About the property

Estate Property, Main house 3+3, (Sleeps 6), and Guest Cottage 1+1 (Sleeps 4)

A charming and eloquently designed contemporary craftsman home and humble cottage on a secluded estate. With the help of a Feng Shui master, our home has been designed to keep your Chi in tact! This Carmel getaway provides privacy, beauty, and plenty of outdoor spaces, while still being walking distance to the shops and restaurants of downtown. Hiking trails and the Forest Theatre are also just a stones throw away from this special hideaway. Enjoy the peaceful sounds of nature from this one of a kind retreat, backing up to the forested beauty of Carmel's Mission Creek.

This peaceful setting features views of the Carmel Forest, sounds of the babbling Mission Creek, distant crashing waves, and numerous song birds to sooth your spirits. Vaulted ceilings, fireplaces in the master and living room, and a handmade spiral staircase are just a few features that make this home special. This 3 bedroom, 3 bath home is on .6 acre lot in Carmel's Mission Creek area. Stairs from the street / garage level lead down to expansive brick patios and entrance to the main living area: large entry with sitting area around fireplace, expansive living room area with built in window seats for panoramic views of forest and tile and maple wood floors throughout, dining area separated from kitchen over a service bar, kitchen with gas range, refrigerator, and tile counters. One guest bedroom and bath (tub/shower) are also on this level. Upstairs is the master suite with fireplace, balcony, en suite bath with jacuzzi tub and shower over; and third suite with balcony and en suite bath (shower). All 3 bathrooms are elegantly designed and oversized with stone tile floors and counters.

We welcome a maximum number of six guests (including children) in the main house and 2-4 in the 'optional' guest cottage which is located across a cute little bricked breezeway adjacent to the main house.

After a challenging day of shopping, beach-going, golfing, or dining, this special home is perfect for relaxation and recharging for your next day's adventure! Surrounded by the forest and the sounds of nature, this is truly a special place!

There is driveway (on a hill) parking for one normal size SUV vehicle and additional on-street parking 150-200' away on Forest Rd.

Sorry, NO SMOKING and NO PETS (no matter how small or trained).

Note, the cottage will not be rented to other guests and is not available to guests unless the cottage option was booked during the reservation process.

The experience!

Get away in luxury amongst the redwoods and oaks. Picnic in your own private nature sanctuary. Enjoy a monarch butterfly dance. Listen to the distant elephant seal calls or the trickle from babbling creek below. Watch the wildlife pass by. You may see the red fox come out to play. See the moonlight imprint evanescent shadows of oaks onto natures canvas. Ponder a stroll to the ocean. Walk to town for coffee, shopping, Art Gallery strolling, exquisite cuisine,or simply stay in and unwind. Walk out the back door a few steps to the Mission Trails for a Gorgeous Nature Hike. If you are looking to clear your mind, this is the place to do it!

Beautiful quiet home with spacious rooms

  • 5 of 5

This house is a real jewel. It is located at the edge of the mission trail. A great walking loop is down the trail to the Mission, then Santa Lucia to Scenic Rd into town. The house was clean, modern and spacious. Parking is about 100 yes away on the street unless you park on a steep slope in front of the garage- but it was no problem. The patios are big and private, looking over the woods. The house was better than described, making my first rental through VRBO a success. i highly recommend it to anyone.

Great location, very comfortable home

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time at this property. It worked very well for our party of 8. There are a few things about the house that warrant 4/5, and could be easily rectified to make this a 5 star rental. In particular, the kitchen is not very well stocked and made meal preparation a little difficult. Most rentals are like this but we've stayed in a few that have kitchens stocked like at home, and it makes a big difference—an Amazon order of kitchen essentials, as well as stocking up on things like bags and foil would be really nice.

There were two plumbing annoyances that could easily be fixed by the owner: the kitchen faucet is impossible—both getting the pressure and temperature right. And the downstairs toilet was broken the whole time we were there—constantly running, and wouldn't flush without opening the tank lid and messing around in there. Also, the parking is rather atrocious for more than one car. Two of the designated parking spaces are apparently not actually available, according to notes we received from the neighbors.

Owner's Response: Dear Guest(s), We appreciate the review but as a vacation rental homeowner we need to tell the entire story to ensure future guests see a balanced and fair review. Firstly, we try to make sure it's a good fit from the get go and provide as much detail about the property as possible on our VRBO site so please read it all. Also, with all our experience, we find having a few back and forths via email is helpful to ensure a good fit for both parties. Atrocious parking! We do only have one spot for one vehicle (not two) in front of our garage as called out in detail on our VRBO site. It's not hidden but front and center in the main description. As for other available parking spaces, we share them with our neighborhood. These other spaces are illustrated in an extremely detailed property map designating where these spaces are and are not. This map is sent with arrival package email and is on display in home. We try to set expectations every step of the way. We deeply regret that you had a running toilet. It happens and for these matters we have an on-call caretaker? The phone number is made available to guests to call or text. As for the kitchen, its subjective and for big Monterey events we've hosted bakers whom loved our little quaint kitchen but we don't expect it to be perfect for all and we're very open to taking advice such as add foil. But it has utensils for nearly everything we can think of and then some. Saying we need to go to Amazon and get the essentials is really exaggerating. As a vacation rental homeowner, we take pride in making our home as perfect as possible for guests so we'll continue to extract the positive and move forward with lessons learned.

lovely space

  • 4 of 5

The house was large enough for all 6 of us to feel comfortable. I appreciated that each bedroom had its own bathroom.

