About Jon Wesson

We are self-employed and work together so sometimes it feels that there is no end to the 'work day'. Our lake getaway lets us put work behind and enjoy communing with nature. Canoeing is our favorite pastime. Around the cabin we particularly enjoy seeing the wildlife - deer, otters, foxes, bald eagles and golden eagles.

Jon Wesson purchased this cabin in 2010

Why Jon Wesson chose Lewis Smith Lake

Our cabin is just a short drive from where we live, but feels like an escape to a mountain lake. The Rock Creek Branch of Smith Lake is not heavily trafficked with boats, so we can still take the canoes out for a relaxing float. Although we feel like we are miles from anything at the cabin, we love that in reality we are only five minutes from grocery stores and restaurants.

What makes this cabin unique

We so love getting away from it all, but still being just minutes from I-65. The stars in the night sky let us know we have left light pollution behind. Walking out in the morning to see the mist on the lake, sitting on the deck with our cup of morning coffee or catching a glimpse of a deer walking through the woods all serve to drain away the worries and instill a sense of calm.

Beautiful & Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

This cabin on Smith Lake is a little slice of heaven. We spent 5 wonderful days canoeing, swimming, fishing and boating. The cabin was immaculate and charming. The kitchen is well stocked. We enjoyed re-connecting with our young adult children (ages 19 & 21) during our stay. During the day we played on Smith Lake and at night we enjoyed playing cards and board games as there is no TV or Wi-Fi. We loved that we "unplugged". We rented a boat from Squirrel's Marina and they were just as nice and helpful as the owners of the cabin. Everyone responded to all emails in a timely manner. There are a lot of stairs to climb back and forth to the dock/lake. We looked at it as our daily workout! ;-) It does take some getting used too. Overall, a fabulous place to stay, peaceful, quiet, cozy and charming. Beds are comfortable too! ;-) The towns of Arley and Addison are only 10 minutes away. Smith Lake is beautiful. We'll definitely be back.

Peaceful/Unplugged from everything

  • 5 of 5

We loved out getaway weekend to Scout's Hideaway! It was the most peaceful/relaxing trip we may have every been on. There was no noise just the sound of fish jumping in the water. The cabin was so nice and cozy. We loved the decor and the open concept with the kitchen. The owners were so fast to respond via text/emails and were so helpful in making us feel right at home. We definately want to come back and bring our son next time :)

Awesome weekend

  • 5 of 5

We just left Scout's Hideaway and we miss it already!

We loved the decor and the peaceful feeling upon entering. The owners have taken great care to make sure you have everything you need. They responded quickly to emails and texts and were happy to help.

If you're looking for a quiet, relaxing place to stay, this is it! There were very few boats on the water so it was easy for us to ski, and tube. We are hoping to visit again before school starts.

Peaceful Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Scout's Hideaway, it is a very peaceful setting. The cabin is right in front of the lake, and has everything you need for a comfortable stay. Our stay was too short unfortunately! I brought my 6 year-old and my one-year old, and even though they are lots of stairs to get to the water, we did not have any problems. I would definitely recommend it!

Special place

  • 4 of 5

I was going through some old emails and realized I never left a review! This place is great - quiet, secluded, on a branch of Smith Lake that is not busy at all. We spent 6 nights there, and will go back if given the opportunity. Big pluses - the outdoor shower (was so nice to use first thing in the morning or after an afternoon in the lake), The fire pit/chairs, security (locked gate at driveway), canoes and covered swim pier. The house itself is great too, plenty of room for my family of four. Little to no cell service on Verizon (which was fine by me...). It had everything we needed and then some. And yes, there are a few steps to the water but after the first couple of trips you get used to it. Thanks for a great week!

Owner's Response: The outdoor shower is definitely one of our favorites There is nothing like a nice hot shower under the sun or stars! And with so few lights competing with the night sky, on a clear night, you can see so many more stars than you'd expect. Although our cell service with AT&T provides good coverage at the cabin for us (phone and internet/data), we too, would sometimes prefer to completely unplug. Whether it is a walk in the woods of the Bankhead National Forest, a float upstream to the headwaters of Rock Creek, or simply sitting on the deck with a cup of coffee in the cool of the morning listening to the quiet sounds of nature, it is always where we go to relax and recharge.
