The property is beautifully situated but I would have appreciated a notice about the "bloody" steep hill leading up to it👍😎. The airconditioning is in dire need of an upgrade as it never made it under 81Fso we had some problems sleeping. All in all an upgrade is needed for the whole house (chairs tables suncovers and so on) for further rentals. Loved the view and the grill as well as the short distance to town?Brgds Kenneth and Birgitta
Don't waste your time or money
My wife and I rented Harbor View for 8 days for our wedding anniversary and I reluctantly have to say I was extremely disappointed. The villa is basically 3 units. The owner's unit on top, the rental in the middle and a small caretaker's quarters below. We were not told up front but there was no greeter for this villa; this was fine with us since we were married in St. John and are familiar with the layout of the island but it should probably be shared with others a little sooner than a week or two before their arrival. The unit itself could use a good cleaning and a few repairs. There was mold on the drywall under the sink (I'm not even sure what that drywall was doing there but after seeing it we just didn't open the cabinets below the sink again) and the wall between the pantry and the bedroom shows water damage at the bottom near the floor and on more than one occasion during the week the rug in the pantry was wet. There is a small window unit air conditioner in the bedroom which has the look of something that has not been cleaned since it was new in 1985 or whenever it was made that you can run all night long and never brings the temp below about 82 degrees. None of these items would have really bothered me that much but on our second night there we came back to the villa and there was a group of people on the upper deck (which happens to be directly above the living area of the rental) who spoke with us and told us they were friends of the owner and were staying the week. We welcomed them and went inside. I don't know how many of them were up there but the sound of chairs or whatever being slid across the floor upstairs combined with the noise from them coming in all the open windows in our living area and the CONSTANT noise of what I believe was a sliding door upstairs that led to the deck made for a long and sleepless night since it was very late before it settled down. The same thing went on the next evening and I finally emailed BJ (I believe she is the owner?) and asked if there was another property ANYWHERE on the island that we could maybe just move to for the remainder of our stay. She replied and asked what was going on and I answered and explained the situation. I never heard from her again. We couldn't even go out and enjoy the deck because of the noise from above. From that point on we just left early and tried to ignore the noise the best we could at night. My wife and I are actually planning to move to St. John and possibly buy a busin
We are always sad when a guest doesn’t enjoy his or her stay on St. John. Harbor View is a delightful rental and has many guests who come back year after year. It is clearly explained in words and photos that this is one of two rental flats in what was formerly my home. Our manager sends detailed information on how to get to the apartment from the ferry dock well before the guests arrive—it’s a five minute cab ride. The ‘drywall under the sink’ actually is just a cover over a structural beam—you open the door and it’s completely blocked off—so there’s no reason to ever open it again! Owners always hope that guests will communicate any deficiencies to the manager, and leakage of water is important and probably could have been fixed pretty quickly. And if the air conditioner really wasn’t working, it could have been changed out. As far as the rental guests upstairs go, I did contact them personally, and asked them to keep it down (they agreed), and I had new castors put on the outdoor chairs immediately, to eliminate any noise when moving them around the dining table. This guest only spoke of noise in his text to me, and I thought we had it under control with a kind reprimand and new castors. I wish he had contacted our manager at some time during the eight days he suffered in silence—he had dealt with her throughout the rental process and she would have done everything she could to help. His criticism of St. John Properties is unfair and unkind.
Cute flat with a beautiful view
We stayed here for 5 nights and I wish it was longer! The villa is in a great location -- walking distance to town and right next to a grocery store. Slight walk up a hill to get to the flat but well worth it for the absolutely gorgeous view of the bay. The patio was perfect for morning coffee and sunset cocktails. 3 of the 5 days we didn't have a car and we managed just fine with strolling through town and hiking to the closest beach. What a great place to call home on our trip to St John!
Perfect home-base to explore St. John!
My husband and I stayed at the Harbor View for our honeymoon in May, 2016. It was perfect! Though it is a bit of a steep walk, you can easily walk to and from Cruz Bay in less than 10 minutes. The Dolphin Market (grocery) is about a 2 minute walk. The view from the balcony was incredible any time of day. We loved having coffee on the deck in the morning and a glass of wine in the evening. We rented a jeep for 3 of the 5 days we were there (definitely recommend this so you can explore the island) but if you want to stay close to Cruz Bay or if you're taking excursions out of the Bay it is not completely necessary. Harbor View is close enough to walk to town (lots of bars, restaurants, and shops), to some trail heads, and to nearby beaches like Solomon Beach and Honeymoon Beach. We never felt unsafe and though there were people staying in the unit above us, we never heard or saw them. Our space was very private. There is a good breeze that keeps it relatively cool, but there is also an AC unit in the bedroom which was really nice for sleeping. The bed is a king and is very comfortable. There is wifi and satellite TV which was also nice. We only swam in the pool a couple of times because the beaches were so beautiful, but it was very nice. The staff were very friendly and helpful and drove us and our luggage up the hill the day we arrived and checked in. Be prepared for some crowing roosters outside the windows - this is a pretty common site across the island, but it wasn't too bad with the ambient noise of the AC unit at night. The space was a perfect size for a couple - very romantic. If we came back with a larger group, it would be fun to rent the top and bottom units and fill it with friends or family. There is a maintenance guy who lives on the very bottom of the building but you would never know he's there and he's very friendly. I highly recommend this rental!
Pefect place to anchor your St. John visit!
We couldn't have picked a better place to stay for our recent St. John visit. If you want to experience the island as you might if you were a local, this is perfect. Walking distance to Dolphin Market (for your various essentials) and all restaurants, bars, and shops in Cruz Bay & Mongoose Junction, it made all our errands & meals very easy and accessible. For excursions around the island, it's also conveniently located right on Centerline Rd., and very close to the N. Shore Rd., so you can get anywhere you need to go easily. The walk up to the villa is a bit steep (but only for a short distance), so if mobility is an issue, this may pose a challenge. The villa is bright, clean, and very comfortable, with just about all the amenitites you need for a visit to the island. As at least one other reviewer noted, on a busy night, you can hear some of the action "downtown," so peak seasons (presumably, like during Carnival?), it may be an issue. We were so well provisioned, that we never needed to engage property management (though I felt like stopping in just to say "hi!"). The only thing that would prevent us from staying here again is that we will take our kids with us on our next visit, so we'd need another BR.
Gem of a place!
We had a wonderful time at this lovely place. It is convenient to everything and we thoroughly enjoyed the breakfasts on the deck and the lovely sunsets. I actually ended up with a horrific sore throat so I probably used the place more than others do. It had all the comforts of home and the evening breezes provided for peaceful sleeps. We did use our ear plugs on several nights as we visited St John during the festive season (last week of December and into Jan), but the music was generally mellow. Robert downstairs was most helpful with advice; he is a very kind man! The tenants upstairs were also a pleasure to meet. It is an overall great place to stay and enjoy the island.
