About matthew Duyck

I was born and raised in Eugene Oregon where I developed a love of nature and and deep appreciation for the outdoors, especially the mountains and the ocean! I first came to Zihuantanejo in 1980 while working for a world renowned artist who owned a second home here. I spent every winter in Zihuantanejo until one day in 2001, while exploring the endless ribbons of pristine beaches in my jeep, I discovered the quant village of La Barrita and the future home of Spyglass. I then spent the next seven years pouring my heart and soul into creating what I believe to be one of the most unique and enchanting villas anywhere to be found. Now it's time to share that experience! While my business responsibilities keep me in East Hampton New York much of the year, I return to Spyglass frequently to enjoy, as well as to oversee the ongoing improvements that make the Spyglass experience second to none!.

matthew Duyck purchased this villa in 2004

Why matthew Duyck chose Zihuatanejo

I found this particular area to be the most beautiful place on all the Pacific Coast and fell in love with it at first sight!

What makes this villa unique

Thanks to our unique geographical elevations, Spyglass is blessed with some of the most spectacular and dramatic views that the Pacific ocean has to offer. Those same unique geographical components also make our site extremely private!

We are also blessed with an artisan well. So unlike many of our competitors, we have an endless supply of fresh water which allows us to maintain our beautiful gardens which are woven into every square inch of our property.

Spyglass truly is, an enchanting place!

Our super natural short vacation

  • 5 of 5

Our only one true regret is that when booking the Spyglass villa we had no idea that a three day stay was far to short a time to take in all of the beauty and amenities that the villa has to offer. Three nights was no where near enough time so spend in this sprawling sanctuary! It’s almost as if we passed ourselves on the highway between our arrival and departure! Not nearly enough time to discover at the villa and the surrounding area had to offer. However, having said that, we wouldn’t have traded our experience for anything. The full time staff, the gorgeous setting, the pristine beaches, the sprawling villa, the friendly locals, and the FABULOUS cuisine that the chef Correana prepared daily was a an extra special treat! The porpoises dancing right in front of the villa were a favorite for the kids, while the adults found the enormous humpback whales breaching in the nearby distance equally as fascinating. The two Swimming pools we’re amazing as well! We’ve used VRBO several times, yet none of the villas came with a full time staff at not extra charge. Prior to the Spyglass experience, we were lucky to have a made a few times a week! Believe me when I tell you that a full time staff makes all the difference in the world. If you are lucky enough to find yourself renting the Spyglass villa you will not be disappointed! I fact anything but! On our last day at Spyglass, we insisted on having Spyglass’s fabulous masseuses available to to pamper our bodies and help us to forget that we would soon be leaving paradise, if even for a short while!

A dream vacation come true!

  • 5 of 5

Myself and several of my friends recently rented the Spyglass villa and whole experience from start to finish was truly phenomenal! In fact, writing this review there’s so much to say that I’m not even sure where to begin. But here goes. First off, the views from virtually every part of the sprawling villa are to die for! The villa is situated up on a bluff so you can see straight down the beautiful coastline for 24 miles. As if that were not enough, behind the coastline you can see the picturesque Sierra Madre mountains. The villa itself is very eloquently appointed and each of the nine bedrooms are decorated in a very distinct style. The vila is also filed with authentic Mexican antiquities which we found fascinating. We drew straws for who got to stay on the honeymoon suit which like everything else at Spyglass was fabulous! The staff was warm and friendly and were attentive to our every needs. The bartender Roberto and the Chef Carina were over the top, was the house manager Luis. The owner Matthew came up to checked on us each day to make certain that all of our wants and desires were being taken care of. You couldn’t ask for a more considerate and friendly landlord! We wanted to visit the neighboring town of Zihuatanejo for an afternoon of shopping and Matthew volunteered to drive us there himself at no charge. He even picked up our check for lunch which was completely unexpected! (Again Matthew, thank you for lunch and the wonderful conversations) There are not one, but two beautiful swimming pools. One is fresh water and the other is salt water Pool. The salt water pool draws it’s water directly from the ocean and then flow over the infinity edge back to the ocean. A truly brilliant idea on Matthews part who designed the pool himself. There is also a wet bar at each pool as well as a bathroom and outdoor shower. There is definitely no shortage of places to just relax and take it easy. Then there’s the beautiful La Barrita beach which is about a five minute walk from the villa. The beach has about a dozen small restaurants that serve up fresh seafood and cold beers. The beach is clean, rarely ever crowded, and is swimmable. . I could go on and on but let me summarize that this was one of our best vacations ever! We also did not encounter one mosquito or one fly at the villa on our whole trip. Matthew said that’s because the small bats that dwell in the rocks eat them all.

