Keywords: The history of the Folly Barrack House began at the turn of the last century with WWI. The army installed hundred of metal 'barracks' in North Charleston near the Naval Yard to house troops headed for Europe. At the end of the war, the 'barracks' were given away to anyone who would dis-assemble them and haul them away. In the mid 1920's, two 'barracks' were brought to Folly, re-assembled, a room placed between them, a front porch added across the front and a back porch also. This formed the beginnings of the Folly Barrack House. Our family has vacationed here since 1950 and wants to share the experience with others. First floor efficiency was added in the 70's which is rented yearly. Complete renovation Spring 2012. A two minute walk to the beach, and just minutes from all the charms and attractions of historic Charleston. Only 11 blocks from all Folly's shops and restaurants. Ocean view from sun room/den.

About Rodney Smith
I am the manager of a historic hotel in downtown Charleston. I know what is needed to have a comfortable stay and have tried to incorporate it into the renovations on our family beach house. I have 3 kids and we love the beach. We go crabbing, fishing, and boating. I have enjoyed this house since I was born and would love to pass along that experience with others
Rodney Smith purchased this House in 1930
Why Rodney Smith chose Folly Beach
I did not choose it, it chose me! I could not have done a better job if I had tried.
What makes this House unique
You will be staying in a piece of Folly history. You will notice that the kitchen ceiling is the original army hut ceiling from 1920. A fully equipped modern kitchen if your in the mood for cooking and great food just 11 blocks away if you are not. If you tire of the sand and still crave the water, James Island county park is just 15 minutes away and has a great water park called the Splash Zone. Historic Charleston is also just 15 minutes away.

Great Beach Getaway
My husband and I booked the Folly Barrack House last minute, the owners were very accommodating and the check in and out process was a breeze. The house has a large patio that is great for relaxing! It is right next to a beach access, which they were remodeling during our stay, but I'm sure it will be open soon. We didn't realize there is a couple who lives in the ground floor unit, but honestly we barely even noticed them, there were no disruptions at all. We loved that it was far away enough from the main strip but not a long drive when leaving Folly! Also, the master bedroom and bath remodels were great!
Perfect location owner of home is very nice and easy to deal with
4th of July Stay
so close to the beach! a wonderful little home for a getaway!
Great place to stay and very family friendly!
We had a wonderful stay at this home. The location is fantastic as you are truly steps away from the public beach access. Some perks of the place include plenty of seating, very comfortable king size bed and very nice upgraded bathrooms. The kitchen is well stocked and you have plenty of room for storing your stuff. The only reason I didn't give it a five star is because the bunk beds were quite squeaky and made a lot of noise every time my children moved to the point where they ended up sleeping in our room with us instead of in there. The master bathroom door could use a little grease as well, it was just very loud when we would open/close in the middle of the night. Rodney was great to work with and I would definitely recommend this place and come back myself one day.
Great spot for a quick family getaway
Space was perfect for a handful of days relaxing with the fam. Spacious, clean and much closer to the beach than expected. Besides the less than ideal weather the latter couple of days, we had a great time and the house to give a lot of credit to.
The reviews do really say it all. Great location, Great beach , very homey town, with warm and friendly people. This house is set up for a family of five or six, as two get bunkbeds.
This is a shore house in every aspect, with a very nice owner.
I highly recommend it for a true sea shore experience.
