A very negative experience....strongly not recommended.

We were robbed of $3,000 worth of possessions on our first full day in this home. The fact that the burglar(s) entered by means of a previously cut window grating, and that both the owner and caretaker knew of this lapse in security without doing anything about it, or notifying us, made them liable for this incident. The owner refused to enter into conversation about compensation for our losses and was in general a poor communicator. The owner and caretaker had differing stories about why the window grate had been previously removed which leads to increased suspicion about the incident.... To further point to the owners responsibility in the matter, both the owner and caretaker shared after this incident that the property has been subject to similar break-ins and robberies in the past.

If this is not enough to give you caution....

The cleaning of the home had not been completed when we arrived at the home at approximately 1pm despite their knowing our arrival date and the home not being rented for several months. There is no internet service as advertised. The washer was broken and the air conditioners did not work very well. The fridge does not keep food cold enough resulting in rapid spoilage and the toilet was leaking water, filling the bathroom when we arrived. In addition there were not adequate towels provided in the home as promised and the home was stripped bare of all basic amenities, i.e., toilet paper, coffee filters, and basic staples like spices, salt and sugar. As a word of caution, the drive up to the property is on an extemely steep dirt road which becomes muddy and very slick with rain. We slid out of control down the road following a rainstorm, with the antilock brake mechanism kicking in, fortunately coming to a stop just before sliding into the highway.

A final item of concern is that the owner asked us to make payments to him outside this site. With a deposit made by check and then carrying the remainder in cash to CR to pay the caretaker. We would never do that again since it put us at risk of robbery of that extra cash.

Owner's Response: Sadly, this burglary did occur but not in the manner that was told by the renters. I was unaware of the bars not being welded in place on the window in question. This is was a miscommunication via email with the renters and myself. The property manager and I only became aware of the window after the burglary occurred and a police investigation. This window was welded shortly after the incident. This home has been burglarized twice in 16 years prior to December 2016. The last burglary was 4.5 years ago, after that incident steel bars were welded to all windows and doors. There has not been a burglary since the bars were installed until now. Unfortunately, the welder had missed the window. In many conversations with renters I explained that neither myself or caretaker were aware of the bar not being welded in place. This window had NOT been previously cut in a burglary. NO burglary had occurred through this window after steel bars were placed until now. The renters decided to vacate this property and I refunded their money minus the cleaning expenses ($75.00.) Unfortunately, like many places in the world homeowners, renters and local police in Costa Rica have an issue with burglary. Valuables should be kept out of sight, especially when leaving the property. Internet is available through ICE with a data card as explained in listing. There is no wifi on the property. There are two towels per person. It is up to renters to buy 'basic amenities.' As detailed on site a 4x4 is recommended, the driveway is steep. The toilet was fixed within a few hours of arrival. The refrigerator has since been replaced. The property manager will demonstrate dial on washer to renters if needed, it is not broken. There are AC units in all three bedrooms, for bedroom use only, shut doors as these units are not meant to cool the entire house. I have accepted payment via personal check for 16 years with no complaints for security deposit. The balance is given to property manager upon arrival. As with previous renters, I will email once check is received and deposited.

Week stay on amazing property

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Casa de Suenos was a great experience. We drove from the the airport and stayed near Jaco for a week. We then drove south for about an hour and easily found Dominical and met up with the property manager who took us to the house. We were very happy to see that the house had such an incredible view and was also very private. We spent a lot of time on the large porch enjoying the sunsets and lighting shows. We came during the rainy season so some nights had some Tstorms but overall it was pretty dry all day. The house was only a few minutes drive to town and any number of beach access points. We felt like we had our own private piece of paradise as there wasn't anyone else around to make noise. Some of the places to stay in town were very close to other hotels/hostels/homes and seemed more noisy. We could not have asked for a more perfect place to explore some of Costa Rica's best sites.

Wonderful 20th anniversary trip

  • 5 of 5

This was a beautiful and spacious house- nice kitchen, comfortable beds and we loved the huge tile showers. Drop dead views and a really pretty yard, filled with flowering plants, interesting birds and ripe coconuts! It was a lot of fun driving up the steep entrance road and dropping sharply down into the covered car park- where big iguanas were sunning every day. The location in Dominical was great- close to everything, and Allen and Misty told us where everything was- the bank, grocery ( and liquor!) store, and some cool local attractions like Ventanos and Whale Tail. We really appreciated the tropical flowers, fruit, and ready- to- drink pepitas (sp?) in the house when we arrived. Beaches are close by car, but we had so much to do in this area we didn't spend nearly as much time at the beach as we expected. Had a great time with Allen and George on a fishing and snorkeling tour- if we had more time we would have done that again. A very enjoyable drive from San Jose and easy to find. First time in CR, can't wait to go back!

Dream Vacation

  • 4 of 5

Beautiful home. Very clean and comfortable with an outstanding view of the ocean. The bedrooms were spacious, the bathrooms clean, the veranda excellent. A 4 wheel drive vehicle is a definite necessity if you rent this house, the drive up to it is steep and unpaved. Loose gravel makes it dangerous to walk on, especially if you are over 60. The beach is close, however there is no easy way to get to it from the house. My one complaint with this rental is that the caretakers, Allen and Misty, were not very informative. We were handed the keys upon arrival and that is it. We did have a problem with the water being cut off, and Allen did respond to that, doing a temporary fix and the next day finding the problem and correcting it (loose wire to the pump). On the first night, two of us woke up to find water on the bedroom floor. The AC units in the bedroom had overflowed. One of our party found a length of plastic hose and ran the water flow out his bedroom window. In the two other bedrooms we had to get up in the middle of the night and empty the water jugs. I think maybe the caretakers could have forewarned us or explained the proper operation of the AC units. All 3 bedrooms had the same settings on the AC unit. I don't think I would stay there again.

Awesome time!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I just spent the last two weeks in Dominical and we had a great time. The place has a beautiful view, a nice open concept with three roomy bedrooms and a large front porch with hamacs facing the Ocean; where we enjoyed playing cards and watching the surf after a day at the beach. Bill, the owner, was very helpful as well as his caretakers Allen and Misty who were most welcoming. Dominical felt safe and friendly, good food ( coffee and fresh fruits) and amazing surf. Dont miss the opportunity to go fishing with Allen and horse back riding to the water fall near by Dominical. Thanks Bill we are looking forward to go back next year.

Girls Get Away to C.R.

  • 5 of 5

My 4 girlfriends and I wanted to spent our last college spring break together visiting the ‘real’ C.R. We rented a car and enjoyed a week in the sun. The house was comfortable and the fridge kept our beer & margarita mix nice and cold. We followed the listing description & rented an SUV which was a must for the driveway. The locals are friendly and the restaurants and bars were a good time (dancing, good food and drinks). Best part was the morning walk down to the beach with our books & cooler. Beach was a little rough for us but we loved lounging in the tidal pools. Couldn’t ask for better pictures from our trip. Overall great time.