We rented this villa last January and had the best vacation EVER! If fact we enjoyed it so much we just booked the villa again for next January. While showing our friends the VRBO reviews, I was shocked to see one bad review out of 30+ perfect reviews! So either Matthew has a body double, or this particular guest had her own ax to grind! Matthew is one of the most considerate and generous landlords that we’ve ever encountered! He showed up at the villa a couple times each day to make sure that his fabulous staff of eight had everything they needed to make our stay perfect on every level. If the bartender needed addition ice or the chef needed fresh parmesan cheese because we changed our dinner menu at the last minute, it was Matthew whom immediately sped off to the local market to pick up the items needed. Did I mention that upon our arrival, Matthew gave us a clear and articulate orientation regarding the sprawling villa complex! While at the same time, the chef was pampering us with delicious hors d’oeuvres and the bartender was serving us fabulous margaritas and banana daiquiris, all compliments of Matthew. Matthew also used his SUV’s to take us a few miles down the beach twice so we could all help with a sea turtle release at no charge! He also took several of our nature loving friends (again at no charge) down the beach to a beautiful lagoon filled with extraordinary pink Spoonbills and wild crocodiles which was an unbelievable thrill for the camera toting nature buffs in our group. The handcrafted stone stairway that leads down to the to the salt water swimming pool is a work of art. In fact several of the people in our party (myself included) got up each morning and ran up and down the stairs three of four times in a row for exercise, using the pools at either end to cool off. At 84, my grandfather, who is no "Marathon Man” was even able walk the staircase, albeit slowly and enjoy the salt water pool each day! The bottom line is that this is one of the most extraordinary villas that we've ever experienced! The staff of eight is suburb, the landlord Matthew is outstanding (we even persuaded him to join us for dinner one evening so he could tell us the back story as to how it that he stumbled into paradise). The beaches are gorgeous, the locals are friendly and the overall experience was well beyond our expectations! Once again Matthew, we thank you for the oppotuniay to rent your extraordinary villa again this January.

Spyglass Villa Stunning and Spectacular

  • 4 of 5

Our group of 16 adults just spent two weeks at Spyglass, from the first moment driving in we were blown away by the view. There was enough room for all of us to interact with each other or find a quiet spot to just read a book and enjoy the view. Every morning we headed down the beach and walked 5-10 kilometres a day and then would treat ourselves with a beer at the local mexican restaurants on the beach before heading back up the hill to enjoy the afternoon at the fresh water pool or the salt water pool.

The staff is amazing, right from our bartender Nicky to our Chef Karina. Nicky made us any drink that we wanted always with pleasure and Karina made fabulous meals, even cooking the fish that the guys caught on their fishing trips. Carlos made our trips into Zhi so enjoyable and he is a great driver. Matthew the owner is very accommodating and even arranged for massages for anyone who wanted them.

All in all we had a fabulous holiday and would recommend Spyglass for a very relaxing holiday.

A Response to Owner, Matthew's Scathing Post

  • 4 of 5

I must respond to the owner's inaccuracies and blatant lies he posted. First of all, the renter is loved by everyone. I was a guest and I was the one who did not want to sit near a specific person, not the renter. That has absolutely nothing to do with the renter. Secondly, we stayed one week not two. The staff was very kind and accommodating, especially Nikki. The house is old but very charming although guests in the main house were told not to flush toilet paper because of the old plumbing.

The owner arranged, at my request, for 3 musicians to play and he told us a price we agreed to pay the price he mentioned. They also were not mariachis, just regular musicians, which was fine.

The owner told me directly that he almost never sees guests since he's rarely on site.