The house is situated on a beautiful property with many patios backing up a forest. We walked on the Mission trail each morning!

The television set was confusing to use- directions posted by the set weren't easy to follow.

Owner's Response: Dave thanks for the review and sorry for your TV stress. For those of you that read this review. The TV is a modern day triumph of engineering. There's too many options on remotes now-a-day which makes them look more like video game controllers (they integrate Sat TV, DVD, normal TV, and ROKU). It can be confusing but we have a caretaker with a phone number that you can call or even text to ease your TV stress. The important thing that is common to all remotes is you have to tell the controller which device (SAT TV, Reg TV, DVD, ROKU you want to talk to.

Really wonderful home!

  • 4 of 5

Fantastic communication with owner and care giver. The home and grounds are totally amazing. I will be back! There are 2 drawbacks, however. The home may not be appropriate for seniors. You must be able to walk up and down spiral stairs in the house and brick stairs outside the home. Additionally parking in the driveway is on a very steep incline. Love the grounds!!!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review. It makes us so happy when people have a good time. Clarification: The main house has three entries: Two at the ground level and one at the 2nd level. The floor plan for the main house has two bedrooms on the second floor and one bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor along with kitchen, living and dinning rooms. My senior parents would stay on the ground floor and never have to use the spiral stairs. Also, we offer a cottage as a option which also has no stairs. But we agree with the reviewer that it's not a place for an impaired walker. It's a very beautiful but hilling area. Walking to town is close but again it's hilly.

Charming woodsy retreat.

  • 5 of 5

We were two families who shared the house for a Thanksgiving holiday who loved this place. The house is spacious and comfortable and very tastefully adorned with art and artifacts of world travel. There is a terrific glass and wood dining table, Calligaris from Italy, that looks small in the photos but expands to easily seat 8. Nice kitchen with plenty of pots and pans and dishes for cooking and dining, which we did except for one dinner out to Il Tegamino in town, about a half mile away. The 3 bedrooms are nice, each with bathroom. The king suite has gas fireplace, large bathroom, great window views into the woods, and tons of space. Living space in with very cool recessed rim lighting and unique oval and round windows, a fireplace, and big screen TV with satelite and wifi. The house feels like a home which flows outdoors to the spacious grounds, and you feel private and privileged. The mission trail is on Mission Creek which runs (well, trickles) through the back yard and goes down the old mission passing some coastal redwoods. Hiked all of Point Lobos one day, drove and hiked Big Sur the next, went to the Aquarium another day, and generally got a good feel of the area. Highly recommend this home. Loved our stay.

The directions are easy if you follow them and the steep driveway is no problem if you back down to it. It was a wet road on arrival and I found headfirst required me to back out, up hill, with no weight on rear wheels and I spun out a bit. Backing down allows you to drive out forward and zero problem. A second car does need to park on the street at the end of the block, but it is clearly necessary and no big deal.

Very nice setting

  • 4 of 5

The setting is really unique for being so close to downtown Carmel; quite tranquil. Our overall impression of the house was a bit mixed. The kitchen could use some updating, like a dishwasher and some basic needs for those who like to prepare meals. We couldn't find a bread knife or baking pans but there were three coffee makers (!). It would also be nice to have extra paper towels and garbage bags; we bought more at the store. The TV in the family room has a green line going down the center, indicating that it's probably going out. If you are going to charge people for linens, a mandatory separate insurance policy, and a cleaning charge, you should build those into the quoted price; otherwise any price comparison isn't equitable. It should be advertised as a 3 bedroom 3 bath for the minimum per night, since the 1 bedroom 1 bath cottage is an additional charge. All the mattresses are very firm, noisy beds; every mattress squeaked (springs?) with the slightest movement. Our family did enjoy our stay, but since it appears that Steve wants to know about his place, we felt it was appropriate that he know about the items we have noted.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the feedback. We do like to hear different points view since it helps us as hosts keep a balanced perspective on guest's expectations. 1)The kitchen is dated and lacks some basic essentials (i.e. no bread knife) The kitchen is quaint and charming to fit in with the motif of the home. I would consider it to be a medium size kitchen and it's home to almost everything I can imagine (I'm not a chef) for a kitchen with plenty of cutting utensils. But indeed the bread knife was missing and we'll need to replace it. As for trash bags, and things you think should be present we do offer our guests our caretaker's number. I believe the caretaker was called by this guest and the caretaker stopped by to address their needs. Now for the uncomfortable noisy beds. All of them are high-end mattresses and frames. I went and tested myself after reading this review to see if bed noise was excessive. I didn't notice anything but it's somewhat subjective. Although, we do have solid maple wood floors in two of the rooms so if there's significant movement on the bed it will translate to the floor! Lastly, our beautiful big plasma TV just needed to have the picture contrast setting adjusted which should have been a call to the caretaker. We'll continue to strive for perfection but home rentals are not for everyone and they're certainly not hotels.
