About Mary Macropoulou
40 years ago as a young Irish girl I married and lived in Greece for 11 years. I fell in love with the country and its people which has continued over all those years. Being part of an extended Greek family has given me an understanding of Greeks and their customs which is best gained within a family environment. To me Greeks are a fun loving, hospitable and proud people with a passion for their country and customs. This spills over to every aspect of their personal and business lives.
Mary Macropoulou purchased this Villa in 2006
Why Mary Macropoulou chose Aspro
Aspro and the Apokoronas area of Crete reminds me of Greece as it was all those years ago. When I saw the plot back in 2005 - just a field without any detailed plans - I knew it was the place for me. Every time I return to Villa Anna, I can't believe it is mine. Villa Anna with a view of Aspro village and Souda Bay has the best of all worlds - peace and quiet when needed but very near the beach and tavernas at Almyrida. Over the years a lovely community has developed with the other owners in the complex and we have built up friendships and supports not unalike our Greek neighbours. Most of the neighbours are the original buyers who have a shared love of the place which tells it own story.
What makes this Villa unique
The reviews from former holidaymakers are proof that Villa Anna is all that it promises to be. Many holidaymakers are repeat customers and appreciate that I have tried to anticipate their needs. So over the years I have improved the service and added on extras like ceiling fans in addition to air conditioning, mosquito screens in bedrooms and beach towels - less baggage costs for you.

Home from home
Mary provides a wonderful home that has everything you could possibly need. We arrived late in the evening and found provisions to have a cup of tea and breakfast in the morning which was greatly appreciated! The house is lovely and very well equipped with everything from cleaning materials to a small library of books and DVD's. It is situated in a perfect spot to view the amazing sunsets over Suda bay and is close to the beautiful villages of Almyrida and Vamos which offer tavernas serving good food. The house is very clean and well maintained, Derek and Pam provided clean linen mid way through the week which is a service we have not had in any of the other villas we have stayed in. Thank you Mary for a lovely week from Debbie and George.
10 days in Villa Anna
We very much enjoyed our 10 days based at Villa Anna. The owner, Mary was very friendly and helpful with arrangements. The house is very well kept and clean and in a very good location up the hill from Almyrida and in the Cretan countryside. It was great to breakfast on the veranda every morning and sit out in the evening seeing the sun set beyond the Akrotiri peninsula and the stars come out. Having the very clean pool to cool off in was another good bonus.
Pam and Derick turned up regularly to keep the pool and properties up to scratch and were very friendly and helpful.
We walked into Almyrida and back a couple of times for evening meals - it's a stiff climb back up into Aspro. We also found a book of local walks (try in the Vamos tourist centre) including several that we could start from Aspro or Almyrida.
All in all a very good holiday and a very good base.
Couldn't be faulted!
Excellent driving instructions to villa and welcome pack much appreciated late on a Sunday evening. House immaculately clean on arrival, and kept that way for the duration of our two week stay, and equipped with everything you could possibly need. The combination of aircon and overhead ceiling fans in the bedrooms was very welcome. The position of Villa Anna on the small development gave us welcome privacy and we even got used to the noise of the cicadas after a couple of days. We enjoyed choosing where to eat in one of the numerous restaurants in the area every evening . Excellent cheese pies at Lagos in Almyrida (Mama makes them) and even more so at Mavouras in Vamos, made with flatbread (recipe from Mama's home village). We also discovered honey raki - very nice! We found a book in the house "Crete on the Road" which made our holiday even more enjoyable by directing us to mountain roads, chapels, tavernas & spectacular views we probably would not have found on our own. Our communication with Mary was very helpful and we can highly recommend Villa Anna and intend to visit again soon.
Hi Heather and David, I'm delighted you have booked again for 2015. Crete is famous in spring for its wild flowers and makes for some wonderful photos. Aptera is especially beautiful then with a riot of flowers, enhansed by the sea on one side and the White Mountains still covered in snow. Mary
Villa Anna 2012
We have spent our last 6 summer holidays in Almirida staying close to the beach and have loved it there so we were interested and excited to be staying a little way back from the sea in Aspro. We needed a car of course but the drive is only 5 minutes and then you find yourself in a wonderful, peaceful location with olive groves and fantastic views. Having the car the whole time also meant we could really explore the area and go to different beaches and tavernas, which we loved.
Villa Anna is a real treat, it just feels loved and cared for and is well stocked with everything you need, including a dishwasher!! Derick and Pam looked after us with linen changes and they were helpful and friendly. The other people on site were really friendly too and we even had a communal bbq one evening which was fun, however because of the way the villas are arranged the front of Villa Anna is completely private and you can sit on the patio or terrace and not know anyone else is there. My favourite time of day was first thing in the morning sitting on the patio gazing at the views with a cup of tea and having the smell of jasmine wafting over. Oh and my other favourite time of day was sitting on the terrace watching the spectacular sunsets with a glass or two of rose, it really was heaven.
I can't recommend Villa Anna enough. The communication with Mary the owner was fantastic and from start to finish everything went smoothly. Can't wait to go back!!
