About the property

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms + Sleeping Porch, 3.5 Baths, (sleeps 6 adults)

Welcome to Lonesome Valley, an unparalleled Cashiers retreat, nestled in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina. Unwind and relax in this private cottage, available for rent on a limited basis, tucked away deep in the hardwoods of Lonesome Valley’s 800 pristine acres. There are only 28 cottages in this gated community which is surrounded by the largest Box Canyon in the eastern U.S.

The cottage sits on the banks of Lonesome Valley’s largest stream and trail, allowing you to start your daily hike just steps from your back door. Wake up to cool, breezy mornings and enjoy your first cup of coffee in front of a roaring fire on the spacious porch overlooking the crystal clear mountain stream.

Lonesome Valley is known for its amazing natural beauty and truly breath-taking views. In addition to 11 miles of on-property hiking trails, guests are welcome to enjoy canoes, paddle boats, kayaks, fly fishing, and the 6-hole disc golf course set up on the Lonesome Valley meadow. From late May through October dinner is served on site at Canyon Kitchen, providing one of Western North Carolina’s premiere dining experiences.

After an invigorating hike on Lonesome Valley’s 11 miles of private groomed trails, make your way into Cashiers (2 miles) for a day of shopping, dining, and/or waterfall viewing. Save a day for a visit to Lake Glenville (10 minutes from Lonesome Valley) for pontoon boating and tubing/skiing on Cashier’s best kept secret.

Fully furnished, the cottage comfortably sleeps six guests in 3 bedrooms / 3.5 baths. This Lonesome Valley jewel was custom designed by Mountainworks, designer of the 2010 Southern Living Cottage of the Year. The master suite is located on the first floor with two guest bedrooms upstairs. The open plan kitchen is fully equipped and beautifully appointed with wood cabinets and granite countertops.

Dine indoors on a large heart pine table or enjoy an outdoor meal on the covered porch. A cozy window seat in the library/study provides a great escape for afternoon naps and/or reading.

You can enjoy warm, relaxing fires in both the great room as well as on the large porch overlooking the stream. Perfect opportunities for enjoying your morning coffee and/or making those nightly Smores!

Lonesome Valley is situated 2.5 miles east of the quaint town of Cashiers and a short 15-minute drive to Highlands, NC. The Asheville, NC airport is exactly one hour from Lonesome Valley and Atlanta can be reached in three hours by car.

All linens are provided, as well as starter paper products. Every detail has been considered for your comfort. The house is professionally cleaned before your arrival, and local waterfall and trail maps are provided.

About Chad Foster

After spending an amazing eight years as host of ESPN's Fly Fishing America television program, I thought I had seen most of America's extraordinary natural settings. Then, I discovered Lonesome Valley, an amazing sanctuary with truly incredible views and phenomenal surroundings. We have treasured every moment spent here over the past several years and look forward to sharing that experience with others.

A Home Like Your Own

  • 5 of 5

Five stars for an absolutely phenomenal experience overall - if we could give ten stars, we would!! The cottage is perfect for couples or families. There's lots of space to spread out, settle in, and also to come together. The front porch is great for late afternoon sun and iced tea, the back porch is amazing for morning coffee (in season, the hummingbirds put on a full show!) and evening fires, and the oversized kitchen island is a natural place for gathering to eat and laugh. It has the class of a resort, the charm of a cabin, and the comfort of a happy home. Be prepared to never want to leave!!!

The owners are FANTASTIC, too, which was the icing on the cake of the whole experience. From start to finish, Chad was prompt, courteous, kind, and genuine. He shared tips about hiking trails and fishing holes, called to make sure we arrived and all was well...he treated us like his personal guests at every turn, which really made the trip feel special. We'll definitely be back every year to make more memories!

