Overview

About the property

Apartment, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-6)

This charming Victorian flat is light and spacious and has recently been remodeled. The second parlor features a 50' flat-screened HDTV. There are two bedrooms, a bathroom and a wide hallway.

This neighborhood that includes Haight Ashbury and Cole Valley is one of the most desirable in the city. You can start your day at one of the six espresso cafes within three blocks of 740 Shrader. My favorite is Reverie Cafe; and for brunch, lunch or dinner go to Zazie's, a french bistro on Cole Street. Wander up and down Haight Street and into unique shops. Stop in at one of the very best independent bookstores, Booksmith, which brings writers to the neighborhood and sponsors many community-oriented events.

Spend some time in Golden Gate Park and go to the California Academy of Sciences and visit with the penguins and see the amazing aquarium. The CAS cafe may be just the place for lunch. Across the way is the De Young Museum which has good food as well as an outstanding art collection and special exhibitions. Alice Waters of the famous Chez Panisse restaurant in Berkeley raised the bar on museum fare some years back. Lucky for us!

Keywords: This charming Victorian flat is spacious and light with a double parlor, two bedrooms, one bathroom, large eat-in kitchen with new SS appliances including a Bertazzoni gas range. The kitchen and a bedroom look out upon a lovely garden and brick patio. The front parlor looks out upon ferns, jasmine and Vinca Major, as well as a Sycamore tree of dramatic proportions.

Some of the amenities include a large collection of books and art, children's books and toys.

About The Owner

My introduction to San Francisco was in the sixties when I worked on a surgery ward at UCSF. My free time was spent hanging out in North Beach and favorite places: City Lights Bookstore, Vesuvio’s Café, Enricos’ and Café Trieste. After sojourns on the Monterey Peninsula, Washington, D.C. Vietnam and North Carolina, I returned to San Francisco to work as a professor in the UCSF School of Nursing

The Owner purchased this apartment in 1977

Why The Owner chose San Francisco

Haight Ashbury was the neighborhood where I wanted to live, and I fell in love with 740 Shrader Street, a house built in 1897 by a well-known artist of the day, Nellie Burrell Scott who was married to Wisner Gillette Scott, an engineer with investment in the mining industry. He was also a very civic-minded gentleman who gave the opening address to the West Coast Defense League meeting in Seattle in 1916 during WWI.

What makes this apartment unique

740 Shrader has been a work in progress all these years, and I take great pride in the high quality of maintenance and improvements. Music has been a passion throughout my life, and opera is my favorite musical form. I especially enjoy chamber and classical, music as well as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie and Joni Mitchell. Collecting books is another passion; my library includes an extensive collection of books about military history, war and peace. This particular interest derives from an 18 month period in 1967-68 when I worked for the Agency of International Development as a nurse adviser in South Vietnam. Other interests include politics and art. My travels have taken me to Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, Central America, and Mexico. I was a board member of Haight Ashbury Improvement Association for a number of years. What a sweetheart! Harry is a friendly Shih Tzu and resident of 740 Shrader. We celebrated his second birthday in May with friends and neighbors and his favorite four-legged playmates.

Fantastic Place! We loved it!

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful, peaceful home! Joan could not be a nicer host. She is very attentive to any need you might have, and equally allows complete privacy. We were well looked after, and felt very at home.

The apartment is absolutely charming. Every thoughtful detail is in play. The home is spacious, clean, good light and comfortable. There is a beautiful back patio just off the kitchen we greatly enjoyed. My dog and I had a fantastic month here, and I would book here again in a heart beat.

The location is amazing. You are among the lovely, historic, Victorian homes of the Haight-Ashbury district. You can walk everywhere, and you are not in a section of steep SF hills. The immediate blocks are flat and easy to navigate. Surrounding are lots of restaurants, coffee shops and stores. Whole Foods is a few blocks away. Golden Gate Park is just a few blocks away (you can walk to the lawn of the Flower Conservatory within 10 minutes) . Public Transportation (Muni) is just 2 blocks away. Street parking is only for 2 hours at a time (and can be hard to find), but there is a 24 hour parking lot, 1 block away ($22 for 24 hrs.) which was very worth it.

This truly is a wonderful place to stay with a fantastic host; you'll be very happy here!

Great value!!

  • 4 of 5

Place is large and utilitarian but old. The large number of books definitely added to the accumulation of dust over the years. The homeless (even though they are harmless) in the neighborhood worried me about my family, especially when I was away for work. Now that my peeves are down, let me come to the good part.

Hostess Joan is awesome. She genuinely cares about her guests and makes sure their needs are properly addressed. The WholeFoods store in the neighborhood and the GoldenGate park are my favorite spots. The place is large and this allowed us to have guests over an weekend. Great time and great memories!! Thank you Joan!!

Owner's Response: Most of my guests appreciate the interesting books which are part of my very selective personal library. The Victorian house was built in 1897 and has been very well-maintained all these years. The exterior was recently painted. A cleaning crew comes after guests leave and vacuums, dusts, mops, puts freshly laundered linens on beds, scrubs kitchen and bathroom thoroughly. Housekeeping services can be arranged during the stay. There are very few homeless on the block

Fantastic! A wonderful place!

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Joan for a wonderful month in San Francisco!! You were extremely accommodating and Flat A was lovely. I would highly recommend the place and would rebook in a heartbeat.

Available on site is laundry and easy access to Whole Foods for groceries.

We arrived to a well stocked and well maintained place and when I noticed that I couldn't make my morning smoothies without a blender, Joan immediately got one for the Flat.

The location is central to many attractions in SF. GOlden Gate Park has so much to do and is just a block away. Highly recommend.

Cozy flat in a terrific location.

Everything was great. The location in Cole Valley and near the park made walking easy. Long term parking at Kezar was a block away.

The house was clean and comfortable. Big kitchen with great stove.

Thank you Joan for such wonderful hospitality.

Great City Flat

  • 4 of 5

The cozy, city flat was just right for our family. We have several children, including a 1 year old. I was really grateful for the high chair and the rest of the kids really enjoyed the train set while the baby napped. It was surprisingly close to much of the city. We spent time at The Embarcadero, The Golden Gate Bridge, the Conference Center, the Beach, the Golden Gate Park. The street parking was doable (pay attention to the signs!!)...it was only a hassle on Sunday as it was the popular Bay to Breakers event run that day.

Lovely Flat

  • 5 of 5

This is a charming San Francisco flat. It was perfect for our family of four. The flat was very clean and the beds were super comfortable. The kitchen was updated and has everything you need. It is close to Golden Gate park and a Whole Foods market is only a block away. The owner lives on the third floor and was very helpful and accommodating. I would certainly recommend it and I would stay here again with my family.
