TUCSON, ARIZONA: Population: close to a million and counting. But still has that small town vibe along with big city excitement. The opera one night and two-stepping in the nearby dance hall the next.
Casa Llanura is a little Casita nestled in the shadows of beautiful Tucson Mountains. Just 4 miles west of I-10 we have created a desert Oasis on the edge of Tucson, a city still small enough to meet your neighbor on a walk around the block, yet large enough to get lost in the crowd during opening night at the symphony. The Casita is situated on a half acre with a private drive and a large parking area, and is decorated in the rustic style of the Southwest with modern touches. Six rooms fully furnished with central heat and air conditioning and all necessary amenities. There is a living room, dine-in kitchen, two bedrooms, one with a queen bed, and one with a twin bed. For those who bring work home there is an office with a desk and a router for wireless internet. Add the laundry room with a full size washer and dryer and you have all you need. For at-home entertainment we provide Cable TV, a DVD player and movies, a Radio/CD player with CD's, puzzles, books, games, brochures and information on local interests. Two golf courses are nearby and if fishing is your passion a lake is 5 minutes from the cottage. Some folks say the best entertainment is sitting on the back porch watching the antics of the resident wildlife, woodpeckers, quail, dove, pigeons, bunnies, a friendly tarantula, squirrels, lizards, the occasional Javelina family and other harmless critters.
Rest, walk, bike, hike, fish, golf, eat, drink, work or play, this is the place for you.
Come…see for yourself. Experience Tucson!

Dee: I first visited Arizona in 1962. Left Illinois in a snowstorm and arrived in Tucson when the orange trees were in full bloom. It was love at first sight and a year later my first husband Bill, I and 2 kids moved to this laid back western town. The west side of Tucson has been my home since 1963. Raised 4 kids and over the years our family has increased to 6 grandkids and 2 great-grands. Bill died in 1999. I met Tom in 2011 and we were married in 2015. The photo is of Tom and me March 2016. Tom is originally from Michigan and he spent his winters here since 2001. He fell in love with Tucson’s desert and mountains. The sunshine is a plus, too. He often plays on one of the many golf courses nearby. Guests are welcome to join him. We like to take an evening walk around the neighborhood, greeting the neighbors and spotting the Javelina family crossing the road. To end the day we have supper on our deck enjoying a glass of wine and listening to the quail chatter while watching the Tucson Mountains turn orange and purple as the sun sets. If you are at the Casita you can enjoy all of this, too. Life is real sweet.
Dee purchased this Cottage in 1985
Why Dee chose Rancho Del Cerro
Bill and I bought this acre of land in 1985. The main house was finished in 1986. In 1997 the guest house was built on the back half-acre for family and friends to use when they visit and we welcome others to enjoy our unique desert lifestyle. I love the Southwest and hope to give our guests a taste of it in the way we've decorated the Casita and grounds. You must come and see for yourself.
What makes this Cottage unique
I would say one of the most unique benefits of this location is the easy access to the entire city and other destinations. 'SUMMERTIME AND THE LIVIN' IS EASY' (and cheap) in Tucson. Everywhere you go you will find HOT deals and discounts for entertainment, cool movies, good eats and fun shopping. Not far from the Casita is a small fishing lake with picnic tables, playgrounds & dog runs, golf courses & tennis courts. Downtown is a happening place on summer nights. There you'll find galleries, museums, shops, little cafes, upscale eateries and live theatre productions. Drive scenic Gates Pass to popular tourist attractions such as the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Saguaro National Park and the International Wildlife Museum. Head midtown to Randolph Park where the golf course has discounts all summer, and you can paddleboat on the Lake and visit the Reid Park Zoo. Tucson Botanical Gardens, just a few blocks away, is a refreshingly cool place to lunch and stroll the paths to see the abundance of plants growing here in the desert. Experience the oasis in the desert at Agua Caliente Park. This 101-acre park features a natural spring and pond that is home to an exceptionally rich mix of plants, wildlife, and historic features in the backdrop of the Santa Catalina and Rincon Mountains. If you drive up Mount Lemmon you will be rewarded with the scent of Pine trees and cold lemonade at the Village cafe on top of the mountain. Lastly, for a BIG lake experience, one of our largest Southern Arizona lakes is Roosevelt Lake. Near Phoenix and just 2 hours drive from the Casita. There are boat and gear rentals, suitable for fishing and water sports. So now you have just a few ideas of summer fun in Tucson, and we can keep you entertained and cool for a whole summer, or just a week. Casita's sunsets are a little piece of Heaven. The night sky is so clear you can see the constellations. It seems that we are a million miles away from anything. Yet just minutes from everything!

Wonderful stay, beautiful property!
Your beautiful Casita was very accurately described. Very comfortable, well stocked and spotless! We had a wonderful time hiking the many nearby trails, exploring the area and visiting the Desert Museum as well as the Air & Space Museum. Very convenient location! So much privacy for having everything so close. We prepared many meals at the Casita just to be able to enjoy your beautiful backyard. So relaxing having coffee on the patio n the morning while watching the wildlife. Thank you Dee for your generosity. We appreciated the snacks you left for our late night arrival. It was truly a perfect stay! I would highly recommend and hope to be back! That you!
IT'S A "CUTIE"!
