About John Gabaldon

I am a personal chef and a world traveler who loves escaping to the mountains for kayaking and hiking in the national forest which is a few houses away from my beautiful cabin. I also love restoring places and antiquing and put my soul and heart into this cabin.

John Gabaldon purchased this cabin in 2012

Why John Gabaldon chose Sugarloaf

I purchased this cabin here because it's so close to the national forest and only two 1/2 hours away from Los Angeles and Orange County area so it's a great getaway to the lake in the spring/summer for kayaking or biking and hiking and fall and in the winter there's skiing/snowboarding, .

What makes this cabin unique

It's very quiet, nestled in the mountains. Hardwood and tiled floors all remodeled with stainless steel appliances, wifi, HDTV and bluray player w/Netflix too. Swedish fireplace and outdoor firepit and BBQ. Beautiful bluejays and hummingbirds flock to the landscaped large 5000 feet yard in the spring/summer that you can enjoy. Close to ski slopes, lake and walking distance to national forest. Very close to tennis courts, basketball courts, childrens and skate parks and general store too.

A Great Way to Spend Some Summer Days

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was cute, and everything was impeccable. It was easy to drive down to the lake where there are lots of places to shop and eat, along with many other activities. John provided lots of information about the area. The best part for me was the close proximity of the cabin to the national forest -- just a few minutes walk away. I enjoyed hiking on the trails and also walking in the neighborhood. I was surprised how friendly everyone was that I happened to meet along the way. All in all, a very pleasant stay.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much. It was such a pleasure to have you as my guests. You were so kind, easy to communicate with and left the place in great condition. I'm glad you got to enjoy the hiking that's walkable from the cabin. Hope you will come back in the fall to see the leaves change colors or the winter to see some snow on the ground and use the fireplace in the cabin!

Cozy Cabin

  • 4 of 5

Wonderful, cozy cabin that was great for our family of four. Loved the quiet location, which is just down the street from the National Forest, perfect for snow play. The owner John is extremely helpful, thorough, and has detailed instructions for renters throughout the cabin. We would definitely be back.

A perfect getaway

  • 5 of 5

John kept me updated on the weather and gave us info as to were to get wood, food, and other entertainment around this cute cabin. Super clean and quite area. Kitchen was big and the living room was perfect to have everyone around to enjoy some movies. The rooms were nice and comfy. I would highly recommend this cabin if you like some peace. Not to far from the grocery store or food places. Had a great time!

Cozy, clean and comfy cabin for us and our dog

  • 5 of 5

Our big bear trip consisted of me, the lady and our pup. This cabin has a nice fenced backyard so the dog could roam around freely. The cabin itself was clean, with ample utilities for cooking and a nice fireplace. Everything in the cabin was easy to use as instructions were placed by anything that was usable (tv, cable box, fireplace etc) so we had no frustrating "how do we use this?" Style problems. Location itself was close to the lake and town area. John (the owner of property) also sends you an email with gives plenty of directions and locations in the area which was very helpful when looking for shops etc.

we would diffently stay at this cabin again. Defiantly recommended if you are looking for a place to bring your pup to big bear or even if you need a cozy place to stay .
