Guestbook comments from the owner

We had an amazing time escaping the city to a cottage that is more home than cottage. The place is peaceful, the cottage well-kept, hardwood floors, quiet cul de sac, sandy beach, clean water, close to town and 24 hour grocery stores, movie theatre, restaurants, etc. What's not to love?

Weekend getaway for 2

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I stayed here for a long weekend, just the 2 of us, for a winter getaway. The cottage was beautiful and full of such unique art ... all surrounding a beautiful fireplace! We love to cook, and the kitchen was supplied with everything we needed. Hilary was so incredibly helpful through the process and I feel went above and beyond!

The cottage is definitly set up to sleep many guests, and we found that (just being the 2 of us) we didn't use any other areas except the main floor.

We loved how close it was to Awenda park and used the snowshoes provided at the cottage one afternoon. The cottage is also close to many smaller towns. Went into Penetanguishene for lunch and all of our shopping was done in Tiny/ Midland which was extremely convenient.

All in all we had a great experianve, and would love to visit again in the summer :)

Thank you Hilary :)

Great stay in Winter wonderland

  • 5 of 5

There is nothing like a winter getaway in a quiet haven like this. It was nice to finally relax in a comfortable setting and take some time to unwind from our busy city life. We like to hike and were pleased to have the trails to Awenda Park so close by. Farlaine lake was also right across the road and since the house sits on a hill overlooking the lake we could enjoy our morning coffee watching the sun rise over the lake. We brought our own skis however I noticed the owner had graciously provided additional equipment for us: Skis, snow shoes, toboggan and I guess the bikes and kayak for summer visitors. There was lots of dry hardwood provided under the deck and a fireplace in the yard and another one on the adjacent beach. Hilary (the owner) bought some camp chairs specifically for us so we could enjoy the outdoor fire-pit. We used the one in the yard one night for a romantic winter outdoor fire before relaxing our tired bodies in the lovely hot tub. The hot tub is in a secluded area in the back of the house and since it was a clear night we could gaze at the numerous stars. Wow you can't see stars like this in the city.

The house is amazing with high vaulted ceilings, wide open space, elegant designer interior, original art on the walls, large windows and recently renovated kitchen and wide plank wood floors. There are two large king bedrooms, one with an ensuite and the other with a walkout deck. There its lots of additional space for other guests but the king suite was all ours. We enjoyed the indoor gas fireplace throughout our stay since it provides such nice warmth and a cozy environment. I like to cook so it was nice to have a gas stove to complement the also available large barbecue on the deck. We did not use the internet much but it was nice to have it there to keep up on emails and a bit of Facebook so we could post our adventures to our friends and family.

On one of our tours we discovered a nearby 'Free' boat ramp. Farlaine lake is perfect for my small boat. I would like to come back and check this place out in the summer. I think it might even be better than our winter visit.

Thanks so much Hilary for opening up your home to us for the week and going out of your way taking your time to make our visit so special.

A Little Piece of Heaven!

  • 5 of 5

If we could give it 10 stars, we would! What a great weekend escape. We were a group of University friends who just needed to get together to do some studying and have a quiet weekend away, so this was perfect. We had plenty of space -the cottage had enough beds for us each to have our own room- and the 'great room' with cathedral ceiling and gas fireplace was relaxing and spacious. The TV room couch and extra beds was super for evening entertainment with internet included! We went for a walk on the frozen lake -just across the cul de sac from the cottage, hiked in Awenda park -just around the corner- and had some amazing star watching in the hot tub each night. What more could you ask for on a weekend escape? Highly recommend this location... and it really is under 2 hours drive from Toronto!

STOP! Read all reviews before u book

  • 1 of 5

On arrival at the cottage - the driveway had not been cleared of snow - the house was not cleaned at an acceptable standard - when we went to make up the beds there was evidence of rodent droppings on top of and under the covers so these was not useable (fortunately took all our own bedding) - kitchenware had to be washed before use - even the garbage bin was dirty. Bathrooms were not clean and there were multiple toiletries in the basement and upstairs bathrooms. There was an insufficient supply of specified single ply toilet paper because of the septic tank so we had to purchase that. Fireplace was not working. Lamp light bulbs were not working. There was no internet. We had to clean the place before we could relax and left the cottage in a cleaner state than when we arrived. However, when I requested return of our deposit a week later, we received a nasty email accusing us of flushing alleged items down the septic tank. As I read the multiple negative reviews again it's clear there is a trend here so please take note of these reviews before you consider booking. It's unfortunate really as the cottage is in a lovely surrounding and has potential for having a great time. This owner spoilt our stay through. her lack of respect to provide a clean space for paying guests and by her follow up, intended actions.

Owner's Response: Since you flooded the cottage when one of your over-sized group (over 16!) flushed a feminine item down the toilet and blocked the whole sewage system, you wrote this critical review to try to bully us into giving a refund. After 3 days of repairs, professional plumbers, and over $1000. of flooring damage -forcing the cancellation of the next Christmas renters- The minimal $500. deposit doesn't begin to cover our expenses. The cottage was spotless and lovely when you arrived, -my cleaners are super, Kim always leaves things spotless, so your spiteful complaints about such things are very unfair. I was cornered by 13 angry men when we spent 3 hours trying to stop the flooding, and Ray- was yelled at for ‘ruining your holiday’ when he had his head in the toilet working on the repair. We were polite and did everything we could to repair things ourselves. Also, the hot tub was working perfectly when you arrived -crystal blue water -but too many people getting in and flooding it over caused the water level to drop, so air got in the pipes and resulted in the hot tub also being broken all week. (Muhammed also attempted to spam the website- by posting multiple copies of the negative review - which crashed the VRBO webpage. It's taken 3 days for them to repair this. Thank you though, for warning future renters not to flush things down the sewage pipes, and not to over-flow the hot tub. Good luck with your future rentals.

Great Retreat for the Weekend!

  • 5 of 5

A group (5) of us stayed here and found the cottage to be extremely clean and spacious with plenty of beds. The lake is easily accessible, though it is across a very quiet street, down a mildly slopped hill.

As any property owner, Hilary expects her guests to treat the cottage well- she is welcoming and quick to respond.

The hot tub was fantastic - great weekend overall.
