Overview

About the property

Castle, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

Newly refurbished apartment in the Stronghold of Bonnieux (at the time of Avignon popes) situated in the remparts of Bonnieux. This is a unique place with 12th century vaults and walls made with old Provence stones. The whole place has been restored with ancient materials and has retained its original features including exposed beams and tiled floors. The whole apartment has an astonishing view on the Luberon.

Temperature is ideal any time of year thanks to 2 meter-thick walls.

Car parking is very easy, just in front of the entrance.

Large Terrace with chairs and table to enjoy summer late sunset and breathtaking landscape.

Very calm place, ideal to enjoy pleasures of the Luberon, getting some rest, sightseeing of the several perched villages of the Luberon (Lacoste, Roussillon, Gordes, Menerbes... are all at maximum 15 minutes by car).

The apartment is within a 5-minute walk to a bakery, butcher, grocery as well as typical quaint Provençal stores and antique shops.

There are lots of classical music concerts you can enjoy in Bonnieux and the other villages.

Bonnieux also offers casual and top-of-the-line restaurants which are also within a walking distance of 5 minutes.

There is no such rental in the Luberon : what we offer here is a very unique way of living in an historic, authentic and preserved place.

And we will love to share it with you, since we welcome you personally on your arrival.

About Historical Apartment

I am a French student in medicine, and my mother a former doctor too, passioned by the restoration of our house, history, art, music, nature and by the joy of making people discover the place we love, welcoming and sharing our experience and passion with people who have made the effort to come and discover our country.

Historical Apartment purchased this castle in 1970

Why Historical Apartment chose Bonnieux

My mother and I have a strong passion of the place, discovered by our parents and grand parents 40 years ago who have bought it as ruins and have put all their strengths in its restoration. This is a very special place of memory for us, a part of our history. Do not hesitate to ask us more about this history, this is a part of ourselves.

What makes this castle unique

We like decorating, imagining, restorate the place. Enjoying the terrace and its calm. Seeing all our welcoming friends. We like music very much and go very often to lots of the concerts that this place offer in summer (Orange, piano international festival in La Roque D'antheron, Opera Festival in Aix en Provence...). We particularly love the calm of the place and all what it stands for in terms of remembrance and love of our family. This is a kind of shelter for us, since we live the major part of the year in Marseille, a one-million-inhabitant city on the Mediterranean shores.

Historic Provence experience

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 5 days here with our 6-year old twins and had a very rich experience: the historical feel of the house with a great view, cozy village and surroundings to explore, lovely Friday market. Staying in this house really enhanced our experience of Provence. Visitors interested in staying this house should be mindful that this is a 12th century house and the experience is on the rustic side. The house has all amenities, but they are on the basic side. This worked well for us, but some reviewers seemed to have different expectations. We will treasure our family memories and our time together in this house.

Amazing views in an incredible setting

  • 5 of 5

This property turned out way more than I was expecting. It's a very large apartment that just seems to go on forever filled with antiques and beautiful peices of ornaments, lamps, artwork and I just loved the chandeliers. We visited in June and it was very hot with outside temperature in the mid 30's but when we came back to the accommodation it was pleasantly cool inside. The views from every window are magnificent, I could not get enough of it and we so enjoyed eating a late supper or breakfast on the private balcony. The stone walls and architecture are beautiful, your imagination runs riot with what they must have seen over the centuries. It's true that the cooking facilities are basic and it lacks in some necessities like tea towels and cloths but it has a full size fridge/freezer that actually works, the first one in France we have found and it has all the cutlery and crockery you need. Our host was very friendly and helpful, showing us around and giving us a bit of history on the property. It was much larger than expected, the photos do not do it justice. Bonnieux is a lovely old town with modern restaurants & shops and close by to lots of other famous and equally beautiful perched villages. The parking can be a bit exciting, make sure you have a small car as the streets are very narrow and steep. I highly recommend this property if you are looking for something different & out of the ordinary with a truely authentic taste of what living in a castle was like but with modern conveniences. This was the highlight of our trip.

Incredible 12th century building!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our time spent in Bonnieux at the La Salle De Garde. Michelle was an excellent hostess whom we met upon arrival and she and her little dog accompanied us to our lodging just down the road. Bonnieux is a beautiful hilltop town in Provence. The property is a 12th century building and we occupied the lodging with a view balcony. We enjoyed sitting on the terrace and eating dinner while looking out over the countryside. The village was easy to walk around and there were many great places to eat close by. We stayed there in July and although it doesn't have air-conditioning, the thick stone walls keep the inside cool. The rooms we had were large and clean with everything we needed. We couldn't figure out how to work the stove, but we didn't end up contacting Michelle because we decided to eat light meals that didn't require cooking. I'm sure had we contacted her, she would have solved the problem for us. Driving through the local villages was beautiful and something we really enjoyed. The property was full of unique things--not least of which was the giant skeleton key used to unlock the front door! Very memorable. I have shown all of our friends pictures from this extremely interesting property. If you are interested in spending time outside of typical hotels and travel lodges, we highly recommend this property! We certainly look forward to visiting again some time.

Truly Unique Experience

  • 4 of 5

We had wanted to stay in a historic accommodation somewhere in Provence to see lavender on our trip. This place definitely fit the bill and met our expectations. Very spacious and wonderful views. It was fairly windy when we were on the terrace so we mostly enjoyed the views from the windows. It is a historic building so don't expect the floors to be perfectly level or free of dust and occasional harmless bugs. The only downside was we couldn't find anyone at the meeting point but fortunately a local helped us get to the apartment.

Unique and Historic, great location. Lacking in some basic amenities and general maintenance.

  • 3 of 5

My parents and I stayed in this property for three nights. We loved the location in the village (was an easy walk to cafes and restaurants), the stunning views and the historic nature of the apartment. The lovely Michele met us when we arrived to give us the keys, a brief tour and a bit of the history of the building. It's a huge place with a lot of common areas. We were very happy to base out of Bonnieux for our exploration of the area, since it's an easy drive to several of the other villages, has enough dining options to offer for a few days visit, and has an authentic, local nature.

We would definitely recommend this property to more self-reliant , independent people who are willing to trade some creature comforts for a special experience.

The master bedroom has french doors opening up to a pretty terrace with gorgeous views. The bed in that room was firm and comfortable. The second bedroom is in a vault-like room, very cool (beware there is no door unto adjacent common room, only a curtain), but the mattress was terrible. It had some kind of plastic layer which made me sweat all night. Most of the pillows in the apartment were lumpy and thin. There is a small kitchen with the basics you need to make coffee, but lacking in wine glasses.

The bathroom is spacious, takes some time between uses for the hot water heater to catch up. No amenities (soap, shampoo, etc) are provided except for a hair dryer. For three of us, we were given only one towel each for the duration of the stay, and no wash cloths. The hand held shower head does not have a place to attach on the wall. The apartment is a bit chilly, so if you're there during a cooler time of year you'll want to have some long sweat pants, socks, and sweater in the mornings and evenings.

The owner should be aware that a bit more attention to detail could make the apartment a much higher-end experience. For example: seven light bulbs out in the master bedroom, only half a roll of toilet paper in the place (we bought our own at the little market in town and left several extra rolls for the next guest). More attention needs to be paid to cleaning between stays, especially when it comes to sweeping the stone floors. Wine glasses, napkins, basic cleaning supplies and more towels are needed. A couch or comfortable chairs in the living room would be a nice touch. Also, there is no internet in the apartment. This should be remedied asap. With a little work and TLC this place could be truly amazing