Hello Sharon, I delighted you and your family enjoyed Villa Anna so much that you have already booked for next summer. I think that is the best recommendation of all. Mary
Villa Anna July 2012
Just returned from 12 days at Villa Anna, and what can we say that hasn't already been said?
Villa Anna is in a beautiful location set in a small development of 8 similar villas sharing two pools, but to be honest, most of the time we didn't know there was anyone else there, and had the pool to ourselves. The location was just what we wanted, just 5 minutes (by car) out of a small town with all the facilities required, so far enough away for peace and quiet, but close enough for the convenience of tavernas and shops within a stone's throw.
The layout of the villa and patio is such that even though there are other villas and people around, you can enjoy the privacy of your own patio with both shaded and sunny areas enjoying views across Souda bay.
The villa is perfectly maintained, and is equipped more like a home than a holiday letting. The service provided by Derick and Pam including cleaning and fresh linen twice a week is first class, and the fact that all towels including beach/pool towels were provided made a real difference when faced with Ryanairs luggage charges!
There's a great selection of bars and restaurants in Almyrida and Kalives all with reasonable prices, especially when compared to Spain where we've holidayed over the past few years, but we found that tavernas tended to be better value the further inland and uphill you travel, Vamos being a good example. Also if you're planning on using the BBQ, make sure you visit John the English butcher in Vamos in the morning for the best selection of meats in the area.
All in all a fantastic holiday, in a beautiful villa in a perfect location.
Thanks Mary, we hope to be back!
Hello Stuart, Thanks for the great review and useful suggestions on eating out and recommending the English butcher in Vamos for BBQ - his meat is always of the highest quality. I hope you will holiday again in Villa Anna - I have been lucky to have quite a bit of repeat business which I think is the best recommendation of all. Until the next time. Thanks again. Mary
We have just got back home from Crete having had the most wonderful forthnight staying at Villa Anna in Aspro.
From the first moment when we arrived in the middle of the night after a long flight and drive from Heraklion we felt at home and really appreciated the supplies that had been put in the fridge which meant we could have breakfast without having to rush out and buy everything immediately.
Both Wendy and I really enjoyed the location with the view from the porch at the front of the house especially at sunset being a real plus. Villa Anna felt much more of a loved and cared for home than just another holiday house.
We made good use of the pool although the habit of going to swim in the harbour at Almyryda we have built up over 10 years was hard to break - we enjoy meeting old acquaintances down there - it's not just about the swimming.
The facilities and equipment in the Villa were excellent and really exceeded our expectation - plenty of space downstairs and comfortable beds - the a.c. was only needed for short bursts before bedtime - the weather was never overly hot this year. The dishwasher was a real boon too and having the washing machine meant that we came home with clean clothes and not a pile of dirty stuff.
I noticed that you had a couple of meditarranean gardening books in the lounge - as keen gardeners we were very impressed by your planting scheme around the villa - it would win our prize for the best garden on the site by a country mile! It is amazing how quickly things grow and mature in the warmth and sunshine.
We also made use of Frankie Miles' driving tour guide to make a trip to a restaurant high in the mountains above Chania - the Psichro Pigadi taverna was about 1000 m above sea level with an amazing view over the area. Quite a long drive with all the hairpin bends but worth the trip.
As this was the first time I have booked accommmodation independently of an agency I was delighted that we found your property. I did spend a lot of time researching the various alternatives on offer on several websites. Obviously it helped us in our search that we knew the area quite well but one of thefactors that made me choose Villa Anna were the really positive reviews you had had from previous guests.
Thanks you John and Wendy for your lovely review on Villa Anna. Everybody who stays feels it is a home away from home and treat it as such. I'm always singing the praises of the visitors for the care they take of it.
I'm glad you enjoyed the views and the garden. It is amazing how quickly plants grow and over time I hope the bougainvilleas will spread down the bank to the trees and create a wall of vivid pink. That and the scent of jasmine makes evenings on the patio heaven. I hope you will come back again. Mary
Villa Anna is in beautiful Apokoronas. White Mountains (2453m), snow capped until late spring, provide a dramatic backdrop to its traditional inland villages of Vamos, Gavalochori, Douliana, Plaka and Kokkino Chorio. The area has retained its character and visitors are drawn to the natural beauty, the people and their way of life. Many have become so enchanted with Apokoronas that they have bought homes, which has boosted the tourist facilities in the area.
The seaside resorts of Almyrida (or Almirida) and Kalives are located in Souda Bay. Almyrida once a small fishing village still retains its charm. It is now a thriving seaside resort with traditional tavernas lining its shallow blue flag beach which is ideal for children. Windsurfing and sailing, walking and bike hire are available for active holidays and beach lounger for sun lovers. Mini markets, vegetable shop, baker, patisserie, wine shop and news agency provide all the basics.
Chania, 'most beautiful city on Crete' and Rethymnon are only 30+ minutes away. The famous Minoan site at Knossos is also easily reached by car. The local site of Aptera is a must as its sensitive excavation has retained its authenticity.
