Destinations

The apartment is located on Via Mazzetta, a very quiet street, which forms part of the Oltrarno district in Florence’s historic city. The name “Oltrarno” literally means “beyond the Arno” and this district which stretches along the south bank of the river represents a different facet of Florence to that which is found near the Duomo. The Oltrarno perhaps displays the true character of Florence and in general is slightly quieter, greener and more relaxed than the other districts of Florence. Indeed many tourists tend to choose the Oltrarno for this reason. Traditionally an artisans’ quarter, the Oltrarno still boasts today many lovely antique shops and artisans’ studios (particularly furniture and leather-workers) and Via Maggio remains the focus of Florence’s thriving antiques trade.

Over time the Oltrarno became a rather chic area and many aristocrats chose this neighborhood to build their villas and palaces, the largest of these being the Pitti Palace, which became the home of the various Grand Dukes. Today this sumptuous palace houses several important museums which rank amongst the best in Florence. Other major sights the Oltrarno has to offer are the Cappella Brancacci with the fabulous frescoes of Masaccio, Piazzale Michelangelo with its breath-taking views over Florence, the magnificent church of San Miniato, (one of the best examples of Romanesque architecture within Tuscany) together with the most famous and oldest bridge in Florence, Ponte Vecchio, home to a glittering array of jeweler shops and goldsmiths. Extending up the hill from the Pitti Palace are the formal Boboli Gardens, an outdoor museum of garden sculpture that includes Roman antiquities as well as 16th and 17th century works. The Oltrarno is famous for its wine bars such as Olio & onvivium, authentic trattorias serving typical Tuscan cuisine such as Il Santo Bevitore, Le Barrique , La Vecchia Bettola, I 4 Leoni and Il Magazzino. The area is fully of character and history and also offers a choice of grocery stores, patisserie, bakeries, gift shops and a wonderful fresh produce market held every morning in Piazza Santo Spirito. The nearest supermarket to the apartment is just 100 meters far, in front of the Pitti Palace.

Keywords: Lella’s Nest is a typical Tuscan 2 bedroom apartment furnished soberly with unique pieces from the first half of the twentieth century. Located in the historical center of Florence , in the wonderful Piazza Santo Spirito with her faboulous Brunelleschi church , just 200 meters from Piazza Pitti and the Boboli Gardens and 400 meters from the Ponte Vecchio.

The apartment is located in the quiet street of Via Mazzetta on the third floor (without lift) in front of Piazza Santo Spirito in a historic building dating back to the 19th century.

Charm, convenience and light!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay here was for one month - and we enjoyed every minute of it. The location is perfect, the landlady and her family are very kind and accommodating and the apartment is just as described. The best part of the stay here is the neighborhood - walking distance to everything - 5 convenient bus lines, lots of small stores for daily food and weekly supplies and filled with locals whose English is not for tourists. Even though our Italian is not all that great, we were able to communicate with them all, patience prevailed! We wanted an "immersion" experience and we found it!

As Americans, we missed a few of the common things we had at home - like a clothes dryer and a really cold refrigerator - but that wasn't what we came here for this time. The apartment is decorated beautifully and has all the conveniences one needs to enjoy a home-away-from-home experience. Our time here was really satisfying and we would stay here again without hesitation.

Ci vediamo Firenze!
