About Berenice Parsons

Rock Basin Guest Homes Mission Statement: To be stewards of the land and its productivity while providing opportunities for guests to connect with the fruitfulness of the earth and the beauty and harmony of nature.

I purchased the 4 acres the Windmill House occupies with the 80 acre parcel next door where The Vista House and the vineyards are located in 1979. I had the Windmill House built in 2003 and used it as a month to month rental for 1 year. After attending a class at Cal Poly University on Agri-Tourism, I realized there was an unfilled niche for my home in the vacation rental market. I joined VRBO in 2005 and have enjoyed much success and many satisfied and returning customers during my many years of operations. Book your next getaway at The Windmill House and see why so many of my guests book their next visit before leaving.

Why Berenice Parsons chose Central Coast

I converted The Windmill House from a month to month rental to a vacation rental to fill a demand for vacation rentals in a rural, country setting. Guests enjoy getting away from it all out here while only a short 20 minute commute from downtown San Luis Obispo and 30 minutes from the wineries of Paso Robles and area beaches. For summer visitors, our fog free weather is a welcome change to the cold beach house rentals and our mountain elevation keeps us cool at night. Guests can enjoy complimentary wine tasting at nearby Soaring Hawks Vineyards and Ancients Peaks Winery in Santa Margarita and several other nearby wineries.

What makes this house unique

The Guest Homes are clean and well maintained with all the modern conveniences including WiFi and Satellite TV. Guest are supplied with oak bark and charcoal for the Weber BBQ, foil, ziplocs, paper towels and toilet paper so you don't have to bring these bulky items with you. Seasonal fresh herbs grow from March - October in the garden and the fruit trees in the backyard provide fresh peaches, nectarines and plums. The Guest Homes are some of the closest housing for visitors to Santa Margarita Lake Park or events at Santa Margarita Ranch, Spanish Oaks Ranch and the Pozo Saloon. Book your stay now and enjoy the luxury of a true home away from home for your next vacation.

Quiet family retreat

  • 4 of 5

House was nice and plenty of space for 4 adults and 2 small children. It really was out in the countryside with narrow windy roads so taking little kids for a walk was not easy. Enclosed backyard with patio table and grill was nice. Wi Fi did not work well despite changing out the router. Berenice was very responsive and if you really want to get away this is the place for you

Owner's Response: Susan and Family: Thank you for your review of your stay. I'm a bit confused by your remark that the new WiFi router did not fix the connection issues as you had said the new router had solved the problems you were experiencing when you arrived. Being in the countryside, only a satellite connection (Hughes Net) is available. The signal can be affected by the weather and be slower on the foggy or overcast days. I asked the one of the housekeeping staff to use her Smart Phone with the system and she had no problem with connection or speed. I am glad to know that you enjoyed your week here despite the few days with poor Wifi.

A quite stay

  • 4 of 5

If you want a quite and peaceful stay, this would be a good choice. Keep in mind that going to the house at night could be scary for someone not used to rural area. Bernice was very accommodating in our schedule. House was clean. Note that you won't have any phone service nor data to access internet in the house. Though the house has WiFi, it was very slow and most of us couldn't access the the internet with the WiFi. We tried to reset the router but couldn't because there were many spiders around the router in the garage. Overall, the stay was good. I would have given this a five star if it was just me, but many people in my group were complaining about the poor performance of the WiFi. So I took one star off. I would recommend this house for people who enjoy quiet and peaceful stay in a rural setting.

Owner's Response: Yuan and Family: Thank you for your review of your stay in my quiet, countryside home. I am sorry you found the WiFi connection to be slow. While I subscribe to the faster service available, satellite connections can be affected by the rainy, overcast weather we experienced while you were here. Thanks to your mentioning it, I have removed the spiders and cob webs which built up in the garage near the router. I maintain a land line phone in the house because cell signals are blocked by the surrounding mountains and I cover the first $10.00 in guest phone charges. I am glad to know that these minor inconveniences did not hinder the enjoyment of your time together.

Comfortable getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Very comfortable, charming and well-equipped house in a quiet, peaceful rural area. Family-friendly with plenty of beds and outdoor play areas. Beautiful neighborhood; twenty-minute drive to grocery stores. This was a great home base for our visit to Carrizo Plain in wildflower season. Owner very responsive. Recommended!

Owner's Response: Anne and Family: Thanks so much for your review. Your family 's timing for seeing the wildflowers on the Carrizo Plain was perfect as the blooms were in full color during your Easter week visit. While there are still flowers to be seen, they are beginning to fade with the warmer, drier days. Windmill House offers travelers a clean and comfortable home base close to most all of the Central Coast's many attractions. For visitors attending weddings in the Santa Margarita area, Windmill House is an affordable alternative to booking multiple hotel rooms. Windmill House is close to events held at the Oyster Ridge Barn, Santa Margarita Ranch, Santa Margarita Lake Park and the Pozo Saloon. I look forward to hosting your return visit.

Windmill Guest Home

  • 5 of 5

This is our third stay at Rock Basin and it is truly a hidden gem. The location is perfect for enjoying all the activities that the Central Coast has to offer. We really enjoyed the bicycling on the Pozo Rd/Parkhill/Las Pilitas Rd loop. We saw wild turkeys, deer and even a herd of Tule elk on one of our rides. The Santa Rita Road ride from Templeton over to Cayucos is also one of our favorites. Lots of places to hike nearby. Santa Margarita Lake trails are all wonderful. The Bluff trail and Point Buchon trail at Montana De Oro State Park are also great. Be sure to visit the wineries and breweries in Paso Robles. B is a wonderful host, very knowledgable about the area and very accommodating. The house is comfortable and well laid out for having a few guests or a larger family. We look forward to returning soon!

Owner's Response: Chuck & Peg: Thanks for your review and for your mention of the hiking trails and cycling that you enjoyed during your third month long visit. With your trips to the Monarch butterfly groves, elephant seal rookery and Wildflower fields along Shell Creek Road, you managed to cover a lot of the San Luis Obispo countryside. Catching sight of the Pozo area Tule elk herd must have been a special moment. I have lived in SLO County for almost 50 years and have only seen the elk herd twice. I look forward to hosting your fourth annual visit next spring.

Owner's Response: Dennis & Ginger: Thanks for your review. I was delighted to know your family had a memorable visit. The weather couldn't have been better for an evening BBQ before your son's wedding the next day at Santa Margarita Ranch. I hope to see you back again soon for fishing at Santa Margarita Lake Park, hiking the local trails or perhaps some wine tasting and relaxing at the Windmill House.

Peace and quiet await you

  • 5 of 5

We just got back from a relaxing weekend at the Windmill house. We were initially nervous about the location being so far out in the country but after a day of sightseeing in Morro Bay or downtown SLO, we all looked forward to getting back to our quiet home away from home. The house could not have been more comfortable for my family (age ranges from 3 to 68). We came out to visit my daughter who attends Cal Poly. Would definitely stay here again. Berenice was a dream to work with.

Owner's Response: Lisa and Family: Thanks so much for your review. As you found, the short 20 minute commute to Cal Poly-SLO is a small trade off for having a well equipped country home with space for a family group of eight. You picked a great weekend, too, as we were having a break in the winter rains. I look forward to your next visit.
