About the property

Looking to explore the Chianti region of Tuscany with all the comforts of home and more? This newly refurbished accommodation (all on one level!) in a Tuscany villa has it all! The owner, who lives on the estate in the family villa, is American and she's furnished the villa in Tuscany to American tastes. So relax or dine on the covered terrace, hike through the woods across the country lane, explore Certaldo Alto with its Pretorio Palace, or take a day trip to Florence and beyond! There is another large apartment on the lower level, as well as Villa Sella, right next door (with its own pool), and Villa Certaldo, near the owner’s villa.

The home comprises the upper level of a newly renovated canteen constructed in 1939 by the grandmother of the current owner of the estate. The building was used for wine production for only a few years until the breakout of WWII at which time it served as a safe hiding place for those desperately attempting to avoid capture by the Nazi forces. There is still a hand dug WWII hideout located approximately 30 yards from La Solaia. The home is located on the same estate as Villa Sella and Villa Certaldo, therefore comprises the same property description (animal reserve, cultivated acreage) as these two properties. The structure contains two rental properties, each identical in size and layout. La Solaia is on the upper level; however, its entrance is ground level since it nestles against the hillside. There are no stairs in the home, other than the single step up to enter the home from its private terrace. Thus, it is a very comfortable home for families with children or guests with mobility challenges.

The home is reached from the parking area located just a few meters from the private front yard. There is a private fenced in garden (250 sq m/2700 sq ft) in front of the home. The private covered terrace (12 sq m/130 sq ft) furnished with dining table and chairs, comprises the entrance to the home. All floor covering inside the home and the loggia are Terra Cotta brick. There is an arched shaped double door glass entrance to living room from terrace.

Note: All furnishings and appliances unless otherwise indicated are new (2012).

Ground Floor (All Rooms): Throughout the home the ceilings are constructed with brick inlaid on large wooden beams typical of Tuscany. The walls are white and all rooms have ceiling fans for guest comfort. The table lamps are handmade and decorated ceramic. The wall fixtures are brass. The entire home is covered with wireless internet for guest use 24/7 at no additional cost. All bathrooms are luminous and each has window openings.

Living Room, Dining Room/Kitchen: The front double door entrance leads directly to the living room (25 sq m/270 sq ft) which is comfortably furnished with two large sofas (one is a sofa bed suitable for one, with a 120 cm mattress) and easy chair offering guests a large conversational area with coffee table and flat screen satellite television entertainment. The wood burning fireplace provides a cozy atmosphere. The writing desk offers a portable internet tablet for guest use. The series of 12 hand painted lithographs depicting colorful plants and herbs brings the feel of the countryside into the home. A large arched opening joins the living room with the kitchen/dining room (25 sq m/270 sq ft). The kitchen island provides a spacious and functional food preparation space as it overlooks both the dining and living rooms. Guests have a microwave, coffee maker, refrigerator, dishwasher, electric ceramic glass cook top area and electric oven as well as all standard kitchen equipment and utensils. All kitchen appliances and home accessories including pots, pans, plates, and utensils are new (2012). The open dining area offers a large table with seating for 8 persons. There is an antique “madia” or bread cabinet for storage. 10 colorful hand painted lithographs adorning the walls depict various professions from the 1600’s. The in-home laundry room (5 sq m/54 sq ft) houses the washing machine and provides a storage area. An arched corridor (5 sqm/54 sqft) with wood beamed ceiling provides entrance to the wooden double doors leading to the master suite.

First Bedroom: (19 sqm/200 sqft) is light and airy with four windows on the three outer walls overlooks the countryside and contains a queen size bed, two night tables, an armadio, and writing desk with chair. Six hand colored lithographs depict the various counties in England, and an original drawing, Milan 1845, illustrates major nations and their populations. The suite includes a private bathroom (5 sq m/54 sq ft) with double sink, WC, bidet, and shower/tub with sliding glass doors and wall mounted removable shower head.

Second Bedroom: (14 sq m/150 sq ft) has a queen size bed, two night tables, an armadio, and writing desk with chair. The room has three windows overlooking the countryside. Hand painted lithographs depicting English military adorn the room as do prints of Napoleon’s battles. The private en-suite bathroom (4 sq m/43 sq ft) has a double sink, WC, bidet, and shower/tub with glass sliding doors and wall mounted removable shower head.

Third Bedroom: (14 sq m/150 sq ft) has three windows and offers a queen size bed, two night tables, an armadio, and writing desk with chair. Original hand painted lithographs dated 1815 adorn the room as does an original topographic drawing from Sicily, 1892. The third bathroom offering double sink, WC, bidet, and shower stall with wall mounted removable shower head is conveniently located adjacent to this bedroom and is also easily accessed from the living room.

Overall:

Wonderful property. So serene and scenic. Easy to unwind and relax yet close to many exciting places to visit

Enjoyed Most:

The location was perfect. When on the property, you can enjoy the beautiful countryside. But it is easy to access the town, the vineyards and other places to visit. The best of all worlds.

