We are retired and have lived in Hauula 25 years. We purchased this unique and beautiful property with two homes and slowly made repairs and improvements to the homes and the property. In fact, this renovation process never seems to end! We live in one home full-time and rent the Ko'olau Guest House. The guest house is a Hawaiian, local style home that we have made improvements to provide privacy and lush tropical gardens that surround each hale. Our goal is to provide hales that are quiet and peaceful havens that fulfill the promise of beauty and aloha of Hawaii for our guests to enjoy. We love greeting our guests and making sure they are happy and comfortable during their stay. We try to offer our knowledge of our place that makes your visit here a wonderful, magical experience. We make a lot of new friends along the way and host people from all over the world.
Dotty Kelly purchased this estate in 1993
Hau'ula is a village with 'real people' ... a truly authentic Hawaiian place, on the ocean, with the most beautiful, peaceful beaches in Hawaii. Hau'ula is home to many Native Hawaiians and other Polynesians. Ko'olau Country Gardens Guest House is located high on the hillside of the Ko'olau Mountains overlooking the small town of Hau'ula with spectacular views of the Pacific. There's not a better location on earth...we love it! We chose to live in Hau'ula because of it's people, weather, natural beauty and location...far away from the crowds of Waikiki and Honolulu. The pace is slower, life is more informal and people are good friends and neighbors.
The property is agricultural with many tropical fruit trees on rockwall terraces. We have papaya, apple banana, breadfruit, coconut, star fruit, grapefruit, fig, logan, lichee, mango, orange, lemon, lime, chico, avocado and mountain apple. This is a great place to learn about tropical agriculture and plants.
The Hibiscus Hale was exactly what we needed after a week of the bustle in Waikiki. Quiet and secluded, we found this fit our needs perfectly and Dottie was an excellent hostess.
We spent much of our time exploring the North Shore as this was my husband's first trip and my 11th trip to Oahu. The waves were astounding as they reached 40'-50' and made for great photo ops. We visited all the sites along the way including Waimea Bay and the falls, the Dole Pineapple Plantation, Haleiwa and Sunset Beach.
There is a nearby grocery store with local foods and other staples where we bought our groceries and the kitchen was well stocked so we had no problem with cooking.
When we return to Hawaii in the next year or two we will check on availability for this hale first.
Dottie was very helpful. Before finding Dottie's home, I was dealing with another homeowner closer to the town area but he was not very inviting and to me it just seemed like he needed people to occupy his home. Dottie was the total opposite from that. From the beginning she was so nice and friendly. She would explain the whole rental agreement process and payments. She did send me a list of places around the area to eat, shop, swim, etc. We stayed at the Koi Hale. Perfect size for our party of 5 adults, 2 kids and 2 toddlers. If we had any questions, she was only a phone call away. She lives on the property so it was easy for her to help us if we needed it. The only problem we had was finding the home. It is off the beaten path but Dottie was able to guide us as we were on the phone with her. It is about 5-10 mins away from Polynesian Culture Center, so if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, this is the perfect getaway. It's a good 50 mins to 1 hour from town. Thank you, Dottie for your beautiful home.
We rented both houses for a group of 9. We put all the Millennials in one house and the Baby Boomers in the other. We were there for a family wedding, but stayed for 10 days. The wedding was so beautiful at the Kualoa Ranch nearby, which would be fun to visit more. There was so much to do and we loved coming home to our quiet, relaxing place with a beautiful view of the ocean.
Dottie was wonderful, lending us snorkeling equipment, beach chairs, advice, and whatever else we needed. They brought us tools and helped us fix a broken suitcase. She even brought us fruit that was in season from our property, papayas, mangoes, bananas and limes! We tried out several beaches, but our favorite was the one closest to our place. I loved the town of Hau'ula; we had a small grocery store nearby, and the little shops were fun.
I would love to come back and stay there again!
Last month we visited Oahu with a group of 11. We were there to celebrate our one year anniversary as well as visit a friend who lives on the North Shore. The beginning of our trip was a bit rocky as we missed our flight and missed a day, but Dotty was helpful through all of it. We stayed in both rentals and Dotty made sure that our groceries were all put away before we arrived, and everything was set for us to just relax when we got there. The property is off the beaten path a bit so you are out of the hustle and bustle of the city but a short to minute walk to the beach. Located in a small town and everyone seems very friendly. When you tell the locals where you have chose to stay every one of them told us what a great selection that was and you cant find a better place than Hauula. My husband and i had a bad renting experience on our honeymoon so I was a bit hesitant at first to rent another house but so happy that I did.
I have not stayed at or viewed any of these two properties. We have decided on something else instead of the Koi Pond Hale. I am giving a review of the owner , Dotty. I emailed her recently to rent the Koi Pond Hale. There is a group of us who are coming to visit Hawaii. This email was followed up by a few phone calls . She was extremely courteous, patient , helpful and all around pleasant person. I had some trouble getting her emails and she patiently stayed on the phone with me while I searched for them. She went above and beyond to answer all of our questions about the unit. She also provided us with many helpful tips about traveling the Hawaiian Islands , what we may need to bring and what to expect while we are there.
I am writing this review because while searching for a unit I have encountered many rude owners who just want your money and just don't care about you , your stay, your question or their rental. So I like to give positive people the praise they deserve. It is always to easy to only complain all the time . Thank you for all your help Dotty. We really appreciate it.
After spending 5 days in Honolulu, it was such a pleasure to arrive at Koolau Country Gardens. The drive up was beautiful! We stayed in the Hibiscus Hale, and it was just as advertised. Being able to sleep with the doors open, listening to the birds and the rain, and having that wonderful breeze was pure relaxation. The screened lanai is now my "happy place" when I think of my time on Oahu! We took a helicopter ride out of Turtle Bay, spent a day at the Polynesian Cultural Center, drove to Waimea Valley and shopped in Hale'iwa. Dotty was great to work with, and made our trip planning less stressful. Having a washer and dryer was nice, no packing dirty laundry home! I would most certainly stay here again. Mahalo
