location was best feature house needs HELP!
We have been going to Hilton Head for over 16 years. We have always stayed in forest beach so we knew we would love this location. However this rental was our least favorite. The property is so terribly overgrown and the "wrap around deck" is so tight that sitting on it is almost impossible and definitely not comfortable at all. The living area is not set up for more than 2 people to comfortably watch tv. The furniture was old and small and uncomfortable. The "remodel" that must have occurred upstairs was done so badly that there are railings attached to the walls where a loft used to be - we are guessing. All the overgrown outside & wasted "wrap around deck" causes this house to be extremely dark inside. The house has a very strong odor of mold and must. So much so that clothing we hung in the closets that we didn't wear had to be washed once we got home to get rid of the smell. The pool was so small, and looks to be needing serious repair and was so tightly closed in with over grown shrubs, that it was not comfortable at all for all 6 of us (remember this house sleeps 12!!!) to sit around & the outdoor furniture is tearing & was dirty. The Jacuzzi is a waste of space since the only way to be able to use it is to pay extra to "heat the pool". It was 98 degrees, why would we ever pay to heat the pool, however we all would have liked using a Jacuzzi in the evenings. The master bedroom/bathroom area had the most musty smell and there was a note on the door upon arrival that carpets had just been cleaned? Closet doors are broken and both sinks in the bathroom do not drain at all and all is in need of update! The TV's is the bedrooms are so ridiculously small and of such horrible quality that from bed the picture looks like an x-ray and is impossible to watch. The kitchen is poorly set up and of very cheep quality and the gas grill set up off the deck by the garbage can storage was not good at all either.
Sorry to sound so negative, but we travel 12 hours, once a year to enjoy our favorite beach and this was by far, our least liked rental.
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts about your stay at 15 Avocet. We would like to address some of the points you mentioned. The wrap around deck, is to provide shade for the home, which is a typical design feature here in the Lowcountry. We feel that we have maximized the space available on the side deck to allow for a couple of chaise lounge chairs, some casual seating, and a table that seats 6 as well. You probably noticed that we installed new string lights and outdoor speakers in the seating area where the large table and chairs are located.
With lot sizes being what they are in most beach oriented vacation spots, there is not always a lot of space for a pool so owners and builders will place as big a pool as possible in the space they have available. While we can't fix the size of the pool however, we do keep up routinely with the bamboo that grows as a privacy barrier between this home and the neighbors. We think it provides a nice atmosphere back by the pool. The bamboo was cut back the week before your arrival as well as all the palm trees being cleaned of all old growth and the lot is maintained weekly. We do have several types of plantings and small trees to fill in the lot as it is located on a corner and we are trying to create a semi-private setting. We appreciate your note regarding a torn chair on the deck and will replace this week.
Regarding the pool heat in order to use the spa, the two are heated separately. When paying for spa heat we program the key pad to heat the spa when you turn it on. The spa takes 30-45 minutes to come to temperature. Once you are done using the spa you turn it off and the heat shuts down. At no time does it heat the pool.
You mentioned a musty smell during your stay as well. We had Microclean Technologies out to the home as part of our routine maintenance during the winter season and all ductwork was cleaned and sealed and new registers installed. You also mentioned the carpets were just cleaned. During our inspection prior to your arrival we noticed some dirt spots from the previous guest so we arranged to get the carpet cleaned for the next arrival (you).
We would love to come up with a new arrangement of the living area that would accommodate more people and will be talking with the owners. The railings you are referring to as being part of a bad “remodel” are a design feature. These are simply a matters of taste/style. Again, Thank you.
The Vacation Company
This was our second stay at this perfectly located home. The bunk bed bedroom was added, as was the new carpet upstairs since our last stay in 2010. The upstairs of the home seems to be in better shape than the downstairs. Everything was clean and adequate when we arrived, but the downstairs is looking a little tired. The main floor bath is in need of an update and some of the furniture is showing wear. We had some issues with an electrical outlet that stopped working in the new bedroom and someone from the management company came over within minutes to address our issue. An electrician was supposed to come over to fix it but never came. The pool and hot tub area was private and relaxing, but there are no pool toys at the home (we did leave some beach toys and noodles in the downstairs bedroom closet!). The absolute best part about this home is the location, directly across the street from Coligny, and a short 2 minute walk from the beach access, and 4 minute walk from Coligny Beach park.
