About Peter Tanner

We are retired Canadians who enjoy travel and love our area of France. We spend 2-3 months per year in Neffies (with lots of side-trips) and find it the perfect "home" base. We speak French and a little Spanish.

Peter Tanner purchased this house in 2011

Why Peter Tanner chose Neffiès

We lived for a year in Montpellier 30 years ago - and have come back frequently since then. Owning Libellule provides us with an opportunity to spend more time in France, and enjoy the incredibly friendly community of Neffiès, the wonderful activities of Pézenas, and all the sites of the Languedoc area.

There is something special in a place where you are a few steps from the village square, a French bakery, an entertaining café, and a first rate restaurant. And everyone in the village greets you as you pass by.

What makes this house unique

Neffiès is extraordinarily well situated to be a base for a wide range of touring. It is just at the boundary of wine making region of Languedoc to the south and the rugged scenic hills of Haut Languedoc. During a stay here you can visit the Roman arena in Nimes, the exciting city of Montpellier, and the medieval castle of Carcasonne, You are 30 minutes from miles upon miles of Mediterranean beaches, or 10 minutes from fresh-water swimming. And then there is nearby Pézenas, with its boutiques, restaurants, festivals - and continuous colourful activity. Check out our website which lists a broad range of places to visit using Libellule as a base.

Spacious, clean, great location

  • 5 of 5

Interesting house in a pretty village. Lots of room, clean, wonderful rooftop deck. Very well equipped kitchen, wifi, english language tv and free telephone! The owner responded immediately to all questions and was both pleasant and helpful. There are a lot of stairs in the house - which was no problem at all for us, but might be a consideration for anyone with mobility issues. Neffies is a good center for touring around that area of France - nice to go back to at the end of the dayl

excellent stay Neffies

  • 5 of 5

We, 2 adults and a 13 years old child, had an amazing time in Neffies.

The stay at Peter Tanners home was excellent. Above our expectations.

Everything and more is present to make your stay in the house comfortable.

The house is big and tidy.

If we will visit France for a next time we will sure rent this house again.

There is a lot to see and to do in the area.

Libellule: Christmas with Old World Charm and Modern Comforts

  • 5 of 5

Our family was looking for a Christmas vacation destination in France where we could relax and enjoy being in a small town, while still being situated close to points of interest.

Located just off the town square, Libellule is loaded with both character and comfort. The building is old stone construction, which has been well cared for and plastered in such a way that much of the stone is exposed. Ceiling timbers are also exposed and the floor is a lovely warm tile, or newly placed wood laminate, which complements Libellule’s rustic, yet contemporary feel. With clean, new furnishings, and a bottle of local wine on the table our welcome was warm (the heat had been turned on prior to our arrival). Peter (Libellule’s owner) called just as we finished unpacking to make certain that we had made it in, were settled, and he invited us to call him if we had any questions…

After eleven days in Libellule and Neffies, we didn't want to leave. In addition to being nicely finished, the kitchen is well outfitted, and we wanted for nothing... With plenty of electric heaters, we were cozy and comfortable. The rooftop patio is oriented in such a manner that it captures the sun and made for a lovely place to read and nap... even in January.

Neffies is a gem. Built on a hillside overlooking endless vineyards, which stretch to the Mediterranean, it has lots of charm and is not at all touristy. The epicerie is small and well provisioned, and we sent our daughters for daily visits to the boulangerie/patiserie for delicious fresh baked goods. Within a 3 minute walk from Libellule are a couple of restaurants, one of which is closed in the winter, but the other was always filled with activity.

We loved being in Neffies over Christmas. The town was beautifully decorated, it was quiet, and we enjoyed several walks through town and beyond, into the surrounding countryside. Around Neffies are several small towns, all of which are worth exploring.

Using Neffies as a base for day trips was perfect. We enjoyed exploring the busy market of Pezenas (15 minutes), Sete and the beautiful beaches (30-60 minutes), Hiking in Moureze was awesome, a beautiful town and landscape (30 minutes), Saint-Guillhem-le-Desert also was beautiful (60 minutes), Nimes and the Pont du Gard, awesome in scale (90 minutes). Though many memorable experiences will be the walks we took in and around Neffies.

I’m sure that Neffies is lovely in summer, but we loved the peace and quiet that we found in winter.

What a wonderful place to stay.

  • 5 of 5

The house has large walls revealing the original stone construction, exposed old beams in the kitchen/dining area, an old dry sink, staircases built of logs and tiles. The entrance doors are very old and need large metal keys for access. The balcony overlooking the street is 18” deep and 3' wide with a wrought iron railing, very attractive. The kitchen, washer, dryer and bathrooms are all new.

The home sleeps 6 very comfortably. There is a rooftop patio with a view of all of Neffies; you can sunbathe, or read in the shade of the roof overhang.

All stores are just a short walk and have everything you would need to cook anything.

Home Away from Home!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Libellule was relaxing and very comfortable. We appreciated having a home base from which we could go out exploring each day, and return home to our own familiar bed each evening. We had the option of eating out, or cooking our own meals if we wished. The listing description is accurate, and the photos accurately reflect the appearance and amenities of the home. It was clean, well maintained, and comfortably furnished. The owners of the property made us feel very welcome and we appreciated the fact that they checked in with us from time to time. I would recommend this property to anyone who wants to travel with children, or a small group no larger than 5 people. Because the home is 12th century, there are stairways which can be challenging. I would not recommend this home for people who have physical disabilities that do not allow them to climb stairs.

Historic and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a quiet relaxing week with varied activities nearby and some good restaurants, and we found exactly that. You can’t help but relax in the historic town of Neffies which is less touristy than others nearby. It’s like stepping into the past, with well-preserved and interesting buildings and winding cobblestone side streets to explore.

This part of France is best traveled by car, but there is plenty of parking in the main square which is only a 30 second walk from the front door. Inside, it is clean, bright, with all the modern conveniences of home, and comfortable beds and lots of storage space. The kitchen has plenty of counter space and a new dishwasher. The second floor living room hosts numerous international TV channels and wireless internet to keep you entertained.

The scenic view from the rooftop terrace overlooking the valley and vineyards was a great place to have a glass of local wine before heading for dinner. There are plenty of restaurant options in the area, a couple within walking distance in Neffies and plenty more in the nearby town of Pezenas, all which have fantastically creative menus for reasonable prices. It’s a minute walk to the little bakery down the street which sells all the bread and pastries you will need, and there is a grocery store in the square.

The area is great for cycling, mountain biking or hiking to burn off all that yummy food. My road bike and I spent many hours climbing the nearby hills on route D15 which heads north out of town, while a short drive west gives you access to the seemingly never ending switchbacks of the Haute-Languedoc region which provide scenic and challenging climbs with very light traffic. My favourite route was the 12km 7% climb up the Col de Fontfroide near Ollarges. You can rent a fully equipped road bike (and other types) from the local Pezenas bike store at good weekly rates, and the well-marked hiking trails lead to lovely views of the valley below.
