed, large modern bathroom (complete with a porthole to capture the views) and great furniture on which to spend the afternoon reading and relaxing. Although the kitchen has no oven or stovetop it is well stocked and convenient for preparing light meals and/or snacks. Fairhaven restaurants and coffee shops are just a short drive down the road for larger meals. The small porch is the perfect spot for coffee in the morning or wine in the evening while watching the sunset. So sorry we missed you again this year, Howard!
The fact that we are writing this review 3 weeks after our stay, and still telling our friends about that weekend experience should say enough right there. But let's do the pros and cons!
- The view. Simply spectacular. Sometimes we just sat on the deck and stared out.
- We've had many great experiences renting vacation homes on VRBO. We've been pretty lucky in fact. But this is the first one where we for-sure will be going back to this very cottage for another weekend. Hopefully soon.
- Howard has it all dialed in. From the minute we reserved the cottage to our stay there, all the details were very clear on how to get to the cottage, what to do once we arrived, etc. Not a single hassle.
- It seems new and is very clean, as if we were one of the first ones to rent there.
- Loved the huge shower!
- We hadn't had a chance before to explore Bellingham and the surrounding areas, but we definitely had our eyes opened with all the activities right there. The gorgeous Oyster Dome hike just 10 minutes away, kayaking, plenty of restaurants within 15 minutes or so, downtown Fairhaven and Bellingham have plenty to offer, etc. And the town of Edison less than 30 minutes away! (Who knew?!?). So there is plenty to do for days when staying here, but it's also a great spot if you just want to spend hours of quiet time and do nothing.
- Only if we HAVE to come up with something. Yes, although it would be handy to have a full-size oven in the cottage, this did not impact us in any way as we simply planned ahead and Howard had a grill steps outside the door for us to use on one of the nights. There are many takeout options nearby. Plus, the Oyster Bar is minutes down the road and was a terrific dinner experience.
- We're not there RIGHT NOW. :)
This is an updated property with a modern and large bath with a couple -sized shower. The owner accurately described the property. Perfect for two. Very private. There is a garage above to park in so do bring the Porsche or mid-sized SUV. View is gorgeous and hypnotizing. Sunsets are glorious. The owner said a train or two will zip by and they do late at night. A very light sleeper may not like this, but it is disclosed. It is best to come and go in daylight as the road to a hideaway always requires a little bit of Northwest dirt road trekking. As we are pizza makers we were extremely impressed with Fat Pie pizza. Wow! And their bruschetta was ridiculously good. Trust me! Mount Bakery's crescent cinnamon roll was out of this world.
As this rental has only a microwave and mini fridge, which is disclosed, plan your meals by bringing cereal, cold foods, microwavable foods, snacks and/or augmenting with the variety of eateries nearby or in Bellingham. We enjoyed our stay.
We stayed three nights in the studio in early August. Howard made everything easy, from accessing the unit to the return of the security deposit. The studio is well-appointed and clean, and felt like home right away. Howard clearly put a lot of attention into making this rental as comfortable as possible. And the location can't be beat: direct views of the water, secluded without being isolated, and just gorgeous scenery in every direction. I recommend this rental wholeheartedly and can't wait to return!
We were in the middle of a job transition and just needed some time away. We were looking for something quiet and peaceful near the water.
This cottage was perfect. The location is unbelievable - the sunset every day were like something from a movie. We spent each day doing day trips around Bellingham and the San Juans and then came back to the Fairhaven area of Bellingham each evening for great food, making sure we were on our porch each evening to watch the sunset over the water.
The cottage was clean, very well maintained and set up. Wish there were a stove so we could have been a little more self sustained, but that was the only minor nit.
