We are *Laurie(Susmark) & Jo Cooney. *My family has owned Wilderness Watch since 1951, and after my mother died, I bought out my four siblings. My wonderful husband Jo came along shortly thereafter and together, we have worked to maintain and improve the property, while caring for the woods and its creatures. (Recently, we celebrated 25 years of personal ownership.) I spend five months of the year in managing the rental. During the off-season, I take care of marketing and our rental home, along with caring for our two dogs, King Arthur and Lobo. We have one daughter, 28, who joins us at the cabin every summer, with her dog, (Lobo's sibling) Duncan. Before doing this, I was working for a Nursing Home and did Home Child Care. I love animals, kids, helping seniors and photography. I am on-site at Wilderness Watch, (we own 2 houses on 2 acres), should anything come up that should require my assistance. See our video home tour, via the link. ADDITIONAL HOME PHOTOS ON OUR WEB DOMAIN. Use link provided to view additional photos of the home .
Laurie Cooney, Owner purchased this mobile home in 1951
My parents first bought the property after my father traveled up for many years hunting and logging. Then they and my Grandparents purchased a second home to put on the property for my Grandparents to be snow-birds from Florida and they vacationed in Upper Michigan for many years. As a child, we spent every summer, from school out, to school back in session, at the cabin. I have spent my whole life exploring the Cisco Chain. Now that my parents and grandparents are all gone, we turned the larger three bedroom home into a rental, and kept the smaller one bedroom home, (with a recent addition, now a 3 bedroom also) for us to live in, while managing and maintaining the rental. Looking towards the future, my daughter looks forward to carrying on the family traditions we started so long ago. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and take care of Mother Earth!
Located at the middle of the Cisco Chain of 15 lakes, Wilderness Watch is on a medium sized lake, that has an average depth of forty to sixty feet. The spring fed lakes are crystal clear all the way through August, before the 'bloom' comes on for the winter. Excellent fishing and swimming, right from the dock! Having 'grown up' on the Cisco Chain, I can offer many insights into the sights and activities of the Chain, not to mention great fishing holes! I also offer the only Guided Pontoon Tours of the Cisco Chain, (where you can view the fourteen Great Bald Eagle nests) and I offer a discount to my renters. When you arrive, I have a packet of information, detailing all the things to see and do within a two hour radius of the home. I can offer tips on places to eat, things to see and the must-see waterfalls in the area to hike. There is a gambling Casino in Watersmeet. Lake Superior is also just a short drive away, offering a wonderful day trip location, to rock-hound or just marvel at its magnitude and beauty. No matter what your interests are, Wilderness Watch is at the heart of all the best the Western U.P., North-woods has to offer! Come let us show you what we've known for years... It's all PURE MICHIGAN!!
My husband and I had a fantastic time and we hope to make this a yearly tradition. The bed was very comfortable (slept better than I had in years), furniture and temps comfy and cozy. My favorite (other than the spectacular view of the lake from the house, was the pontoon tour (complete with an on-board bathroom. We saw numerous eagles (and their nests!), blue heron, loons, and many other birds and wildlife. Laurie was amazingly knowledgeable about the different species, nesting habits and wildlife habitats. Full moonrise on the water from the pontoon was also a huge highlight. We highly recommend Wilderness Watch for anyone who wants to escape the daily grind and get back to nature to rest and rejuvenate, and we can't wait to get back there this year. We are counting the days.
Plenty of room for everything we needed. We lived the screened in porch! The dock was nice with an electric plug in close by. The owners were great and made sure we had a great time while we were there.
This home is on a bluff, with a screened-in porch overlooking the lake. House is clean and well maintained and well stocked. Owner is friendly and helpful. The boat tour of the lakes was very relaxing and interesting, saw Eagles as well as two fledgelings. Hummingbirds abound at the feeders around the house. We did a day trip to the Porcupine Mountains, another to Bond Falls. This was our 3rd time staying at this place, and on previous stays we also did a day trip to the Kewenau Peninsula. There is good swimming right off the dock. The area is wooded and private, and if relaxing is what you are looking for, this is a great place to find it !
This is our second stay at the Wilderness Watch. The 1st time was with extended family and this time it was just the 2 of us. We had a great time on both stays. Lots of bird feeders for my bird-watching husband (hummingbirds, woodpeckers, all kinds of birds!). Very peaceful and beautiful. Laurie is so accomodating and we plan on making this an annual or semi-annual trip. Key thing to note is this is a wilderness getaway and not a resort. But if you like peaceful and wilderness like we do, this is a great place to stay !
My extended family and I have been visiting the Cisco Chain for generations, and we were incredibly pleased to have found out about this rental. It's centrally located within the chain, and a great place to stay for those seeking a true wilderness getaway, as opposed to a busy resort-style vacation. Perhaps the most notable feature of this property is the owners. They made every possible effort to ensure that our family had a great stay at their rental home; they were above-and-beyond accommodating. I promise you that these are people who genuinely care.
This was the perfect hub for all that we wanted to do in the area! We took a pontoon tour with the owner, Laurie, which we highly recommend! She has great knowledge of the area and her love for the lakes shines through as she shows you around. She knows right where eagle's and osprey's nests are and where other wildlife might be found. You can just relax and take it all in. We also took a day trip up to Porcupines Mountains and the Lake in the Clouds one day. Is was equally beautiful! There are nice areas to explore right near the property, such as Bond and Agate Falls. It's a great place to get away and relax! Thanks, Laurie!
