The Rainbow Canyon Casita is nestled on the high desert plateau bordering the San Juan Mountains. It has an amazingly efficient straw bale, passive solar design that compliments the surrounding 35 acre setting. The name of our high desert paradise comes from the abundant rainbows that grace the canyon between the rental home and our residence during the 'monsoon' season. Designed to embrace the needs of individuals desiring a quiet space for creativity or travelers looking for southwest-style outdoor fun, this home is centrally located and designed to meet your needs.
Located above the Dolores River Valley, just 2.5 miles from the Town of Dolores and 12 miles north of Cortez, Colorado 'the gateway to the southwest', the house sits on a mesa top at 7400 ft. above sea level. There are big sky views of the mountains and mesas in all directions. Frequent visitors include humming birds, mule deer, coyotes and nighthawks. See the sunrise over the La Plata Mountains from bed, and enjoy spectacular sunsets. Every day and every season brings a new host of activities and sights to enjoy.
This unique and artistic house has been completely remodeled including a new kitchen and bath. It has an open floor-plan with a 2 level loft (bedroom & study) and a 2nd bedroom/TV room downstairs, along with the kitchen - dining - living room area. The loft serves as the main bedroom with a queen bed and a separate upper loft sunroom suitable for writing, yoga, playing a favorite instrument, exercising, painting, meditation or just watching the ever-changing “Stanton Engleheart” skies over Mesa Verde and Ute Mountain. One or two additional guests may use this space for a queen Aero-Bed. Yoga mat included! The downstairs bedroom serves as a tv room or separate room to hang-out if you need some space. The bed is a new La-Z-Boy queen sleeper sofa with their unique 'SlumberAir' technology. The bed is very comfortable and can be adjusted to your desired level of firmness. The bathroom is equipped with a slipper tub and separate tiled shower. A fully equipped kitchen allows flexibility for food preparation, whether it’s ready-to-eat organics from the Dolores Food Market or produce from the seasonal Cortez Farmer’s Market.
Central to Durango, Telluride, and Mesa Verde, this location includes Lake McPhee, San Juan National Forest, Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, Navajo and Ute Mountain Tribal reservations and other southwest sites. Outdoor activities are plentiful. For example; the area is a mountain biker’s paradise with Boggy Draw trails at your doorstep and Phil's World a few miles away. River rafting the Dolores in season is a local favorite, including a float from Riverside Park, jumping off the boulder at the “swimming hole” and more. For music fans the local festivals include the fabulous Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Silverton Jubilee, Four Corner's Folk Festival, and Dolores River Festival. The area is rich in ancestral Puebloan culture. The Anasazi Heritage Center is a good source for planning excursions into native lands.

Don is retired and Lori a local physician. Our daughter. Elizabeth is at Dolores High School. We all enjoy mountain bikiing the nearby trails (bike from the house!), paddling the Dolores river and skiing at our 'home mountain' in Telluride. We also enjoy making music in the mountains and are avid 'festivarians' at the near-by venues.
The Owner purchased this house in 2009
We live on the 35 acres adjacent to the rental property in our own energy-efficient strawbale home. We bought this house to preserve the natural beauty of our area and hope to protect the joined properties through a conservation easement in the future..
We live in an area that was once a 350 acre mesa top ranch which was developed into ten, 35 acre parcels. It is quiet with great views and only 3 miles to town and the river. We enjoy being able to take a walk around the 35 acres and along our rural gravel road, From our front door we can step into cross country skis or ride our mountain bikes to the nearby trailhead. We love living in the sunshine and beauty of the southwest in our strawbale paradise. We look forward to sharing our experience and knowledge of the area with you.
My husband and I rented the Rainbow Casita for the month of July, and we were thrilled with our vacation home. The owners are amazing people, and they made sure that everything was perfect from start to finish. The house is spacious, well appointed, and filled with natural light, with a beautiful view from every window. We woke up to sunrises over the La Plata mountain range and ended each day with sunsets over Sleeping Ute Mountain, followed by amazing stargazing at night. Inside, the house is warm and friendly, with extremely comfortable beds, great sofas and chairs, and a lovely sound system. Everything is top notch: from the linens and quilts to the DKNY towels and Patagonia blankets to the fluffy pillows and beautiful rugs, all the appointments are elegant and make a unique contribution to the beauty of this vacation home. The kitchen is a chef's dream, with full sets of Oneida cookware, Henkel knives, and Fiestaware dishes, and the pantry is stocked with a variety of spices, condiments, soups, popcorn, coffees, and teas. Outside, the gas Weber grill made grilling a breeze. The owners have invested time and treasure into this beautiful home so that their guests have a cozy, comfortable, and relaxing experience at the Rainbow Casita. We were treated with great consideration and respect, and left with many happy memories. We hope to come back soon!
Our stay was perfect. We came to the four corners as part of a road trip along the million dollar highway. The house is on the mesa above Dolores, CO. in a setting that is secluded and peaceful, with great views. The house was warm, clean and comfortable. The decor has a charming southwest mountain vibe. Very homey. Amazing stars at night.
Dolores is a quiet town. We were pleasantly surprised to find the local Brew Pub serves brick oven pizza and great local brews. Apparently there is a happening local music scene as well.
The owners were very friendly and helpful, pointing us to many other restaurants and attractions in the area.
I would certainly recommend this property to anyone venturing through the four corners area. It's close to so many things.
