About the property

Cottage, 4 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

This cottage has been recently updated in a way that maintains many of the original stucco walls and art deco light fixtures, keeping with the tradition of a classic bungalow style cottage. Everything is all on one floor, in a layout that offers family togetherness, and areas for more privacy. There are four bedrooms; a King, Queen, and Full, plus the final bedroom with a Twin and Queen futon. Additionally, there is a small screen porch, plus a small open porch off one of the bedrooms. Located in the Gowdy Shores area in Union Pier, about two blocks to the private beach. *Please visit our main site to view the Beachwalk Retreat availability calendar.

Close to an awesome private beach

  • 4 of 5

I came to Lake Michigan with my mother and sister to meet an aunt and we all loved the house. We each had a nice bedroom and enjoyed all of the eclectic furnishings. The fully stocked kitchen was wonderful for preparing meals. The short walk to the beach through the woods was so nice, we even saw three deer. The house could use a new door lock, and new blankets. I highly recommend this house. They seem to have thought of everything, games, movies, beach towels, even a bookcase full books.

Owner's Response: Susan, thank you so much for taking the time to write your review and give us some feedback. I will pass along your recommendations on a new door lock and blankets to the owner. Marc, the owner is very responsive, and I am sure he will address. We are so glad you were able to enjoy Beachwalk Retreat with your family!

The House That Needs...

  • 1 of 5

Arrival with an abundance of food to find the refrigerator not working. Office told us "that's how it works, to put small amts. of food in at one time"... followed advice to find most food spoiled in AM.Lost approx. $50.00 of food. Took dishes from cabinet in morning to find they were all put back with out being washed. Plates had spoiled, smelly, gooey food all over them, glasses were sticky and not clean, mugs still had coffee. Totally disgusting. Floors were washed but if we walked without shoes our feet got filthy. Coffee pot needed replacement..it leaked. Decorative pillows were dirty, sofa is so old and uncomfortable as were sheets with black marks on them. Back bath ceiling is falling apart. Obviously the roof leaks which is probably why the house smells of mold unless the air conditioner is turned down and runs continuously which makes the house too cold. My pregnant daughter, her husband and 3 yr. old left after the first night because of the dirt, mold and and all reasons mentioned. Their allergies were in full bloom because of the mold as were mine, but we paid for the week and didn't want to be out the money. This was my third time at the house but will never stay there again. Would you?

Owner's Response: Linda, first, let me say thank you for staying with us at Bluefish on several occasions. I can assume that you did not have any issues in the past, which is why you chose to rent Beachwalk Retreat for a third time. As a repeat guest of our rental company, I am sure you know how quickly we react to issues and how customer focused we are. For the benefit of Linda, and for anyone else considering renting this particular home, I would like to offer or version of the scenario and what I think is an unfair review. We were wrong on our original diagnosis on the refrigerator, there ended up being an issue with it, and we took care of it and had it repaired the next morning. We brought over two large coolers with ice that night for your perishables. Tom, the other owner of Bluefish was there, and asked if there were any items that he could dispose of for you, but you told him it was not necessary, that you did not think you had lost much (With items on ice in coolers overnight, there should have been zero loss) As for unclean dishes that the previous renters put away, if you would let us know, we could have sent a housekeeper over directly to take care of this issue. (This applies to any issue, we can normally respond very quickly if we know about it) I can only say that we have great renters, and great housekeepers. Our housekeeper’s first sweep, then mop floors, and again, our housekeepers are great. I am pretty sure I brought over a replacement coffee maker. I keep several on hand for just these cases. There was a small leak in the roof above the bathroom you mentioned, and they finally figured out where it was coming from and had the roof and ceiling in that bath repaired. There is a full closet just bursting with all sorts of linen, so plenty to trade out. The owner also recently bought a new couch for the living room. Marc the owner is constantly improving his home, and puts a lot of money, time and pride in to it. For future renters, the house does not smell like mold. It never has. I do not think this one star rating is an accurate picture of a great little rental cottage. For anyone considering a vacation home, please let the property manager and owners know when things are not just so, and give us all a chance to address them right away.

Great Return Visit Vacation Week

  • 4 of 5

Our family came from Chicago and stayed for a week in the house this past summer. We were 3 adults and 4 children. The 3 girls slept in the front room. My nephew stayed in the back bedroom with his mother across the hall. My husband and I had the master bedroom. We found the place to be clean and well maintained. We needed some bulbs replaced and the quickly did that. We loved how close it was to the private beach, and also the close proximity to town. Last time we stayed there my cousin did not have MS. This time she could not get up and down the front steps without help because there was no railing to hold on to. Otherwise she was quite comfortable. The dinning table was large enough to seat us for meals which we enjoyed together. The house was well stocked with towels and games, although the kids played with the Wii. We had pretty good internet reception and my husband was able to work from there during the week, including a skyped meeting. We would have liked there to be better lighting in the kitchen, but the medium light did not stop us from having a great family week together. I would rate it 4.5 stars
