Just OK, outside was not well kept

  • 2 of 5

We booked this property due to location to Calistoga. We were watching our daughters 6 week old while see participated in a wedding. My wife an I were excited to spend this time with our new addition, while taking advantage of the outdoor living space and pool. This was not the case as the outdoor furniture and pool area was in total disrepair.

PROS:

Location to Calistoga was approximately 15-17 minutes.

Home furnishings were adequate and well kept.

Kitchen was fully stocked and had plenty of room.

Very private location and right next to Safari West

Pool was operating and clean

CONS:

Outdoor furniture was in disrepair and very dirty.

Pool area was overgrown with weeds and grass.

Total outdoor area was not well kept and in need of repair, cleaning.

Yard needs some serious work. The pool area that we were so looking forward to was a complete disappointment.

Water from the tap in the house had a horrible smell. It made showering, washing face and brushing teeth a challenge. The check in sheet indicates that this is common for water from the well. There was nothing common about this smell, it was horrible!

We have used VRBO all over the world and have seen great value and comfort in 95% of the properties we have rented. I can tell you that this property was a complete disappointment. The property was not worth the asking price. If I would have know beforehand we could have rented a 3 bedroom cottage at Indian Springs Resort in Calistoga for less. I my opinion I would stay away from this property until the owners invest time and energy in getting the yard and outdoor living spaces taken care of. If you just need the home then it was just fine except for the water smell.

Owner's Response: I have been back and forth with Kevin H. after seeing this review was going to post. No inquiries were made about our property prior to their stay and no comments were made during it so this review caught me by surprise. We are always contactable and could have tried to address any concerns if they were brought to our attention. I get the feeling that this group would have been better off staying at one of the hotels in Calistoga which is at the core of the problem. While I concede that our property may not be a perfect fit for everyone, the overwhelming majority of people who have stayed with us have enjoyed their stay. It is a country property on 8 acres so don't expect manicured gardens. We can't justify the massive amount of water it would take to keep the entire backyard green. The back two acres are fully fenced and has landscaping. What you get is total privacy, a nice pool, a backyard for your kids or pets to run around in and a well outfitted property. The backyard faces South and so it's impossible not to have some weathering of the furniture. I have just now posted pictures taken this past Sunday, July 15th, 2017 so that people can see for themselves what to expect when it dries out. We want people to know what they are getting and rather than rebut what I feel is an unfair statement about our property I will let these pictures taken from my phone speak for themselves. As for the comment about our yard needing extensive work, we did quite a bit of hardscaping this past winter. We do have well water and it does contain hydrogen sulphide which causes the smell to which this renter refers. It's a gas and cannot be removed through filtration and as a gas is more prominent in a hot shower. We are part of a small water company and our water is tested yearly with inspections by Sonoma County so it is completely safe to drink and use. Our water is filtered with secondary filtration for drinking water coming out of the fridge and softened as it's otherwise hard and full of calcium. We don't notice the smell and this renter has been the first to complain so vociferously. We always encourage people to ask questions before booking and we feel we are always responsive and honest. For instance you are going to drive 10 minutes if you need milk. VRBO is moving more towards an online booking format and I'm not sure that encourages questions. Thanks, Franz Hill Hideaway

A wonderful respite from the City Fog

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely long weekend out of the deep San Francisco fog. We never even left the property, enjoying the pool, the deck and the spacious, well appointed kitchen. All the instructions were clear and Jeff was very responsive and helpful beforehand to make sure we would be comfortable.

We did bring our dog with permission which was great for us. The only drawback was that, since he is furry, he got covered in burrs from the grass. The grassy area immediately around the house and up to the pool was very dry and long-not as it appeared in the photos. This is understandable since it is the height of summer but the flagstone pool deck was difficult to navigate as a result.

Aside from that, it was a nice, comfortable property, was easy to stay in and provided a perfect getaway. Thank you Jeff!

Very relaxing

  • 4 of 5

House was nice, remotely located but near enough to towns or Calistoga/Napa Valley for wine tasting. Had great sun during the day for lounging at the pool. Also nice is that a good chunk of the 8 acres behind the house is fenced, so those visiting with a dog don't need to worry about your pup running off.

Relaxing weekend, great house

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our long weekend here. The beds were comfortable; the house was so well stocked (especially the kitchen!) and clean; and the property is really well maintained. The tip sheet we received before our stay was so helpful and the owner even let us know of events happening in the area the weekend of our stay. We are looking forward to returning. Thanks again, Jeff!
