About Cliff Hood

We live nearby in Helen, Georgia and own this property as well as another adjacent house that we rent through VRBO.

Cliff Hood purchased this lodge in 2008

Why Cliff Hood chose Lake Chatuge

We really enjoy mountain lakes, particularly Lake Chatuge and the North Carolina side of the lake. There is a lot of TVA and National Forest with great mountain views. There are many very good restaurants and activities in the area and some are available via the lake. This property sits on 2 & 1/2 acres with a large lawn area.

What makes this lodge unique

We enjoy the Elf Community and having lake access and the pontoon boat is great for cruising around beautiful Lake Chatuge.

Spectacular

  • 5 of 5

The Elf School was a great place to stay we enjoyed everything about it, our grandchildren had a wonderful time running through the house and grounds while the adults watched from the grand porch. Swimming all day off the Pontoon boat and Sunset cruises in the evening was the highlight of each day. Billiards at night in the family room added to more fun memories to last a life time. I highly recommend the Elf School it was truly a great vacation.

Charming Historic Property

  • 5 of 5

Very spacious. Great to have a bathroom with every bedroom. Men enjoyed the pool table and we all enjoyed the porch! Local family told us cool stories about history of the building.

Was nice

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying in the old elf school house! I just which they had not built the houses on front so you could not have a view of the mountains and lake! Loved the use of the boat!

Owner's Response: Thank you and we are so happy that you enjoyed the house, lake and pontoon boat. Having a pontoon available during your stay is a great addition to the Lake experience. Yes, we have lost part of our lake and mountain view due to "progress" but that can happen when you are in such a great location and Community! Thanks again and please join our many other guests and friends that return frequently.

What a wonderful experience!

  • 5 of 5

First, the owner is a true gem. The property is spectacular! We sat on the porch and watched the moon come up every night--and we didn't want to leave. The neighborhood is great for walking. The Elf School is huge--and ever so comfortable. The kitchen is well equipped. The bedrooms are very nice and comfortable. We have stayed there two years in a row--and loved every single minute of it. It is simply a fantastic place to stay!

large house, with several extras. pontoon boat offsite

  • 4 of 5

it was a fun place to stay but a lot of inconsistent information given from owner and hassles for several days.

lodge had lots of space, several rooms, fun game room, cool bar style kitchen, large back deck/porch overlooking a huge yard.

the dock/pontoon is not on site, nor was that explained on either the website or during pre-rental correspondence about the lodge (i believe). there were several families with multiple adults who all planned to be able to take responsibility driving the pontoon, and it ended up only two (2) adults could drive the pontoon.

the trash did not get picked up on time. we were requested to toss it into a fenced in area (looked like a dog pin).

on the second or third night the a/c turned off in the mid-evening which led to my father walking all around the lodge (rented side and non-rented side) looking for breaker boxes, outlets, fans, etc (i don't know). we ended up having to open up the other side of the lodge (connected by game room) and aim fans? from one side to the other in order to cool our side off... i think we or someone was able to restore the a/c in a couple to few hours...

another home, believed to be owned by the same man/couple/family rented another house to our other side of our family and that house came with a pontoon boat as well. their pontoon was closer, but i believe they were only able to take it out once or where out on the pontoon when it broke down...

my grandmother was extremely upset, and they hassled her about refunding her any portion of money for the lack of pontoon for the remainder of the week and for inconvenience. i believe she ended up getting a portion back... or i'm just being generous.

Owner's Response: First let me say that I am totally shocked by this review. I do not know the person that wrote this. They were not a party to the rental transaction and I do not know why they waited 10 months to do this. I will also say that if you are a potential guest and reading this please see all the other very positive reviews we have received over the past 6 years. The person who rented our two adjacent properties, for this time period, is a very nice senior lady who lives less than 10 miles from the property. She rented for her extended family of 25+ and paid for the full rental. I was reluctant to rent to that may people but she and her son came by to "scout" the properties in August of 2014 and were extremely nice and since her son would be on site and she would be in and I, I agreed to rent to them. The Lady and I subsequently exchanged 20 email and I also exchanged email with her daughter-in-law. The Lady also sent me three notes, so there was no lack of communication and no misconceptions about the property. During their stay I had the son's cell number and he had mine. I was also on site at least three times that week, since I am the maintenance and garbage man. With that may people and the reunion gatherings, there were some minor issues with trash and one night the HVAC breaker, on one side of the houses, tripped. I quickly responded and walked the son thru the process by phone. Both properties have use of a pontoon boat and there are only two qualified drivers each, on the use agreement. One pontoon did break down. The lower engine gear went out because it had been cranked in shallow water by the previous guest. I provided them with money to rent a boat at a nearby marina. Again, I am not sure which non-paying family member wrote this but I have not received any negative feedback from the person that rented, or her son. They were extremely nice and I thought we parted on good terms.

UNIQUE AND INTRIGING

  • 5 of 5

What an experience! We never tired of taking in all of the well-appointed decor of the Lodge. Second only to the amazing history of the residence.

Cruisin' on Lake Chatuge was pristine and serene. Great way to totally relax. Packing a picnic lunch, swimming, etc.

Family and three different sets of friends over our two week plus stay enjoyed themselves immensely.

Cliff was only a phone call away to assist with any questions. He is nominated for "Landlord of the Year!"

My only wish is; if our friends decide to rent here in the future, they'll include us!
