About Jon Wesson

We are self-employed and work together so sometimes it feels that there is no end to the 'work day'. Our lake getaway lets us put work behind and enjoy communing with nature. Canoeing is our favorite pastime. Around the cabin we particularly enjoy seeing the wildlife - deer, otters, foxes, bald eagles and golden eagles.

Jon Wesson purchased this cabin in 2010

Why Jon Wesson chose Arley

Our cabin is just a short drive from where we live, but feels like an escape to a mountain lake. The Rock Creek Branch of Smith Lake is not heavily trafficked with boats, so we can still take the canoes out for a relaxing float. Although we feel like we are miles from anything at the cabin, we love that in reality we are only five minutes from grocery stores and restaurants.

What makes this cabin unique

We so love getting away from it all, but still being just minutes from I-65. The stars in the night sky let us know we have left light pollution behind. Walking out in the morning to see the mist on the lake, sitting on the deck with our cup of morning coffee or catching a glimpse of a deer walking through the woods all serve to drain away the worries and instill a sense of calm.

Great get-away!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at Scout's Hideaway.

The cabin was fully furnished. The dock and canoes were great.

We can't wait until our next trip!

Owner's Response: Nothing like a canoe float in the late afternoon or early morning to give you a fresh perspective on life. Upstream toward the headwaters, there are limestone bluffs that are truly amazing. We recommend you visit again on each anniversary!

We absolutely loved Scout Hideaway! It was perfect for a quick getaway! So quiet and peaceful! We loved that canoes were provided. We saw all kind of wildlife on our venture out in the lake. We can't wait to visit back!

Owner's Response: We're pleased you enjoyed the cabin and lake. The lake is rich with all kinds of life. Once, we saw a large, majestic bald eagle in the lake dining on a fish. When listening to the sounds on the lake at night, it really makes one appreciate the wonders of nature. Visit again. We'll leave the light on.

Owner's Response: We are very glad you enjoyed your visit. There is an abundance of large houses on the lake, but when we built our cabin in 2010, we wanted to create a simple, comfortable place for couples and small families to enjoy the water in the day and campfires at night. We wanted something similar to lake houses of our childhood but with modern comforts situated in a quiet area of the lake. A place to slow down and relax. We believe we achieved this goal. We hope you visit again soon.

Much more than we expected ~

  • 5 of 5

From the minute we stepped through the doors ~ everything was wonderful and more than we ever expected. Jon & Jackie Wesson were attentive to our needs and most accomidating. The home was clean and fresh feeling with much attention to detail and offered all the comforts of home (fresh patchwork quilts for the beds, lights that dimmed in every room and a library full of classic movies and favorite/classic best seller paperbacks). The fire pit welcomed a social gathering of Smores and guitar strumming folk songs. A weekend we will not soon forget. Did I mention exploring with the canoes, fishing and swimming from the dock.

We couldn't have been more pleased.

Owner's Response: We so enjoyed your sharing the pictures of your lovely family having fun at the cabin! Canoes are our favorite mode of locomotion and let us see the small things we would miss out on at a faster speed. The cabin, for us, always provides a way to reset the clock, slow life back down – even if only for a few days, and appreciate those things that have been somewhat placed on a back-burner with the advent of more and more technology – family time, strumming the guitar, reading (an actual book!), the peace of the morning as you drink that first, unrushed cup of coffee, and the brilliance of a night sky without light pollution. Hope y'all can visit again soon!

Clean and peaceful

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our weekend at Scout's Hideaway. The cabin was very clean and nice. It was very peaceful and what we needed. The owners were were great and responded to any questions quickly. Nice views and and had rosemary bush for seasoning. We also enjoyed sitting around fire pit. Wish it wasn't too cold to use outdoor shower. Hope to come back again and would highly recommend.