This little house has a lot of Southwest charm, inside and out. It’s on a half-acre and very private. if we need anything the owners are just a short walk on a path to the main house. We enjoyed sitting on the large back porch watching sunsets and the wildlife. In the morning if you scatter birdseed you will attract a variety of birds, as well as bunnies, ground squirrels, and the occasional Javelina families. The amenities are abundant, everything we needed was provided. We spent 5 months here and it was hard to say goodbye to the wondrous mountains and all the activities we enjoyed in Tucson.
Dee and Tom are gracious hosts, with a knack for creating a lovely place to call our ‘home away from home”.
Private Sonoran Desert Retreat
Two of us enjoyed the privacy and desert wildlife. Very clean and comfortable. Very convenient for hikes on Mt. Lemmon. Enjoyed evening and morning meals on the patio.
My husband and I stayed over the weekend for a special celebration and had a wonderful visit. Our favorite activities were just sitting on the porch swing (overlooking the city in a very peaceful setting) while we watched the sun rise and set each day. We enjoyed the same while experiencing a full moon. We hiked the Sweetwater trail which is within walking distance of this lovely casita. We explored the neighborhood, the downtown areas, the Sonoran Desert Museum and the Silverbell Lake. The accommodations were perfect for us, providing the privacy and benefits of being in a "home" vice a hotel room. Our hosts were very gracious as well. The home is comfortable and well stocked. Recommend this for anyone interested in enjoying solitude and beauty.
Julie, thank you so much for the kind words! Means a lot to us to know guests are happy. All best wishes to you and Rich, Dee and Tom
My husband and I stayed here for a month for work, and brought our 2 small children with us. The house is tucked away in the hills with beautiful views of the city and mountains. Its very peaceful and a wonderful place to just relax and unwind! We used the study for a portable crib, which worked out very well, with our older child in the twin bed. The back yard (very large!) was perfect for them to explore with plenty of rocks, birds, lizards, nooks and crannies to keep two busy children engaged and exploring. The property has an impressive array of desert flora, if you're interested. I had a lot of fun practicing my novice photography skills. We also enjoyed the covered porch and shade trees to beat the heat as summer was approaching. There is, of course, plenty to do in Tucson, and the Children's Museum and Sonora Desert Museum are a must. The neighborhood seemed very safe with plenty of winding roads for jogging or bike riding (I regularly ran by myself, and saw many other women jogging alone). The house itself was comfortable, the kitchen was well stocked and the internet was fast. This is a great "home base" for families to stage your Tucson adventure! Would absolutely come back again!
This was our second stay for a 3month period from January 1st to April 1st. This place is a little piece of heaven. The location is perfect - we have a dog, so we're minutes away from sweet water trailhead where she's allowed to hike. We're also very close to the bike path (Santa Cruz River Park), which we used for biking and running. There are many, many wonderful hiking trails nearby - Catalina Mountains 1/2 hour drive, Tucson Mountains 10 minute drive. The casita is private and quiet. The sounds are mourning doves and quails. We get visits from the javelinas and a few coyotes which are harmless.
We're close to grocery shopping (10 Mins), malls (15Mins), downtown (20 Mins).
The casita is furnished appropriately, although staying for 3 months at a time, we wished perhaps there was a sectional in the corner of the living room! We spent a lot of time on the large patio.
Dee and Tom are excellent hosts. They alway respond quickly, yet gave us our privacy.
It was a great spot to get away from our Winnipeg winter!
Thanks Tom and Dee, hopefully we'll return one day!
Carol, what more can I ask for? You described the property and all of the activities and amenities available in great detail. You and Paul were wonderful 'guests' (now friends) and we appreciate your kind words. The two seasons you spent with us we will always treasure. We will miss you next year when you take your adventure across the sea, with the hope it is all you wished for. Regards, Dee and Tom
Note: Since we are in a rural area there is no bus service so a car is a must. With your ‘wheels’ you’re on your way to fun. Places to See and Things to Do! For walkers and hikers Sweetwater Preserve and El Camino Del Cerro Trailheads are 5-10 minutes away from the Casita. Note: Dogs are not allowed on Sweetwater trails. Just 10 miles from the Casita you can drive up beautiful GATES PASS in our Tucson Mountains. You will see hundreds of giant Saguaros and red cliffs and at the top there is a popular Viewpoint to gaze at the endless vistas and stunning sunsets. Continuing down the Pass you will find three of our most popular destinations; Old Tucson Studios, Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and Saguaro National Park. Just 30 minutes from the Casita is one of the highest rated VA Hospitals and Related Veterans Services in the country. It's a self-contained community on several acres with beautiful Southwestern style adobe buildings housing the various departments. This large hospital for veterans provides dozens of services and programs, including lodging for visiting families. For a day of shopping and entertainment we have 4 covered shopping malls, 3 large outdoor malls and several small shopping centers, cafes and fine restaurants, live theatre, museums and 3 Casinos. If sports are your game try our lakes for boating and fishing, parks for swimming, tennis and golf. Join Tom for a day of golf. He has an extra set of clubs if you can’t bring yours. Two Bicycles are also provided for guests. Please bring helmets. This neighborhood and surrounding areas are walking, hiking, and biking heaven. At day’s end we invite you to experience the laid back atmosphere of the west. The solitude, lush desert surroundings, awesome sunsets and clear night skies filled with stars are yours to enjoy. Relax on the Casa’s back porch with a cold Arizona tea or a Margarita and watch the sky turn to fire as the sun sets behind the Tucson Mountains. Ah, the end of another beautiful day in Tucson. What tomorrow will bring is yours for the choosing. Come…see for yourself. Experience Tucson!