He would show up and linger and it was quite clear that he made everyone, guests and staff uncomfortable.

The steps are very dangerous since they have no railings and are uneven. I also asked my husband to help me down to the first pool and never made it to the second.

I suggest the owner let his competent staff run his business with minimal supervision for better reviews. And don't post nasty lies.

Owner ruined what could have been a great experience

  • 2 of 5

We heard about Spyglass from friends who had a great family get together a year ago. Unfortunately, our stay was ruined by the constant intrusion of the property owner. The owner was not on site during our friends' stay and, according to him, he is rarely in town when people are renting his villa. The facility is beautiful, the staff are great. We have stayed at many VRBO properties, both staffed and unstaffed. The only time we've ever met an owner is when they turned over the keys upon arrival. My husband and I rented the property for a week for a birthday celebration. We had 6 people for the first 3 nights and a total of 18 the final 4 nights. The owner walked on and off the property at will throughout our stay. It was very disconcerting for us and our guests who found him "creepy". He even stood over one guest while she was on the massage table. It was obvious that the staff do not like him and were put on edge when he was present. He appeared to be under the influence much of the time, just as he did during 2 phone calls prior to our arrival. On 4 separate occasions, he initiated discussions to argue about costs or to overrule what his staff told us we would be charged for services. This was very upsetting to my husband and me as he did this without regard for the fact that our guests were present. When we rented the facility, we were told a gourmet chef from the U.S. would be on site. We were never told otherwise before our arrival, only to find a very nice, local cook who spoke no English and had a very limited repertoire of Mexican dishes. The food was good but not what was initially promised. We had 4 guests with limited mobility (two 80 plus). We were not told it is 136 often steep steps down to the salt water pool. Most of our guests never saw it or made one pilgrimage there. The honeymoon suite had no windows. We were lucky that it was breezy and the bugs were limited. But we found out later from our friends that no one could sleep there during their stay because they got eaten alive by mosquitoes. This should have been revealed in advance. We could have been short a bedroom. The staff of the villa were terrific. The house manager, Luis, was attentive. The bartender, Nikki, was delightful. The kitchen/house staff were pleasant. But if Luis and Nikki were off-site, which happened many times, no other English-speaking staff were available. I would only agree to rent Spyglass with the understanding that the owner is not to be on-site.

Owner's Response: I't beyond belief how upsetting it was for me to receive a review filled with distortions and flat out lies. Someone was was under the influence alright, but I can assure you, it wasn't m! Have you ever met one of those people who is just plain mean, ornery, and disgruntled with their own life? Well, this woman was that person! She was crude and obnoxious the whole trip. Even many her own guests would request separate eating times and even sit at different tables to avoid her. Her claim that I never meet my clients is a total fabrication. If you look at the review from my clients that rented Spyglass just two weeks later you will see that they were delighted with their stay. I would make the rounds to ensure that everything was running smoothly. If fact, rather than regarding me as a nuisance, they insisted that I join them for dinner on two separate occasions. Contrary to what she claims, my staff members have been with me for a combined average of eight years and we all get along famously! As far as my house man and bartender being offsite at times, it was only because they were they were running all over town shopping for this persons constant petty needs. As for the 136 stairs down to the salt water pool. She was informed of this ahead of time, as are all of my clients are. That's why I suggest they take advantage of our bartender and server. As for standing over a client while they were receiving a massage. I won't dignify that accusation with an answer! What I can tell you is that on the morning she left, she refused to pay the balance for the massage people. She also refused to pay over $500.00 in chauffeur fees she accrued during her two week stay, saying that she didn't know that we charged for that. When I told her not only was she told that, but it's also on our website. She told me that she didn't want to discuss it and headed for the airport with yet again, with one of my drivers. On a final note. What she forgot to mention is that I personally made three airport runs myself to pick up her guests! I hired a mariachi band for two hours on the night of her birthday, compliments of Spyglass. I also spent considerable time and energy taking her guests to and from the beach in my SUV so they could avoid the four minute walk, etc. I pride myself on having 30 perfect unsolicited five star reviews, many of which mention me by name. It saddens me deeply to have that my perfect record tarnished by such ungrateful and hateful soul.. Sincerely Matthew
