About The Owner

My family and I have lived on the property for over 30 years. Paoa is a retired fire captain, my husband's a manager of the Hawaii island newspapers and I manage a non-profit community center a mile from the house. Our family also includes our two young adult children, our dogs Taimane and Roxy, and Teddy our tortoise. Over the weekend you can find us bodysurfing, picking shells, fishing, and playing with our dogs at the beach. We're friendly and easy to get along with so please don't hesitate to ask questions if you want recommendations or if there's something that we can address during your stay. We're grateful for the opportunity to host you during your vacation on Oahu.

Why The Owner chose Ahuimanu

My grand parents built the ohana cottage when I was born to accommodate their growing family. Now that everyone has grown up and moved out we share the house with visiting family and friends like you who want to experience Hawaii like a locals instead of a tourist. Since Honolulu is one of the most expensive places to visit we offer budget and family friendly accommodation for malahini and kama'aina alike.

What makes this cottage unique

We live below the majestic Koolau mountain range. When it rains heavy here the water falls spill out and line the the entire mountain range from Kahalu'u to Likelike. The windward side is also blessed with beautiful greenery, sandy beaches, scenic drives and a much slower island pace.

Guestbook comments from the owner

TKS again for your house. Our family had a great vacation in Oahu!

The kids say HI to Roxy and Tie and Teddy of course ;-)))

Nice Place to Stay

  • 5 of 5

The house was well stocked with things you would need to be comfortable! There were even extras like a pack and play, books, movies, shampoo, reusable grocery bags, a rolling cooler, beach supplies, and cleaning supplies. Both bedrooms had ac units that worked really well and there were floor fans as well. The wifi was fast. When there was an issue Val was quick to respond and fix the problem. Val and her husband even helped us jump our car when it died! The only thing I would want to give a heads up about is the drive way is very steep and the road is narrow so the parking spot is a little tricky to get in and out of. Over all we loved staying here and Val and her husband were really nice and helpful!

Great vacation rental and perfect location for a relaxing trip.

Loved the cottage!! Everything we were looking for with everything we needed and more. Loved staying in this area of the island. Have previously stayed in Waikiki, North Shore and Eva Beach but enjoyed the views and scenery on this side of island the most.

Great location with roomy, comfortable space

  • 5 of 5

My family wanted to stay out of the hustle and bustle of big city. This quiet cottage was the perfect place for us to stay. A 30 minute drive to almost anywhere on the south and east parts of the island. The place is large and well appointed with kitchen appliances and recreational equipment. It was just perfect. Thank you so much for allowing us to enjoy the space!

Great price, spacious and clean

  • 4 of 5

It’s was the perfect location being near family we were visiting and affordable. Living in Hawaii is expensive, so finding this place with the right rate made it easier on us. The place was newly remodeled so it was nice and clean. They even had beach equipment for you to use 😎The only downfall was the hill you had to hike to get to your home. Awesome place. I would totally recommend it. Aloha!!!

Would love to recommed this place but can't

  • 2 of 5

When we pulled up we relized that you have to walk up a very steep drive way and up stairs. Has we known this we would not have rented here because we had a disabled person traveling with us. Then when we went to open the door, the doo knob was on backwards. The hole to out the key in was on the inside and the knob to lock the the door was on the outside so we could not secure our belongings. It was fixed on our last day there. We were there three nights and had no hot water. To be fair Velzey did respond and tried to fix the hot water issue. When she couldn't she left us a nice gift bag and refunded us one nights stay. As I said, I would love to recommend this place but I think it is only fair that you know what you are getting into.

Owner's Response: Thank you, guest reviews are important to us and they do give prospective and future guests a point of view or reference from someone who experienced the cottage. This unit is "On a mountain side" as stated in the title of property and is also written in the overview of the property "One uncovered parking stall is located on the bottom of our driveway. A steep driveway and stairs lead up to the cottage that is tucked away from the main road." I apologize if you missed this disclosure or if it was not clear when you booked the rental. I am so embarrassed about the door knob and would have fixed it ASAP if it was brought it to my attention. Our handyman did discover the door knob on the second day while going into the house to address the water heater and fixed it immediately. This is our fault and it was an honest yet careless mistake on his part. As he took the door off the hinges to repaint it a day prior to your arrival and hastily put the knob on backwards. The house is private, not viewable or accessible to the public from the road but I urge you and future guest to speak up in a situation like this so it can be addressed. Especially if you question the safety of your belongings. As for the water heater, I truly did have the appliance repair guy who installed the water heater come to troubleshoot it along with our handyman. I felt it run hot, however we did not let it run for 10 minutes to learn the way our guest did that it didn't stay hot. By the time we got the part for the heater to work properly, it was the end of the your 3 day stay. I felt so bad that I bought gifts or makana for you to take back home with you and credited one night for the inconveneience of not having hot water. You responded "Mahalo. That is very nice of you. We really appreciate it!" and we continued to communicate up until your departure from the house. I apologize again for the events that took place, and encourage future guests to bring issues to my attention in real time while they can be addressed.

Great value! Private area all to yourself!

  • 4 of 5

Comfortable, homey, clean and best bang for the buck on the windward many amenities....beach gear, towels, kitchen facilities and TV. The owners are so welcoming and responsive. The air conditioner was not working in one of the rooms and they immediately replaced it with a new one. We would definitely stay here again. Thank you Val!
