About The Owner

Cindy and Jaye are season professionals in our careers. Jaye is retired USMC aviation veteran of 22 years and now presently enjoys spending time catering and cooking competition style BBQ under team name "Just Smoke "N" Around BBQ" out of Jackson, GA. (www.justsmokenaroundbbq.com)

Cindy is in the healthcare industry and a 27 year veteran as a Medical Technologist serving with Northside Hospital in Atlanta, GA. We both love the outdoors. We love to travel and enjoy spending time with our 6 grand children between visiting Georgia/ Texas.

The Owner purchased this house in 2009

Why The Owner chose Double Springs

We chose Smith Lake because of the crisp water quality it offers over all others. Water quality is unmatched !! Smith Lake is known to be the 3rd cleanest lake in the country. As evidence, you actually can view the clarity of water 10' below at the shoreline from our dock. The water is just gorgeous resembling emerald green color as this is what drew us to this lake from out of state. "Waterfalls" in the Sipsey Wilderness are just a 45 minute ride from our home offering hiking & beautiful views and scenery. We live in Atlanta- as we commute 4 1/2 hrs to our lake home at Lewis Smith Lake. It's worth the drive for us to escape for some downtime and visit our 'little peace of heaven' . We plan to retire here in about 10 years.

What makes this house unique

Peace, Relaxation, Remote, Bankhead National Forest being across our street 50 yards away ! Easy access gentle slope concrete driveway for turnaround and parking.

Perfect lake weekend!

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 9 (four adults and five kids ages 5-15) enjoyed a wonderful fall weekend at Star Struck. The home and the property are beautiful, and the lake view is gorgeous. We happened to be there during the weekend that Tropical Storm Nate came through Alabama. I think it's easy to have fun on the lake when the weather is perfect, so in some ways the test of a truly great vacation home is how it does when the weather is suboptimal. Well, Star Struck surpassed all of our expectations in that regard. The house has an abundance of wonderful covered outdoor spaces, so despite the rain we were able to play board games on the covered upper porch, nap on the swing bed while listening to the rain, enjoy our meals outside on the lower covered porch, and make smores under the covered gazebo. Also, the house has a whole-house generator that comes on automatically if the power goes out. We noticed that in the materials but admit that we didn't pay much attention to it, because of course the weather was going to be sunny and perfect when we were there. :-) Well, sure enough, we were sitting outside during the storm and heard the generator kick on, and then noticed the clock on the oven blinking. Otherwise, we would have had NO idea that the power had even gone out. The generator was that quick and effective. So on a day when there were widespread power outages in Alabama, we carried on with our vacation in total comfort thanks to that generator.

After the weather cleared, the kids had a blast jumping and fishing off the dock. We did not end up using the canoe, but really appreciated that it was available for our use.

As other reviewers have mentioned, the house is remote - a big asset for us, but once you are there, you really will not want to have to run to the store because you need two eggs to make your pancakes. So we spent extra time before the trip making our grocery list and really thinking through everything we needed for each meal. We found the kitchen and the house in general to be very well-equipped.

Jaye was incredibly kind and helpful as we planned our trip, sharing tips on the activities of interest to us (pontoon boat rentals, waterfall hikes). While the weather put a dent in some of our plans, that just gives us a good excuse to come back.

We enthusiastically recommend Star Struck, and hope to be back soon!

Owner's Response: Cathy thanks so much for taking the time to write us a review ! We are so pleased to hear your getaway weekend to Star Struck was special despite the inclement weather w/ Hurricane Nate over your weekend stay. This is one of many reasons why we purchased a home standby generator as we've experienced power outages in the past and they are no fun when power is out 3 days or more. We appreciate your kind words on Star Struck and we hope you'll book again with us soon !

