Merle Lefkoff purchased this house in 2003
SJI is the perfect complement to the desert beauty of our home in Santa Fe, NM. We love the green lushness of the island and the sunny summer weather with absolutely perfect temperatures! The kids find the pond especially fascinating--fish jumping, tadpoles and frogs squirming--trolling with a net and catching and releasing little critters. We especially like our bike
excursions to the beach.
Last summer a bald eagle perched on the side of our pond lips smacking as he watched a pair of ducks circling. Hiking with the grandkids at American Camp we usually spot several baby fox kits peering at us from their hiding places in the prairie. The kids love to be courageous and crawl out on the log over the pond. Our front yard is perfect for softball and we play badminton in the afternoons by the pond. A float and row on the pond at the
end of the day is one of our rituals.
The house is gorgeous – the pictures just don’t do it justice – also everything is new and well-cared for. It feels like staying in a friend’s house rather than a VRBO. The kitchen is well equipped. The scene complete with deer and the pond is – well there are no other words to describe other than ‘idyllic’. We spent a lot of time in the house and rarely went out to eat in town. I couldn’t give it five stars because of the sleeping arrangements. The master is in a loft so there is no privacy. Also the mattress in the master was too soft which gave my husband back pain after a few nights so he even had to go down and sleep on the floor :(. The second couple in our party had to pick between a foldable full size sofa and twin beds, and they picked the latter. So it might work better for you if you are a family with three K+ kids and you don’t mind your master in a fully open loft.
This was one of our best family trips to date, mostly thanks to the vacation rental. It was a very clean, well-stocked, up to date home that seemed to have all the luxuries you would expect or need for a family (modern kitchen, lots of towels/linens, TV’s etc.). The property itself was the surprise favorite, with a wood deck off the back leading out to a large open space with a good sized pond, row boat, and enough wild life to keep the kids occupied for hours. We bought some shrimp nets in town (which was only a short drive away), and the kids spent half a day hunting for frogs. The house was additionally equipped with plenty of board games and DVDs for entertainment, in addition to daily visits by deer passing through the yard. They enjoyed the tree house as well.
Should be noted that neither of our cell phones had service (Verizon), but, that may have been a blessing to ignore work calls and get into the vacation mindset. The house did have a land line, as well as Wi-Fi allowing us to access email and the internet as needed.
We would highly recommend this property to others, and hope to plan a trip again to this same location soon.
We had a great time at this property. Obviously, this property is well cared for and loved. Fabulous mattresses. Kitchen is great to cook up local seafood from the docks like crab, shrimp and salmon. Our children loved the pond and row boat -- and the tree house.
We had a wonderful time in this house. Our kids loved the treehouse and the pond.
We stayed here for our first trip to San Juan Islands as part of a one week vacation to Orcas, Lopez and SJI. It was truly a pleasant and relaxing place to stay. Our schedule limited us to only a few days on SJI so we didn't get to just relax and enjoy the home much, but it was great when we did. Very tranquil setting, all the photos in the listing are true to form. We have 2 kids (7 & 10) and they really loved the place with all the outside activities. The rowboat and tree house were of course a hit and there is also a large open space which was great for soccer and frisbee. Inside was also well stocked with games, puzzles, and art supplies so the kids kept plenty busy.
Inside was nicely furnished and super clean and well maintained. Kitchen was well appointed with high end appliances and pretty much all the cooking utensils, spices, etc. one could need. It was fun to pick up seafood in town cook it up at the house (even though Friday Harbor also has a lot of top-notch restaurants).
Owner and on-island manager were super-friendly and easy to deal with, with lots of suggestions of things to do and see on the island. All-in-all a great place to stay. We hope to get back to SJI sometime soon, will definitely look this place up again when we do.