Enjoyed Least:

There is nothing that we can suggest that was not perfect

Surrounding Area:

Many wonderful towns and vineyards easily accessible from the property

Nearby Events or Locales:

Certaldo. You need to drive there

Tips or Restaurants:

Bring your bathing suit so you can just sit at the pool. The list of restaurants in the book provided by the owner directed us to some great meals. Every one was better than the previous one so just follow her suggestions.

Directions:

Used GPS and it brought us right to the property

Overall:

Good quiet location, comfortable beds, well appointed house and gracious host. Glad it had a washing machine, dryer and clothes line.

Enjoyed Most:

I liked that it accommodated three couples with complete privacy. Each of bedrooms had a private full bath to call our own.

Enjoyed Least:

Garbage sorting was confusing.

Surrounding Area:

It was located within short to medium distances to areas/towns we wanted to visit. Country feel, room to walk about.

Nearby Events or Locales:

Certaldo. It was not within walking distance but only four miles away.

Tips or Restaurants:

A suggested list is provided on the website for this rental. It is very important to remember to bring your own bar soap, shampoo, shower gel, etc. It is not provided. Easy enough to buy in town.

Directions:

GPS did not seem to recognize the coordinates given. We had our host come into town and we followed her to the rental.

Check In Out:

Be prepared with the exact amount of Euros for deposit, cleaning fee and taxes and a copy of your passport and it will work very smoothly.

  • 5 of 5

Overall:

A wonderful location in the country within easy distance of some fantastic hilltop towns, Florence, and Siena. The views of the surrounding hillsides, vineyards, and groves was fantastic. The villa is very nicely laid out, comfortable, and has all of the modern amenities.

Enjoyed Most:

Location. A great spot to plan day trips in any direction.

Enjoyed Least:

There was an issue with getting the heat turned on, but Elizabeth was very gracious and made up for the inconvenience.

Surrounding Area:

All of the hilltop towns in the area are great. San Gimignano, Certaldo, Volterra. Siena is a short drive to the south and Florence is not far to the north. You can even get to Pisa relatively easily. Your own car is a must, though.

Nearby Events or Locales:

Certaldo. Probably too far to walk as it was about a 5 - 10 minute drive depending on the way you go.

Overall:

Very comfortable home. We really got the "feel" of living in Tuscany.

Enjoyed Most:

Great layout of space, comfortable, well designed. Spacious and bright interior unlike some other villas. Convenient location to grocery, train station. Many towns wineries just a short drive away. Elizabeth helpful responded within a day. Nice to have interim cleanings at 15 euro/hr, which Elizabeth set up for us. Nice to have American owner who understands American creature comforts (screens on windows, American coffee maker). Comfortable bed and pillows.

Enjoyed Least:

Bit noisy. Lots of traffic outside our window as it was harvest. Pictures of villa show some view but trees are overgrown and obstruct the view. Limited satellite channels.

Surrounding Area:

Very convenient location which is a big plus for daily excursions. Handy pizza restaurant plus lots of small restaurants to explore. Loved waking to gunshots of pheasant hunters, rooster crowing watching the harvest of the grapes. Lovely rural setting but not too far from town.

Nearby Events or Locales:

Certaldo. Too far to walk into town but very short drive. Walking on road should be done cautiously. San Gimignano about 15 minute drive away.

Tips or Restaurants:

I would bring mosquito spray, a kitchen knife, corkscrew as a backup, ziplock bags, garbage bags. I brought bar soap, laundry & dishwasher pods, a small amount of dishwashing liquid, coffee filters, and coffee. Coop nearby has most anything you need but depending on how long you are staying, anything you buy, you may be leaving behind (not necessarily for next guest either). We had nothing to start with but a small amount of laundry dish soap, each bath had a roll of toilet paper, and a partial roll of paper towels in the kitchen. We left behind quite a bit of supplies after 3 weeks there. Elizabeth had a list of nearby recommendations definitely worth a try.

Directions:

With GPS, it was easy enough, plus I had done my Google Maps research (aerial, google drive to turn off at Bar 429).

Overall:

This was an exceptional experience. The villa is over 400 years old and was completely renovated by the architect owner. His wife Elizabeth is the hostess and is very welcoming and helpful with recommendations for local restaurants and sites.

Enjoyed Most:

Very quiet and secluded but close to town.

Surrounding Area:

Yes, very authentic Tuscany. Winding roads, easy train ride to Florence. And close to other Tuscan towns and cities.

Nearby Events or Locales:

The nearest town is Certaldo, about 6km.

Tips or Restaurants:

Bring a good GPS. The roads are really confusing. Elizabeth has a list of great restaurants and local eateries.

Directions:

GPS, GPS, GPS.

Check In Out:

Check in was a non event as was checkout. Elizabeth made the visit a delight.
