Overview

About the property

Cabin, 1 Bedroom + Loft, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-6)

Nestled among the hardwood forest of Columbia County this secluded, handcrafted cabin offers tranquility within reach of all the Columbia-Berkshire attractions. Hand built by a local family from locally sourced pine and bluestone this 1,500 square foot cabin in the perfect place to rest and recharge among the birch trees. The 2 acre property is 2.5 miles from a paved road and a few minutes walk from state forest land - ideal if you want to immerse yourself in nature for a few precious days and forget the sounds of city life.

Deer, squirrels, raccoons, hawks and owls frequent the property. You may even see a bobcat or hear the coyotes in the distance. The large, screened porch perched among the branches looking towards the sun setting over the Catskills encourages hours spent taking in the birdsong as the light changes.

Birch Cabin can sleep up to 4-6 people but is most comfortable for 2. A queen bed in the loft provides cool, summer sleeping under the open skylight, a queen sized sleeper-sofa in the den and a full size futon in the main room can accommodate guests or children.

The airy large screened porch is furnished with a hand built picnic table for summer dinning and Adirondack style chairs for relaxing. From the porch you can easily access the large outdoor fire pit, the den, loft or the main room. In the summer, the porch usually becomes the most used room in the house. Sheltered by the shady forest Birch Cabin stays cooler than surrounding areas. Sliding glass doors in the main room face south and west bringing in the afternoon sun and give you easy access to the deck.

In cooler weather the large indoor dining table can easily accomodate 6-8 while basking in the warmth of the wood stove. The well stocked kitchen has everything you need to create all your own meals including a modern 5-burner gas cooking stove and cast-iron and copper cookware.

When you feel like a walk just open up the door and head out. Miles of dirt road surround the cabin so you can walk for hours and usually come across very few cars. You can walk or take a short drive to 2 state forests within a couple of miles of Birch Cabin that offer wonderful hiking trails, mountain top views and a pond for canoeing. With a little more driving you can access the Appalachian Trail and numerous other parks, state forest and trails along the New York - Massachusetts border.

When you are ready to head into town you can drive to Chatham (NY) in 10 minutes, Hudson (NY), Great Barrington (MA) and Lennox (MA) in 25 minites. These towns offer local, organic groceries, a great selection of restaurants, movie theaters and antique and gift shops. In 45 minutes you can be in Albany or Rhinebeck NY. The drive from NYC usually takes about 2.5 hours.

The cabin is heated mostly with the wood stove. Please be aware of this if you are visiting during cold weather.

Set Your Expections

  • 2 of 5

We have stayed at well over 30 homeaway rentals ranging from luxury to "glamping," depending on the occasion, and are fine with both as long as we are prepared for one or the other. In the case of this house, it's glamping so set your expectations accordingly. The air quality is best described as musty with some obvious water damage in the walls upstairs and from likely being closed up. The pullout sofa is an old school thin mattress with the feeling of springs underneath and a deep sag in the middle which our two girls refused to sleep on and the futon in the LR is in the middle of the large open room right next to an open kitchen making it a less than inviting and cozy place to sleep. Minimal blankets are provided (two) and no pillows for the pull out. The house is tidy (things put away) but not super clean and there doesn't seem to be a thorough cleaning service for each stay. There is a washer but no dryer so be prepared to wait for your clothes to dry. There is no welcome book, note from the owner, etc. and you feel like you're goldilocks sleeping in someone else's house rather than an invited, paying guest. In the end, we made the tough decision to leave the house after being there for a few hours and admitting that we just couldn't get comfortable enough to really relax and enjoy three days (the final straw was that our eyes and throats were on fire and itchy from the air quality despite trying to air it out). We decided that as dissapointed as we were we would sleep better in our own house so we drove the three hours home that same night. We emailed the owner but she wasn't even in the country and there was no emergency contact. She responded three days later that he just returned from the Amazon jungle. We asked for some accommodation or refund for some of the stay but she refused. In our experience, in this area, you can find better accommodations for the price. I hesitated to write this review but the lack of understanding from the owner made me feel like another perspective should be shared for those who pay to come and be pleasantly surprised.

Amazing retreat!

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful cabin is everything you could want! Nestled in lovely woods with an amazing screened-in porch, the cabin is well-maintained and charming. It is an easy trip into town for groceries and there are great hiking trails nearby. However, it is such a beautiful cabin and spot, it is easy to spend the entire time enjoying the rental! The owner is so nice and provides wonderful customer service. I can't wait for my next trip!

Secluded Beauty in the Hudson Valley

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I had a great time at Birch Cabin. We were there over Memorial Day weekend and the weather was unseasonably cold, but we had fun building fires in the wood stove, cooking, and hanging out at the house. The property and surrounding area are really beautiful, quiet, and secluded. I'd love to go back.

The Perfect Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We had an absolutely wonderful stay at Birch Cabin. It was the perfect place to just pause and enjoy getting away from it all. The house is so comfortable and felt just like home as soon as we arrived. We spent most of our time on the wonderful screened-in porch, listening to the birds and reading.

There are so many great places to hike or walk nearby and we had a great time trying them all. The nearby towns were easy to get to, although we did not spend any time there - it was too nice to just be out in nature for the weekend. Our favorite part was coming back to the cabin after a long walk to curl up by the fire.

We would highly recommend Birch Cabin to anyone looking for a place to get away and just relax. (And we have already started recommending it to our friends!)

Magical Retreat in the Berkshires!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Birch Cabin was wonderful. It is such a peaceful space that it's easy to relax. I spent a lot of time on the big screened porch - it feels as though you are in a treehouse! The forest is right outside the door, you can just set out for a walk or take a short drive to one of the many local hiking trails. I like to keep up with work while I travel so the high speed WiFi made it easy for me to stay connected while at the same time feeling like I was miles away from anyone. Highly recommended for anyone wishing to get out of the city for a few days.
