This private log cabin on 11 wooded acres overlooks Lake Morey and has a fabulous eastern view of Franconia Notch and Mt. Moosilauke. From the swinging hammock chair on the deck and while enjoying your favorite beverage, you can enjoy great sunrises and moonrises while receiving, as one guest put it, “Fairlee therapy.” The first thing that most visitors say when arriving at the cabin is “wow!” Keep your eyes open as we often spot hawks, eagles, owls and an occasional hot air balloon.
Included are two kayaks and a canoe and a beach pass for the Fairlee town beach. The Lake Morey public boat launch is 5 minutes away. The cabin is 10 minutes away from a public boat launch on the Connecticut River, one of many from which you can plan a canoe or kayak trip on the river. There is a network of hiking and mountain biking trails maintained by the Lake Morey Association right off the porch. Also 5 minutes away are great road bike routes. One of our favorites crosses the Connecticut into New Hampshire. There is a bike route for everyone – from short and easy to a century ride. Lake Morey Country Club is just down the hill with a great 18 hole public golf course. There are also other excellent public courses in St Johnsbury and Hanover, both within a half hour. Hanover, New Hampshire (home of Dartmouth College) with concerts, fine restaurants and theaters is 20 minutes away. On the lower lawn, there is a picnic table and a fire pit. This recently built and carefully maintained log cabin is a perfect spot for rest and relaxation or as a base for multiple activities to satisfy the ardent athlete or the quiet nature lover. For the sportsman/woman, there is fishing in Lake Morey, the CT River or Lake Fairlee. In the fall there is direct access to the Fairlee town forest and other hunting areas.

I am an outdoor enthusiasts and try t provide a location for guests to gain as much enjoyment from this spot as I do. Mike is a former senior administrator in higher education with a background in outdoor recreation and natural resource management. He also loves music, plays guitar and piano and sings. Big fan of Bruce Springsteen. Favorite activities include cycling, golf and hiking and just being outdoors.
I have a dog, Otis, who is a 5 year old black Lab and a joy to walk with. Otis recently completed his first 4000' foot peak as we scaled Camel's Hump in March.
Mike Van Dyke purchased this cabin in 1999
Initially, it was to find a vacation home within 2 hours or so of home in western Massachusetts. Although I had lived in VT before, I had never really known this area of Vermont until taking up an offer from a friend to spend a few days at a family cabin. I fell in love with the area because it reminded him of the Connecticut River Valley of his youth, complete with a drive in theatre. After looking at other properties, this one had the location and the VIEW. Easy access to I 91 (1.3 miles) made it easy to travel from Massachusetts. Shortly after building the cabin, while sitting on the deck one Sunday reading the paper, Mike saw an ad for a job at a college in Randolph, applied and got the job. Now living in Randolph, it is less than an hour to get to Fairlee from home.
Let's start with sitting on the deck and enjoying the view. Sometimes, it's a hard place to leave. For the active outdoor person, there are a variety of things to do. For the less active, there is easy access to many Vermont attractions.
I have intentionally not added cable or internet because it is meant as a retreat from the hustle of everyday life. If you must be in contact, there is good cell phone coverage and the Fairlee library offers a wi fi hot spot. Not being on the lake offers more privacy while still being close by..
The character of the cabin is still rustic with all of the basic creature comforts needed after an active day, assuming that you can leave the deck.
What a wonderful home...Secluded, serene, restful, quiet, with every possible amenity. Truly felt like home. All we had to do was food shop and check in. Wish it were closer to the lake, but we had access to pickup truck to get the kayaks there for a wonderful experience. I brought books to read and never opened ONE. The view was too beautiful and the hammock swing too comfy. We brought our little dogs and they loved it too!! We will be back!
What I did on my summer vacation: spent an entire month in a wonderful cabin located on 12 beautiful, private acres with spectacular scenic views far from every care in the world yet close enough to anything you might need.
There is so much to do...all kinds of hiking, kayaking, swimming, sightseeing, and one thing I enjoyed the most- staying home. Coffee on the deck in the morning in the beautiful mountain air, Happy Hour on the deck as the setting sun changes the color of the landscape and a fire in the fire pit at night to take in the incredible blanket of stars and the Milky Way! At the end of a wonderful day the Loons serenade you to sleep. It's enchanting.
Had it not been for a family function that demanded my return I think I would still be there.
The cabin is rustic but cozy and has everything you need. Mike is a fantastic hands-on host...so very helpful and always available. Thank you, Mike, for a wonderful month.
Our time at the cabin was very relaxing and wonderful! The view is amazing, and the porch swing is addicting! The hummingbirds are quite mesmerizing and entertaining. The cabin was just what we needed for a very relaxing get-a-way.
Absolutely stunning! The cabin was adorable and had everything we needed! As everyone has already said, the views from the porch are just incredible. We watched the crazy hummingbirds, heard loons every day, saw a pileated woodpecker multiple times hanging out in the yard. It was so difficult to get off of the hammock swing to actually even do anything.
When we did manage to haul ourselves out of that swing we went hiking with the dogs on the trails that are located practically in the back-yard. Found some really cool random artwork along the trails. We hit Woodstock and did some shopping. Canoed on Lake Morey and caught a bunch of fish.
The only negative was that it was far too short of a stay!
Thank you so much Mike!
Incredible location, views from the second floor porch are just breathtaking. Very quiet but lots of things to do in the area within easy reach. Things were very clean and comfortable. We saw deer more than once in the evening on our way up the driveway and hummingbirds even without a hummingbird feeder. The porch swing is my new daydream. We will be back! It's a steep driveway to get to this wonderful spot so just be aware of that--but very much worthwhile!
So secluded yet so close to everything. The views from the front porch are a 100 times better than the pictures shown, absolutely stunning. If you can break away from looking at the view from the porch there is biking, hiking, swimming, boating and even a drive in movie theatre close by. The cabin is cozy and rustic, very relaxing. You even have hummingbirds that come to the feeders. Cell reception is 5 bars but once you come here, you don't really want to use it. We had 6 people and 4 dogs, plenty of room to spread out. We did fireworks one night(store 5 min away) and a campfire the other night so make sure to bring marshmellows. One day we rented a pontoon boat and enjoyed 6 hrs on the ct river, I would highly recommend doing this. The Marina is only 5 min away. Mike, the cabin owner is great and extremely helpful with any questions you make have about the area. He even offers kayaks for you to use. Next time I will bring a bike so I can pedal the 5 miles around the lake area and then visit the ice cream stand as a reward.
I cannot say enough about how great this place is. Definitely 5 stars!
