About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms 1.25 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

Lovely historic home with lots of grace and charm located in quaint Long Beach, MS, one block from the beach, across from the University of Southern Mississippi at Gulf Park, home of the Friendship Oak. This home sits on a large tree filled lot with plenty of privacy, just minutes away from shopping and restaurants in Long Beach and gaming in Biloxi and Gulfport and one hour away from the French Quarter in New Orleans. Unbeatable value for those looking for a quiet vacation away from the hustle and bustle of crowded beaches.

Three bedrooms upstairs, furnished with comfortable queen beds and two twins in third bedroom. A lovely Sunroom also has a queen size bed and comfortable chair makes a place to enjoy early morning coffee or quiet afternoon reading. There is a futon that can be folded out to use as additional sleeping.

The large inviting deck can accommodate grilling, eating or just relaxing.

On site attendant will be available for easy check in. Shuttle services can be arranged for transportation to and from shopping and casinos. Chartered fishing trips also available.

This home has been in our family for 80+ years. My grandparents purchased the house in 1935. As the story goes, there was a bricked hole in the back yard where the booze runners stored their booze or smugglers stored their bounty. I've never seen any proof of this, but it's what my Grandmother used to say and whom am I to argue with her.

My siblings and I spent many long lazy summers in this home and have lots of good memories. We recently decided to share the unique charm of this house. The house has been almost completely restored and we will continue making upgrades. We hope you come to love it as much as we do and return often to enjoy to quiet slow pace of Long Beach, truly a jewel of the Gulf Coast.

We are not "vacation home renters." This is our only place. If you want stainless steel and granite counter tops, this is not the place for you. If you want old south charm and a place to call a home away from home, then please come visit.

Long Beach has been named as the most desirable place to live in Mississippi by the real estate blog Movoto. The website reviews communities around the country.

Long Beach was ranked number one on the list based on total amenities, quality of life, crime rate, tax rates, unemployment, commute and weather.

About Robin Rasmussen

This house has been in my family for 82 years. My parents grew up in Long Beach and moved to Tennessee after they married. My husband and I live in Holly Springs, MS and love to come to the coast to relax. Our family has a long history on the coast. I still have lots of cousins who live on the coast full time. My sister refers to this house as her 'happy place.' We'd love for you to come for a visit.

Why Robin Rasmussen chose Mississippi

This home has been in our family for 82 years. First it was owned by my grandparents and then my father and aunt. We have enjoyed it as our vacation home for years and now its your chance to share in the experience. This is truly a home away from home. All linens are provided, as well as a fully stocked kitchen. There is a grill for outdoor cooking and lots of room to enjoy.

What makes this house unique

The House of Hewes is a family home. It is not a hotel or a condotel. If you want stainless steel and granite, this house is not for you. If you want a lovely home for your vacation with lots of charm and character, this is the place for you. We love sharing our home with guests.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Robin, Thank you for the use of your house. It proved to be an ideal place for our family to visit the area and each other. Your home is lovely and we very much enjoyed it.

A little noisey with trains at night and morning

Owner's Response: So sorry you didn't enjoy your visit to the House of Hewes. Glad to see that you enjoyed the deck. It is one of the great features of the House. As you know there is nothing I can do about the trains. The train runs the entire length of the Coast , so if you come to the Coast, you will hear the train. Best wishes!

Beautiful get away

  • 5 of 5

This home was a perfect place for a family get away. Long Beach is a beautiful town. This was get the right fit for the location

I would love to return as so as possible.

Also, the owner was so kind and sweet and concerned over our every need.

Do visit Darwell's down the street for a lovely evening out!

If you like historic houses it was a nice place to stay.

  • 3 of 5

Overall we did enjoy our stay at the house and would return again. The railroad tracks are right next to the house which didn't bother me at all. There were other members in our party not to excited about the tracks being so close. The only thing that isn't mentioned is the

on- sight attendant. The attendant was very friendly and helpful. If you are looking for privacy on the back porch there is NONE! The attendant and husband live above the outside garage. If you are coming in several cars as we did parking can also be a slight problem . There was one bathroom upstairs and the half bath has been added in a closet under the stairway. Both of the bathrooms were functional and served the purpose but were also historic.

Owner's Response: Dear Charles, I'm glad you enjoyed your visit to my home. I'm sorry that you did not feel that you had a five star experience. We have an on-site attendant and that is mentioned several times on the site and was also included in your hospitality welcome e-mail. In addition, the fact that there are 2 parking spaces is mentioned on the site and in your informational e-mails. Sherry and Rebel had very nice things to say about you and your group. Thanks, Robin

Home Away From Home

  • 5 of 5

This is a great old house. The owners were great to work with and provided everything I needed. The House of Hewes definitely felt like home. I was on the coast for work. There was a printer for me to use that I found very helpful. I didn't get to do much fun, but I felt like I was at home after work. I will definitely stay again when I next have to go to the Coast for work and if I can manage it I will come back for a fun visit.

WONDERFUL CHARMING HOME

  • 5 of 5

We couldn't have asked for a nicer place to stay. This house was cozy and lovely. It is truly a home. It is not granite and stainless steel. The beds were divine. Clearly the owners have taken the time to make sure that we had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The location was perfect, minutes from the beach including a beautiful walk from the house to the beach. The beach was all but private. We loved the quaint city of Long Beach. The owner's recommendations were spot on. The House is exactly as described, including sitting next to a train track, which only added to the uniqueness and charm of the property. Our children were delighted by the trains and couldn't wait for them to come by. We will definitely stay here again when we return to the Coast.
