Overview

About the property

Large Deck, 2 Bedrooms--full size 4-poster netted beds, etc. 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Twelve years ago we visited tico friends who invited us to what the NY Times called the “untamed coast” of Costa Rica. We fell in love with this eclectic Caribbean coast, with its blend of tourists, expats, and long-term resident indigenous and Afro-Caribbean folks. The Caribbean Coast is different from the rest of Costa Rica. It is an area endowed with a bounty of unspoiled natural and cultural resources, and recognized for its extraordinary bio-diversity and beautiful beaches.

After bringing university students down for a course in sustainability we bought a piece of this paradise in a Wildlife Refuge and built our house 7 years ago. We enjoy excellent international restaurants, and a culture that is friendly and laid back.

We built the house that would be perfect for us and after 3 years decided to rent it when we are not in Costa Rica. The house has a lovely large master bedroom, high ceiling, large screened windows, two ceiling fans--a lovely place to sit and read/work and sleep. The deck, where we spend most of our time is open to the ocean--it breezes, sounds, etc. but also it is an oasis/opening in the jungle that looks out over the ocean.

We now relish this special place, the privacy, where we can walk through our own rainforest jungle, take our path to the sandy beach and walk for miles along this almost deserted, palm-tree-lined shore of the Caribbean, observe the wildlife (sloths, howler monkeys, toucans, orapendulas, and more) from our large deck, and relax in the hammock feeling the cool ocean breezes and listening to the pounding of the surf. The house has a master bedroom, a second/smaller bedroom, shower, toilet, kitchen, and a large covered deck, all on the upper level, with great views of surrounding canopy. There is high-speed internet, WiFi and ceiling fans in each room. Need something just ask Henry, our care taker in the lower level unit.

Keywords: Upper-level private five-room suite, with private path to beach and path through private rainforest, WiFi, walk to village and restaurants by beach or road. In Wildlife Refuge, with outstanding bio-diversity and excellent beaches.

We can help make your travel from SJO airport to our house easy, pleasant, and quite inexpensive.

About Daniel and Rose Twomey

We are retired professors with a passion for nature and local ethnic cultures. We enjoy physical activity such as hiking and biking. We built the house as a special place for us to be in the jungle next to the ocean and be connected to the local community. This area, in particular Manzanillo, is a friendly place where interesting conversations take place at the local cafes and hangouts. It’s a welcoming place where anyone can join the daily community volleyball and/or soccer game on the beach.

Daniel and Rose Twomey purchased this house in 2006

Why Daniel and Rose Twomey chose Costa Rica

The magnificent, unspoiled, wildlife refuge. The Afro-Caribbean culture. The international character of the population, many of whom have come here to live and start small businesses. The wonderful climate (daytime highs in the low 80’s and nighttime lows in the low 70’s). The miles of sandy beaches and clear turquoise waters. Our place is unique. The openness to the ocean--second level--(viewing jungle from a 20 ft. height); the simple, spacious design, )large rooms, high ceilings on 2 1/2 acres).

What makes this house unique

Walking to restaurants on the beach and biking to more distant restaurants on the road. English is widely spoken. Variety of services, e.g., home delivery of organic produce and pizza. Car rental and public transportation.

Wonderful place to enjoy the natural beauty of the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I were lucky to spend a week at Casa de Earlybirds in late September, which, by the way, is a wonderful time to visit. We had almost no rain and the beaches to ourselves. The layout of the house is great: up on the second floor looking out over the jungle toward the beach. The design is nice, too; lots of wood and interesting items decorate the space. The open living area allows the sights and sounds to be with you always...the roar of ocean waves, beautiful plants and the monkeys and birds. The toucans squabble in the trees in front of the house, so we got some pictures of these fabulous birds. The howler monkeys visited a few times in large family groups. My favorite time of day was early morning with coffee in the protected "outdoor" living room. Once the sun was up, so was I; not wanting to miss anything! (my husband slept in!) The property is within a protected wildlife area, and our wanderings around the neighborhood provided as much nature viewing as any excursion we took! We rented bikes in Puerto Viejo, and rode between the different beaches along the road. We enjoyed swimming at the beach just outside our gate. Favorite restaurants: Cool Calm Cafe in Manzanillo, Selvin in Punta Uva, and Carribean Coffee shop...(the tour of their organic chocolate farm is fantastic). The owners of Casa de Earlybirds are easy to deal with and the caretaker downstairs is helpful. All in all, this was the best week of our 3 week trip to Costa Rica.

Paradise once again

  • 5 of 5

We were privileged to be able to return to Casa de Early Birds for another visit. Once again, we were not disappointed. The owners are wonderful to deal with and the caretakers who live downstairs are so helpful and kind. We enjoyed sitting on the porch listening to the ocean, the howler monkeys and looking over the lush vegetation. We walked along the beach nearly every day and enjoyed the local vibe. I can think of no better place to relax and unwind. Loved our experience in every way!

Jungle Retreat

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I were blessed to have been able to stay at Casa De Early Birds for 2 weeks in early March. We wouldn't change a thing about our stay! The owners are lovely helpful people and we were lucky enough to have a chance to meet them on our way to the house. The caretakers, Henry and Rosi, are pleasant and helpful. Next time (and there will certainly be a next time) we hope to be able to speak Spanish a bit more.

I can't think of a better place to rest and rejuvenate. Our days were spent watching the birds and wildlife and listening to the waves and other sounds of the jungle. We loved listening to the Howler monkeys settling down at night - and waking us up in the morning. We wandered on the beach and slept better than we had for ages. If you need a quiet restful place to "recharge your batteries" and help you remember the important things in life...this is your spot.

A Jungle Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

We greatly enjoyed our too-short stay in Casa de Earlybirds. Communication with the owner was excellent, and the onsite caretakers (Henry and Rosi) were very helpful. The setting is beautiful and the descriptions are accurate! We very much enjoyed our time there, although it was way too short (only four nights). The home is built with two enclosed rooms - a bedroom and a study - and a wonderful outdoor living area with an outdoor kitchen. What a joy to fix simple meals while gazing at the surrounding jungle. A short walk to the beach, which was virtually deserted most of the time, was a highlight of our stay.

Wonderful, peaceful, beautiful setting!

  • 5 of 5

We very much enjoyed our time at Casa de Earlybirds, and our four-night stay ended much too quickly. Communication with the owners prior to travel was excellent, and the onsite caretakers, Henri & Rosi, were very helpful. The whole relaxed vibe of Caribe sur was wonderful! We cooked simple meals in the open kitchen and ate on the beautiful deck looking out over the jungle. We could hear the crashing surf just a short walk to the beach, which was virtually deserted while we were there. Manzanillo is a great little town. This property is in a lovely setting and is perfect for those who don't want to be in an air-conditioned box...it is designed so that the nature all around you is visible and complements the home. We highly recommend it, and will be back!

A Beautiful Retreat

  • 5 of 5

I wanted a peaceful place to be on retreat for 2 weeks and Casa deEarlyBirds was simply perfect. Just sitting on the deck is a feast for the senses: colorful exotic plants populate the beautiful gardens; marvelous birdsong melds with the sound of waves; monkeys jump from branch to branch in the canopy of trees. I rented a bicycle and it's an easy ride to other beaches, good local restaurants and nearby grocery shopping. The garden path leads to a long, quiet beach that stretches for miles. Enjoy!
