About Rilla Hughart
I grew up in Franklin and still have lots of family in the area. My husband and I come often and sometimes bring our traveling cats with us.
Rilla Hughart purchased this House in 2008
Why Rilla Hughart chose Smithbridge
The property sits on 4 1/2 acres of land inherited from my grandparents whose home is just next door. My childhood home is the neighbor down the road - see VRBO property #582823. My brother built the house here and lived in it until 2011.

Very cozy and private
I booked this rental because I wanted to bring my 4 dachshunds on vacation with me. Rilla was very prompt in getting back with me and said it would be alright with an additional security deposit. I instantly booked.
I was very impressed by how cozy this property is and loved the wildflowers along the yard and visiting birds at the bird feeders every morning. Rilla and her husband keep it very clean and tidy. My dachshunds absolutely LOVED the yard and the home. Rilla and her husband are awesome hosts! The pups were so relaxed inside the house. When I left to look at properties, they stayed in their crates; when I was home they loved cuddling and chilling in the living room. It was cute seeing them so happy :) The fenced in yard has soft green grass with no sand spurs (unlike what they are used to in St. Augustine) AND has concrete all along the perimeter base of the fence. My dachshund Lucy loves to dig under fences to get at any potential intruders (like lizards) but soon found out that she couldn’t with this fence. I felt like I was on a real vacation because I didn’t have to be on high alert with her...lol. The grass reminds me of the type of grass you’d find in New Zealand, soft and short, so even pups who don’t like walking on grass like this grass. There is a neighbor’s dog nearby, but he ignored us. The neighbors keep to themselves to where you feel like you are on top of your own private hill.
No WiFi - was actually not an issue. I just used my iPhone as a personal hotspot and was able to use my computer like normal. It was rather nice being more disconnected than usual. iPhone>Settings>Personal Hotspot>On and your laptop connects automatically.
I loved the location of this property. It’s close to everything without being too close. I was here on vacation and to look at properties and everything was within a 5-10min drive. I felt very safe the entire time. Even though it was a little chilly and overcast during our visit, this house kept us warm and cozy.
Only thing I would mention for your own personal preference: The back door doesn’t have a curtain so if you like your privacy, bring something to cover it up. It doesn’t face anything so no one would look in. All the other windows have blinds or curtains.
Overall experience: Loved this place! Check out the neat artwork on the kitchen walls and read the binder for the history of the place. Super cool!
Thanks so much! You were a wonderful guest who left everything in great order and we would be happy to have you and your pups anytime!
Super nice home
The home was super clean and had everything we needed!
Perfect mountain getaway
The house was great. Very warm and inviting for our family. Our kids had a blast playing with games and toys. Excellent location. The kids enjoyed exploring in the woods behind the house and running up and down the big hill. Everything was clean and well kept. Beds were comfortable. This was our second year in a row staying on this property for the last week of the year. Last year we stayed in the house at the bottom of the hill on the same property. The owner is great. You can feel the warmth and love in the decorating and the upkeep. Thanks again!
Thank you so much! We were glad to have you stay with us again. I'm glad you were comfortable and enjoyed the house....that's our goal.
A dream vacation in the Smokies for our family of four.
Our 2 and 3 year old girls and us loved staying at this wonderful cabin in Franklin. The house is very child friendly, so our girls were able to run around safely every time they got a chance.
Central location made it possible for us to enjoy day trips to spectacular waterfalls, nature trails, window shopping in Hellen and art gallery hopping in Highlands..... etc. It was just as easy to get onto a highway or take a chance and wander off onto one of the local roads leading to an an amazing adventure.
On the personal note, I loved having a well stocked kitchen and tastefully decorated living areas and bedrooms. Beds were super comfortable and beautifully decorated. I also really appreciated the garden.
I loved everything about this house, except for being a bit too close to the neighbors and the neighbor’s dogs. I would definetely recommend staying at this property to my friends or family. We had a blast in Franklin and we will probaby be back next year.
Thank you, Rilla. Blessings to you and your family,
the Annins from Fort Lauderdale.
Rented the home for a weekend getaway to visit my daughter at Western Carolina University, the home was almost perfect! Clean, comfortable, quiet, and I was even able to bring my daughter's dog along for the trip!!! The fenced in portion of the yard was perfect for our dog to go out and do her business. At first the house & driveway were a little difficult to find, passed them a few times, even though the GPS took us right where we needed to be. Although we were high on the hill in a quiet remote place, everything we needed was only a 10 minute drive away!! I think the only downfall of the home was the lack of knives, prepping for dinner was a bit difficult with a steak knife. So if you're like me and enjoy cooking, I suggest you bring your own knives. Other than that, this home will be on top of our list of places to stay when we visit the Smokies!!
Thanks for your kind words...I'm so glad the house worked out for you. And, yes, I noticed the missing knives last time I was there. I have some now to replace them but sorry I didn't get them there before your visit.
Second stay and did not disappoint
Franklin is known for an abundance of Ruby mines where you can try your luck at finding the 'big' one. The Smoky Mountain Center for the Performing Arts is only about 3 miles away and features some great acts. Just next door to it is The Fun Factory with lots of games, go-carts and other amusements for children and adults. The downtown area is small but has some great shops including one that features crafts made in NC. There are beautiful mountains, waterfalls and scenic drives. A 40 minute drive will also bring you to a ride on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad. A drive of about the same time will bring you to the reservation for the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians. Here you can see a wonderful outdoor drama about the infamous Trail of Tears called 'Unto These Hills'. The Oconaluftee Indian Village is also in Cherokee and shows much about their history and crafts.