Simply Stunning, Tranquil Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Words cannot describe the breathtaking beauty of Lonesome Valley. The rock is beyond dramatic, changing shape and character as the day's light shifts... The woods are lush and you can wander forever on the trails that meander through the valley, often ending in a secret overlook or special gazebo with a view... The meadow rolls along a gorgeous creek, the lake and pond are meditative on windless days, and all manner of fascinating wildlife can be seen (even a few bald eagles!). From reading on the back porch swing, listening to the sound of the stream and drinking wine by the fire or looking up at the stars, to exploring the property and fishing for trout, the Cottage provides the perfect place for true relaxation and rejuvenation. Stay in or venture out, either way, you'll find yourself planning to return as soon as you step in the door!

Family-Friendly Getaway

  • 5 of 5

There's truly something for everyone at the Cottage in Cashiers! The Cottage itself is a dream come true - it felt like we were stepping into our own cozy home! We immediately felt comfortable. The Cottage is an easy, laid back, classy mountain retreat where everyone instantly relaxes. While the Cashiers area has much to offer for family entertainment, there's almost no need to leave Lonesome Valley! Our kids (ages 5 through 14) had a blast spin-fishing, playing frisbee golf and bocce ball, catching salamanders in the stream behind the Cottage, and more! Waterfalls, swimming holes, lakeside beaches and boat rentals are among some of the activities within a few minutes drive - it's impossible to do it all! We hiked out of the back door of the house, dug up worms to bait bass, read in the sun, played cards by the fire on the back porch, and truly vacationed!

One Special Place!

Amazing Location, Beautiful Home Welcomes You!

Everything you can imagine and more awaits you here in this gorgeous hidden canyon! We have just returned from our second stay and already dream of returning in the spring. A crystal clear stream is just steps away from the back door. The rock face of the canyon soars over your head. Beautiful hiking trails weave throughout this pristine wooded wonderland. In the summer, take a canoe out on the perfectly landscaped lake, swim in waters that are as clear as the mountain streams, or just hang out on the individual decks scattered around the lake. In the winter, cozy up with a blanket by the fireplace on the back porch after your hike to the trout pond to feed the fish.

The house is somehow bigger than it looks in the photos, beautifully decorated, and immaculate. The family can gather around the newly enlarged kitchen island, the dining room table or the wonderful table on the back porch for meals - or you can sit by the stream at your own picnic table! The family room is perfectly appointed, the bedrooms are laid out nicely. And of course, there is that outdoor shower!

Cashiers is charming and has avoided the flash of some mountain town destinations. We love going into town for coffee or pizza, and exploring the lovely little shops. Church on the property of Lonesome Valley was incredible - with local musicians serenading us with banjo and fiddle. The people we met along the way were as friendly as could be. We felt like we had gone back in time and stepped into a small town where everyone knew your name and welcomed you as if you were family. We can't wait to return!

Lonesome Valley Home

  • 5 of 5

This spectacular home nestled near a stream in Lonesome Valley has it all. The home was perfect for our family with a modern kitchen and open floor plan living and dining area. Plenty of room to share our days adventures while preparing dinner. The indoor/outdoor fireplace, screen porch, and location gave us such a feeling of solitude and relaxation. The outdoor shower was so much fun there was always a line waiting our turn. This location gave us incredible access to fly fishing, hiking, shopping and dining. Canyon Kitchen on property is a must! This is a Gem in hiding literally in the woods. We will be back. 5 Stars is not enough.

NC Mountain Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 7 stayed in this beautiful home, located behind the gates in Lonesome Valley, for a family wedding. It exceeded our expectations in every way! The secluded house is absolutely beautiful, with so much warmth and charm. The screened-in porch, with fireplace, was our favorite gathering place with a wonderful swing, rocking chairs and surround sound music. The hiking trail and stream located right out the back door was amazing as were the entire grounds of approximately 800 acres. This cozy home has all the amenities you could possibly want.

We also enjoyed the local restaurants in and around nearby Cashier's. Chad was wonderful to work with and so accommodating. We would highly recommend this property and I look forward to coming back and enjoying this mountain paradise again!