Lovely location with excellent outdoor space and privacy!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this home with our family (2 adults, 2 small children) and my sister/brother in law. Overall the house is very lovely, especially the great outdoor spaces! There are a few suggestions/tips I have for future guests:

- The kitchen is actually more updated than it looks in the pictures, which is great! It's generally well stocked, but there aren't a ton of silverware/plates/etc so it isn't a bad idea to bring some plastic cutlery/plates/etc if you have a larger group so that you don't continually run out. They have pretty much all the pots and pans you need, but if there is a specific dish/tool you need for a meal I'd make sure to bring it (ie, we couldn't find a colander but made do!)

- Bugs are honestly not that bad outside, but bring some spray just in case.

- The televisions have a few local channels, and that's it. The downstairs one (the larger one) only got maybe 3-4 channels, but not ABC or CW for some reason. The upstairs one (smaller one in the kitchen) did get ABC. The reason I mention that is because while we don't necessarily go to the lake to watch television, it was opening weekend for football and my brother in law about had a conniption due to not being able to watch most of the games, and only being able to watch some of the big games on the smaller TV upstairs- hahaha. So be aware and plan accordingly!

- Make sure to bring all food/supplies you need with you, because you are not close to stores like you may be in other parts of the lake! I think the closest one was maybe 30 minutes, and it was a gas station.

- Duncan Bridge marina is about a 10 minute boat ride from the house, but a 45 minute car drive. They rent boats, but make sure to contact them well in advance because they do book up! They will not bring the boats to you, so just plan accordingly for the drive there and back. Prices are on par with other marinas on the lake, and they are very easy to work with. We had a great time out on the water for one of the days we stayed there!

Overall, we had a great weekend away and were so glad to have the chance to relax with family on a lovely part of the lake.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review. We are glad to hear you stay was enjoyable with great weather to enjoy the water over this Labor Day weekend. We are sorry to hear of your disappointment over the TV (channels) as we've clearly pointed this out in our "Overview" of our listing that only "LOCAL" channels are provided. Here is what our listing states (2) TV's (local channels) available in master suite & daylight basement LR, Dvd player’s available in master suite, basement LR. 27' Wall Mount Vizio in Kitchen for your viewing (local channels only) We try our best to accommodate our kitchen with necessary furnishings /tools/equipment for preparation guest meals based on max occupancy rate of 9 people. Apparently, our colander was available for your use, but may have been located in a different "kitchen drawer" as with additional forks/dinnerware for > 8 adults not to exceed 9 people. Based on your reservation of 4 adults/2 children we believe you had sufficient qty on-hand of silverware/plates and then some based on your party. Just little puzzled here on the silverware/plates issue ?????? Relative to us being remote-thank you for sharing with other future guest in planning/preparation prior to arrival at "StarStruck".

Secluded location with pristine amenities!

  • 5 of 5

The house is better in person than the pictures. We cook and grill a lot and the kitchen is well-equipped. We roasted marshmallows at night and grilled on the Weber charcoal grill.

The owners gave great directions and were in touch for the stay.

We loved the swing bed each morning as we drank coffee and talked. We drove to the Dollar General one day in Double Springs and only took us about 45 min. round trip. Very easy access from Jasper on HWY 195 to get to the house.

We plan to return. After staying in some bad rentals previously, this one is top-notch!

Perfect weekend getaway with the family!

  • 5 of 5

My family had the best weekend at Star Struck! The house was beautiful and very clean. It had everything that we needed for the weekend.

Jaye was incredibly helpful and involved in the process and attentive to the upkeep of the house. He contacted us before we arrived and said the air conditioner was acting up but that someone was already on their way. We arrived and within 30 minutes the AC was fixed and we had no trouble the rest of the weekend.

Heads up for future renters - the house is pretty remote (definitely not a bad thing!) but you are about 30m from grocery stores so make sure to grab everything you need on your way into town so you don't have to make another run.

The house is in a great location on the lake, minimal boat traffic which allowed us to float and swim without fear. The dock is great and has no wood so we didn't have to be afraid of splinters when walking around.

This house is perfect for friend getaways, trips with the family or even just a weekend away with your significant other.

We would not hesitate to rent from Jaye again in the future!
