This secluded, newly renovated cottage is located on seven wooded acres, with 350 feet of rocky, deep-water, shorefront -- in the Oceanville section of Stonington, on the beautiful island of Deer Isle. This picturesque fishing and sailing community has changed little during the past 100 years.
A new, knotty pine 20 x 20-foot bedroom with vaulted ceiling and skylight was constructed recently. Special features include pre-finished hardwood floors, braided rugs, and large Anderson windows along the front of the cottage overlooking beautiful South East Harbor. There is a newly constructed bathroom and baseboard-heat throughout. The kitchen is fully equipped. There is a king-size bed in the bedroom, with two twin beds in the loft, and a sofa bed in the large living room (20 by 20 feet).
Lobsters and crabs are available by contacting the local caretaker/lobster fisherman. Or you can walk to the shore and pick up mussels -- or do your own clamming.
Enjoy the large sixty-foot deck while watching the lobster fishermen setting and hauling their traps. Relax as you watch sailboats passing by, and while viewing beautiful sunrises across SE Harbor -- and over Cadillac Mountain and Acadia National Park.
Launch a kayak or small boat from your own shore, and paddle along the clear waters of the beautiful rocky coast of Maine.
This is a great place for an artist or writer. A computer connection and local telephone number can be obtained.
Local telephone, linens, all utilities, and baseboard heat are provided in the rental.
Please call for availability.
This was the perfect place for my husband and I, who live very busy work days all the time to just get away and enjoy peace and quiet. The deck is large and has beautiful views at sunrise and sunset. The house is very clean and functional with all the appliances and accessories you need - just bring your clothes and shop for food. We had a great down time.
This is a wonderfully updated Historic Maine "Camp" with huge windows running the entire oceanfront side along a full length deck. The floors are highly varnished hardwood which reminds one of the bright-wood on a sailing vessel. The interior is also varnished wood and the master is as large as a small cottage with a vaulted ceiling, and has a king bed and a wonderful northwest pacific area rug.
It has all the electronic amenities including dish TV, wiFi etc. etc. The kitchen is fine as is the bath (a good pounding shower).
Very easy to launch kayaks/canoe and one can also do the canoe trail that the ancient Micmoks used to for an inland passage. The tides are not strong so there really is no problem paddling against them (although better to be with them!). Small gravel beach from mid-tides, lots of rocks to perch on.
5 minutes to Stonington wherein lives the Stonington Opera which produces a plethora of inexpensive musical and non-musical, classical, pop, movies etc and great popcorn.
Devote a couple of days to Acadia National Park and make sure you stop at the Jordon Pond House for popovers and tea before you return.
The owner's response is accurate in every detail. My only point would be about launching a small boat. Make sure it is a light small boat (ie glass, inflatable). I have a wooden Beetle Cat sailboat and it would have been very difficult to launch, as it is wooden and heavy (although it is only 12'. )
The place would be great for kids, but it really takes a bit of life to realize just how special this place is!
We had a really nice stay at this cabin. We traveled with 3 small children and they had a great time exploring the waters out in front of the property. This property offers pros and cons, but overall well worth the money.
Cons: the cabin is dated, don't let the description if recent renovations fool you. The master bedroom is nice and is a new addition however aside from a new dishwasher in the kitchen that is about all else that is new. Everything else is clean, but looks like it came out of the 80s. The access to the water is a little grown up and really only accessible during low tide, otherwise it is hard to get to the shore line. There is a washer/ dryer, but it is in an unfinished basement that you must access from outside, not fun when you are trying to do clothes in the rain. The "loft" area is not good for little children as the railings are very dangerous, it is also not ideal for teenagers or adults as the ceiling is extremely low.
Pros: the house is clean and well maintained. There is a lot of living space and plenty of sleeping room. The description doesn't mention an additional futon for sleeping but there is one in addition to the full size sleeper sofa, king master and two twins. The house is very well stocked from games to play during rainy days, toys for the kids and a spice cabinet in the kitchen. There is also wifi and satellite tv with all the channels you may need. You are secluded but an easy 10 min from town and a decent grocery store. Acadia National Park is a days trip about 1.5 hours away. The views from the deck are wonderful and everything is peaceful and quiet. All together we were pleasantly surprised.
This was our seventh (I think) rental of this property. It never disappoints. The location is ideal for our needs as seakayakers, with easy access to the water and the myriad kayaking possibilities of the Deer Isle archipelago. The addition this year of high speed wifi was a delightful bonus. We found that the completion of the AT&T cell phone tower in the past year also improved ourl iPhone signals significantly. We also enjoy the proximity of this rental to Acadia National Park, a pace that we have come to enjoy very much on days when we are not kayaking. We also recommend the Penobscott Narrows Bridge Observatory in Bucksport, that we visited for the first time this year.
Overall, we recommend this rental highly. It is clean, well equipped and in a place of great natural beauty.
My husband and I stayed at this property for the first time. We have stayed at other locations in Stonington. The property was clean and well maintained and was a lovely place to relax and enjoy the views. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. Being out of town a little provided peaceful nights. The house had everything we needed for our creature comforts and our home cooking. We hope to return again.
We are multiple repeat renters at this property, having found it to be perfect for our needs. As avid sea kayakers, the easy launching directly from the property and easy access to the gorgeous small islands off Deer Isle is unbeatable. The description of the property, location and amenities is accurate. There are a multitude of things to do on Deer Isle itself and in the nearby communities on the mainland. Even though this year we had less that wonderful weather, it still was a joy just to be in this beautiful and magical place. We would not hesitate to recommend this property to anyone seeking a special place to vacation. It is a very good value.
